  • Conversation on Andrei Rublev- Commentary of His Life and Work
Conversation on Andrei Rublev- Commentary of His Life and Work It is a wonder to understand the life of Andrei Rublev. The film, Andrei Rublev, by Andrei Tarkovsky is a remarkable and contemplative experience into the spiritual struggles and work of Andrei Rublev. Rublev's canonization was mostly attributed to the radiance of the Holy Spirit bringing forth the icon of The Trinity, the famous Rublev Trinity, through the work of his hands. Rublev's life mentors iconographers today...and into the future. As you watch the film, the purpose of this essay is to connect your experience in icon class as a framework towards a deeper knowledge of Orthodoxy and its traditions. Christianity is a liturgical religion. Christian dogma has been handed down to us in both word and image. Dogma consists of both the intellectual system as a collection data found in texts, and that which is given to us in the experience of our faith in the life of the Church...that being a field of vision wherein all things on earth are seen in their relation to things in heaven, first and foremost through liturgical celebration. The saints our those true friends of Christ who have struggled against the passions and acquired the Holy Spirit. The saints have imitated Christ who died for them by dying for Him through their life of self sacrifice, cutting off their own will and shedding their blood. Having partaken of Christ's suffering and death, the saints receive a share in His Resurrection and Glory, becoming co-heirs with Christ.

A Strange Proclamation 1 Corinthians 11:23-26 A Sermon preached in Duke University Chapel on April 21, 2011, by the Rev. Bruce Puckett The table is set. The meal is ready. Everyone gathers around and has a seat. What happens next is one of the most intimate moments of the evening meal at the Puckett house. Each person extends his or her hands to take hold of the hand of another. In this moment, the work and worries of each person’s day connect. Some hands are cold, and weak, and clammy; some are warm, and strong, and rough. Each hand carries with it the memories, stresses, and joys of the day. Each hand also brings a familiarity, a history, a story marked in the hand’s grooves, and prints, and scars. The stories represented by each person’s hands are deeply intertwined with those sitting around the table. Extending the hand is a kind of peace offering, an act of reconciliation, a chance to restore relationships damaged since our last meal together. We do not begin until everyone is present. With our hands joined, someone gives thanks for the meal about to be shared. This scene has taken place countless times around innumerable tables in our family. The practice of offering our hands as we turn to God in thanksgiving has shaped and continues to shape our family’s life together. This hand holding practice points toward something greater than our family meal. In the popular film based on the life of Baltimore Ravens offensive lineman Michael Oher, a wealthy family in Memphis takes in and eventually adopts a poverty stricken young man.

As early as the beginning of this century Russia's last czar, Nikolai Romanov, attempted to nationalize this new and, in his view, threatening medium: "I have always insisted that these cinema-booths are dangerous institutions. Any number of bandits could commit God knows what crimes there, yet they say the people go in droves to watch all kinds of rubbish; I don't know what to do about these places." [1] The plan for a government monopoly over cinema, which would ensure control of production and consumption and thereby protect the Russian people from moral ruin, was passed along to the Duma not long before the February revolution of 1917.

