The paper begins with a brief history of the short cloak prior to the 16th century. It continues with an overview of short cloaks by selected geographic region, comparing visual characteristics from period art and period tailor’s patterns, for both women and men. This paper does not contain information about ecclesiastical cloaks or other cloak-like vestments worn by priests, nuns, and other members of religious orders during this time period. The sleeves are unseen, but are probably either gathered into a small cuff or simply hemmed. Blackwork is not yet seen at the edges of men's shirts. Breeches Breeches of this decade continued to be the joined hose and codpiece of the fifteenth century. Doublets and jerkins Both doublets and jerkins are worn at this time. The doublet usually had a narrow standing collar, no more than 1" high, whereas the jerkin had a low, round neckline. Both had long skirts, extending to the knees, and both were simplify trimmed. Sleeves Sleeves are often difficult to see under the overgown, but appear to be of two common styles: either narrow but loose sleeves, or narrow to just above the elbow and full to the shoulder, possibly stuffed or padded to maintain a full shape. Sleeves usually matched the doublet or jerkin and were probably sewn into it. Over garments Finally, overgowns are seen in most portraits. These gowns fall either to mid-calf or to the ankles. They most often have very full, long sleeves, but occasionally, the sleeves are only elbow-length or are turned back over the elbows. The collar is turned back around the neck to reveal a different colored lining, which was sometimes fur.

Looking at portraits of elites and urban professionals from 1509 to 1670, I argue that fur dress played a fundamentally important role in actively remaking the image of middle- class and noble subjects. While demonstrating that fur was important to establishing male authority in court culture, my project shows that, by the late sixteenth century, the iconographic status and fashionability of fur garments were changing, rendering furs less central to elite displays of magnificence and more apt to bourgeois demonstrations of virtue and gravitas. This project explores the changing meanings of fur dress as it moved over the bodies of different social groups, male and female, European and non-European. My project deploys methods from several disciplines to discuss how fur’s shifting status was related to emerging technologies in art and fashion, new concepts of luxury, and contemporary knowledge in medicine and health.

Although I had never heard of the author, Douglas McClure Anderson, the three-part poem and the accompanying images were too interesting to pass up, so I purchased it and took it home to ponder its significance. [2] The piece is titled “The Pilgrimage of Grace, Retrospect from the Plaza at Santa Fe, New Mexico, 1938.” The first part of the poem reads: This is the way the wagons came From Cumberland and Burlingame, From Broken Butte and Genesee, And Kingdom City, Tennessee. This was the way the trail was won: With carpetbag and buffalo gun, 14 The Contexts of Religion and Violence With King James Bible and blacksnake quirt, And buckskin jerkin and crinoline skirt. This was the way a people came To the pueblo of St. Francis’ name In the valley of the Rio Grande, Seeking a second Promised Land. This was the trail of destiny To those whom the Lord gave liberty. Although these lines hardly represent the highest achievement in American verse, the simple poetic style actually distills in a concentrated manner a common and rather complex American ideology of conquest.
