PROFILE Born in the family of Music lovers, Saniya's talent was discovered by her parents at the tender age of 3, when she started playing songs on harmonium by herself. As an inborn Artist, since childhood, she had good understanding towards Swar and Laya. Her father is a violin player, mother is a good connoisseur of Music and brother, Sameep Kulkarni is disciple of Sitar Maestro Ustad Shahid Parvez. Education is also given utmost importance in her family and all family members are Merit rank holders. Saniya was fortunate to receive blessings from Ganasaraswati Kishoritai Amonkar at the age of 6 and she started learning classical music from Smt. Lilatai Gharpure (senior disciple of Smt. Hirabai Badodekar). Saniya's first debut was her performance in front of legendary Pt.Jitendra Abhisheki at the age of 12 and that time she created long lasting impression on the audience. Saniya had a privilege to learn under able guidance of renowned senior vocalist Dr.Ashwini Bhide- Deshpande of Jaipur-Atrauli Gharana. She was trained under Ashwiniji with a comprehensive gharana talim for 12 years and frequent Pune-Mumbai travels Saniya is a “Sangeet Visharad” with distinction and a gold medalist in M.COM. Further she also completed the intricate C.S. (Company Secretary) Course. Her hard work, perseverance, and love for music contributed to prove herself on both musical as well as academic fronts. Besides Saniya has been showered with blessings and appreciation by musicologists, music critics and stalwarts of Hindustani Classical Music like Pt. Bhimsen Joshi, Bharatratna LATA MANGESHKAR, Late Pt. Smt Hirabai Badodekar, Pandit Jasraj, Ustad Ali Akbar Khan, Ustad Sayeeduddin Dagar, Pt. Smt. Gangubai Hangal, Pt. Smt. Prabha Atre, Late Pt. Jitendra Abhisheki, Begum Parveen Sultana, Smt.Malini Rajurkar, Pt.Ajay Chakraborty, Pt.Vishwamohan Bhat and many others Approach towards Music Dr. Ashwini Bhide taught Saniya an aesthetic insight and intellectual vision regarding music. Being a doctorate in biochemistry herself, she also insisted Saniya to pursue higher academics and as a result, Saniya could progress on her academic path accomplishing M.COM. and C.S. (Company Secretary) titles. With 5-6 hours of rigorous riyaj daily, Saniya proved herself as a young torchbearer of classical music in spite of no musical inheritance and backing. Saniya was also fortunate to receive special guidance from Ashwinij's guru Smt. Manik Bhide (a senior disciple of Smt. Kishori Amonkar and Ganatapasvini Mogubai Kurdikar) and from Mr.Vasantrao Rajurkar on a complex form of music called Tappa. According to Saniya, Indian classical music is an ocean of knowledge! Exploring every knowledge drop is as good as a little step taken towards peace of soul. After a meticulous self study of more than two decades, the journey still persists, and we realize how little we know about music!! The pleasure and satisfaction lie in the journey itself. Saniya’s academic excellence empowers her with a vision to analyze musical principles and relating them logically in her riyaz and concerts. Presently she is taking guidance from senior Musicologist Dr. Arwind Thatte and studying various musical aspects such as more than 22 shrutis exist in Indian classical music, for instance. About Gayaki In her gayaki, Saniya explores a Raag with systematic development structure, innovation and thoughtfulness. Few remarkable features of her gayaki are emotive content and pronunciation, brilliant phrasing, layakari, variety of taan patterns, ease and grace in all of the three octaves. She can fabricate a Raag into an aesthetically pleasing experience. She has an affiliation to present rare forms in a concert such as Sargamgeet, Baamayna, Thhatmala, Khayalnuma, Natvari Tarana, Trivat etc. Her singing is a rare combination of softness as well as aggressiveness. Articulating any music form from different points of view, with many orientations in a thematic harmony with appealable presentation with interplay of Swar and Laya is a specialty of her gayaki. Saniya as a versatile singer and gained mastery over different genre of music, Khayal, Thumri, Dadra, Gazal, Natya-Sangeet, Bhavgeet, Tappa, Tarana, Bhajan, Abhang, Rajasthani, Gujrati and Punjabi bhajans. Saniya is giving valuable and informative guidance through her Institute ‘Prerana’ to students of music by way of teaching, lecture demonstrations, music workshops etc. About Gharana The Jaipur-Atrauli gharana was founded by Ustad Alladiya Khan in the late 19th century. In the Jaipur gayaki, notes are applied in an oblique manner with filigree involving immediately neighboring notes. Instead of the flat taan, gamak (taan sung with double notes with a delicate force behind each of the component double-notes of the taan) makes the taan spiral into seemingly never-ending cycles. Meend in aalap and gamak in taan are the hallmark of this gayaki. Not only are the notes sung in rhythm with the taal but progress between the matras (beats) is in fractions of quarters and one-eighths. Meticulous attention is given to the short and long vowels in the words of the bandish that are being pronounced, and the strict discipline of avoiding unnatural breaks in the words and in the meaning of the lyrics. Special attention is given to the aesthetics and laykaari in singing bol-alaaps and bol-taans.A highlight of Jaipur gayaki is the mastery over Jod Raags (mixed or hybrid Raags) like Raag Basanti Kedar, Raag Jait Kalyan, Raag Kafi Kanada, Raisa Kanada, Raag Basanti Kanada, Raag Savani Nat, Raag Savani Kalyan, Raag Bhoop Nat, Raag Nat Kamod, Raag Bihari, Raag Khat, Raag Khokar, Raag Sampoorna Malkauns, and many .Hence this Gayaki is called a thinking listener's or connoisseur's Gayaki.