The olH y Fool in Late Tarkovsky Abstract This article analyzes the Russian cultural and religious phenomenon of holy foolishness (iurodstvo) in director Andrei Tarkovsky’s last two films, Nostalghia and Sacrifice. While traits of the holy fool appear in various characters throughout the director’s oeuvre, a marked change occurs in the films made outside the Soviet Union. Coincident with the films’ increasing disregard for spatiotemporal consistency and sharper eschatological focus, the character of the fool now appears to veer off into genuine insanity, albeit with a seemingly greater sensitivity to a visionary or virtual world of the spirit and explicit messianic task. Keywords Andrei Tarkovsky, Sacrifice, Nostalghia, Holy Foolishness Author Notes Robert Efird is Assistant Professor of Russian at Virginia Tech. He holds a PhD in Slavic from the University of Virginia and is the author of a number of articles dealing with Russian and Soviet cinema. • A Historical Analysis of the Films of Andrei Tarkovsky in Relation to the Post-Thaw Soviet Moment
A Historical Analysis of the Films of Andrei Tarkovsky in Relation to the Post-Thaw Soviet Moment Gus Helbock Haverford College Class of 2017 History Thesis Professor Linda Gerstein Professor James Krippner April 21, 2017 Helbock i Acknowledgements First, I would like to thank the professors at Haverford College who guided me through my educational experience, especially in the History Department. Specifically, I am grateful for the help that Professor Linda Gerstein and Professor James Krippner provided as my first reader/advisor and second reader, respectively. The advice they gave me and the historical insight they provided were integral in the completion of this thesis. I would also like to thank my family and friends who have given me love and support throughout the entirety of the thesis process. Helbock ii Abstract During the latter half of the twentieth century, Andrei Tarkovsky received arguably more critical admiration for his films than any Soviet director. During his filmmaking career, the Soviet Union experienced a tumultuous socio-cultural, as well as political, moment. After the death of Stalin, the Khrushchev Thaw of the late 1950s and early 1960s allowed for significantly more freedom of expression. It was at this time that Tarkovsky’s career began. However, through the 1960s and 1970s, a reactionary period in Soviet politics led to a return of stringent censorship, making Tarkovsky’s filmmaking process difficult. In the early 1980s, Tarkovsky emigrated to Western Europe, where he completed his final two films before his death in 1986. Due to his contentious relationship with the Soviet state, this thesis will attempt to analyze Tarkovsky and assess his relationship to the Russian intelligentsia and the dissident movements of the late twentieth century, as well as his relationship with spirituality and religion.

Reimer The spirituality of Andrei Rublev’s Icon of the Holy Trinity J. Reimer THE SPIRITUALITY OF ANDREI RUBLEV’S ICON OF THE HOLY TRINITY ABSTRACT This article focuses on the work of Rublev who is considered to be the greatest medieval Russian Orthodox painter of icons and frescoes and whose work has influenced gene rations of Russian artists, theologians, writers and philosophers. It examines Rublev’s spirituality, both historically and theologically, with specific attention to the Icon of the Holy Trinity which is considered to be his most important work. 1. THE MAN AND HIS WORK Andrei Rublev1 is considered to be the greatest of all Russian Orthodox me dieval painters of icons and frescoes. He was born in either 1360 or 1370. His place of birth is unknown. In fact, little is known about his life. Orthodox histo rians believe he was a monk of the monastery founded by the famous monastic father Sergii Radonezhski,2 who died in 1392 and who was succeeded by Nikon of Radonezh. It is believed that Nikon was Andrei Rublev’s spiritual father.3 Rublev´s name was first mentioned in 1405 as one of three artists who de corated the Cathedral of the Annunciation in Moscow’s Kremlin. The other two masters were Theophanes the Greek and Prochor of Gorodets. Both are well known in Russian religious history.4 Rublev is mentioned last on the list, which is an indication of his relative youth and, probably, his monastic status. Ac cording to Russian chronicles, Rublev also painted icons and frescoes in the 1 Also: Andrei Rublev, Andrey Roublyov.

  • The Qur"Anic Sarah As Prototype of Mary 193
the qur"anic sarah as prototype of mary 193 THE QUR"ANIC SARAH AS PROTOTYPE OF MARY GABRIEL SAID REYNOLDS In the autumn of 2000 a Greek Orthodox friend of mine in Bei- rut, Lebanon, showed me an image of his favorite icon: a fifteenth century Russian depiction of the visitation, described in Genesis 18, of three men to Abraham and Sarah.1 The beauty of the icon, he explained, is that the artist used this scene to represent the Holy Trinity. The angel to the right, wearing a sky blue garment, is the Holy Spirit. The angel in the middle, in an earth-toned garment, is the Son, and the angel to the left, wearing a garment the color of which changes with the light, is the Father. This Trinitarian interpretation of Genesis 18 seems to be en- couraged by the very opening of the biblical account: ‘Yahweh appeared to him at the Oak of Mamre while he was sitting by the entrance of the tent during the hottest part of the day. He looked up, and there he saw three men standing near him’ (Gen 18.1-2, New Jerusalem Bible). Accordingly, this interpretation is an ancient one. Saint Augustine (City of God, 29) defends it with the observation that while three men are said to visit Abraham and Sarah, the voice that speaks from their midst in verse 13 is that of the Lord.2 The resonance of this mysterious narrative can even be heard in Luke’s Gospel, in the famous depiction of Christ on the road to Emmaus (ch.
