Gangubai Hangal's primary guru in music was Sawai Gandharva. She has also acknowledged the inspiration and influence of her mother Ambabai and Zohrabai Agrewali on her musical development. On her Padma Bhushan award: Gangubai: It is normally announced to the D.C. (District Collector) here. Then they come to ask to check who the person is, whether they want to receive the award or not. "You have got it, do you want to accept it?" My uncle was sitting outside, I wasn't there. "What is it? If it is Padma Bhushan she will take it," he said. "If you come tomorrow she will be back." I came back. He said, "Look, you have got the Padma Bhushan." They came and took my signature from the Tehsildar's office. After they took it, I thought, 'These are announced on January 26th, maybe on the 25th night. I must listen to the radio before I sleep. Both of us must sit together before the radio, listen to the announcement and then sleep'. We sat for a long time. Nothing was announced. So I said, "Look, they asked me for my signature just like that. It's not there. Nothing has come." It did not occur to me that nobody's name was announced.

Though in the changing times there were several talented women who were making new identities as concert singers. The two ladies to make this major transition were Alladiya Khan‟s students Mogubai Kurdikar and Kesar Bai Kelkar who marked a shift from chamber singing and Marathi stage drama to concert stage of classical Hindustani music. Their success attributed enormously towards the phenomenal fame of their guru, Ustad Alladiya Khan whose extraordinary style gained prominence and reigned the music world in north India years after him. It came to be known as the Jaipur Atrauli Gayaki which made considerable impact particularly in Maharashtra. This article is a life sketch of the musical journey of Mogu Bai Kurdikar, her undeterred resolve ensuing her deep commitment through the many social struggles. The old phonograph records of Mogubai Kurdikar in Raags Sohni, Basanti Kedar,Yaman, Swani Kalyan exquisitely demonstrate the gayaki of Jaipur Atrauli The listener is awestruck by the concluding taan which traverses four avartanas in rupak taal in the Raag Nayaki Kanada, without a break for breath.

The Evolution of Community - Devdasis of Goa by Mario Cabral e Sa Some of the devdasis of Goa managed to use their traditionally inherited skill as musicians to build illustrious careers. More significantly, the community of former devdasis has not been totally decimated - a portion exists as an identifiable and organised community, many of its members, men and women, being high achievers in various fields. How this transformation took place needs to be studied in depth. This article provides a few glimpses of their past and present. Gaan Saraswatee Shreematee Kishori Amonkar (April 10, 1932 - April 3, 2017) World famous Sitar player Bhaaratratna Pandit Ravishankar ji said this about Shreematee Kishoree Amonkar: “Kishoree’s singing originates from her throat as well as from her soul”. Only one true artist can praise another true artist this way. Indeed Kishori ji was fortunate that she was born in a renowned artist’s home, she received music training from her mother Shreematee Mogubai Kurdikar, and she was considered a leading disciple of Ustaad Alladiyaa Khan from Jaypur gharaanaa. However, she also created her own unique style and became an extremely popular singer of her generation. That is how she received heart felt praise from a top artists that she “Sings from her soul”. Gaan Sarasvati Kishori ji’s concerts were always very entertaining and successful due to the rigorous systematic training she received from her capable mother and teacher, Shreematee Mogubai Kurdikar. In her earlier days, Kishori ji started her career by singing a song in a movie called ‘Geet gaayaa pattharon me’. The song was very sweet because of her divine voice and became very popular. But her mother and teacher strictly removed her from movie business to bring her focus back to classical music. Mother knew the true potential of her genius daughter. She knew Kishoriji will create her own unique place and become immensely popular in whatever music form she chooses.

  • The Phonograph in India
The Phonograph in India G. N. Joshi The Beginnings The history of the phonograph in India dates back to the beginning of the century. Though gramophones began to be exported to India since 1 898, the idea of commercially exploiting the phonograph on a large scale in the east was mooted in 1 900 and Messrs. The Mutoscope Biograph Co. of India was given the agency of selling horn-gramophones and records of European music imported from America. In 1 898, Mr. W. B. Owen had established in England the parent company of the Gramophone Co. Ltd. He was sent to England by the American inventor of disc recording, Mr. Emile Berliner, to sell, if possible, his European rights for the disc records which he had patented in the U.S.A. Since Mr. Owen did not succeed in selling Mr. Berliner's rights outright, the two formed The Gramophone Co. Ltd. in England. Mr. Berliner erected a record pressing factory at Hanover in the U.S.A . for supplying records and machines to the newly-formed company in England . At this point a· mechanic named Johnson invented a spring-wound motor for the phonograph machine.
