The Fossil Pollen Record of the Pandanaceae DAVID M. JARZEN Paleobiology Division National Museum of Natural Sciences National Museums of Canada Ottawa, Canada Abstract The fossil record of pollen comparable to the family Pandanaceae and sometimes directly comparable with the extant genus Pandanus extends back to the latest Upper Cretaceous. The family which once had a wide geographic distribution on all continents except Australia, has, since the mid-Tertiary, become restricted to the Old World tropics and subtropics. Introduction The monocotyledon genus Pandanus Rumph. ex L. comprises about 600 species of trees, shrubs and less frequently subshrubs. Several, such as P. epiphyticus Martelli and P. altico/a Holt. and St. John from Malaya and Borneo are truly epiphytic though facultatively so, also occurring on boulders of limestone or sand stone (Stone, 1978). The tree habit is the most common, and such pandans form a conspicuous part of the vegetation of many tropical shorelines. The pandans (or screw-pines) are distributed throughout the palaeotropics, with species occurring on nearly all tropical and marginally subtropical islands of the Pacific, the northern tropical regions of Australia, tropical Southeast Asia, Indonesia, the Philippines, southern India and islands of the Indian Ocean, the Malagasy Republic and East and West Africa (Stone, 1976). The genus does not occur naturally in the neotropics. Map 1 illustrates the overall distribution of the genus, as well as the known fossil pollen reports of Pandanaceae. The pandans are dioecious, with the staminate plants, particularly of the forest species, being less frequently collected than the pistillate plants, due to the brief, ephemeral staminate anthesis. -

The New Zealand Rain Forest: A Comparison with Tropical Rain Forest! J. W. DAWSON2 and B. V. SNEDDON2 ABSTRACT: The structure of and growth forms and habits exhibited by the New Zealand rain forest are described and compared with those of lowland tropical rain forest. Theories relating to the frequent regeneration failure of the forest dominants are outlined. The floristic affinities of the forest type are discussed and it is suggested that two main elements can be recognized-lowland tropical and montane tropical. It is concluded that the New Zealand rain forest is comparable to lowland tropical rain forest in structure and in range of special growth forms and habits. It chiefly differs in its lower stature, fewer species, and smaller leaves. The floristic similarity between the present forest and forest floras of the Tertiary in New Zealand suggest that the former may be a floristically reduced derivative of the latter. HEARN Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, University of Arizona, Tucson, Arizona 85721, USA ([email protected]) ABSTRACT To understand evolutionary patterns and processes that account for anatomical diversity in relation to ecology and life form diversity, anatomy of storage roots and stems of the genus Adenia (Passifloraceae) were analyzed using an explicit phylogenetic context. Over 65,000 measurements are reported for 47 quantitative and qualitative traits from 58 species in the genus. Vestiges of lianous ancestry were apparent throughout the group, as treelets and lianous taxa alike share relatively short, often wide, vessel elements with simple, transverse perforation plates, and alternate lateral wall pitting; fibriform vessel elements, tracheids associated with vessels, and libriform fibers as additional tracheary elements; and well-developed axial parenchyma. Multiple cambial variants were observed, including anomalous parenchyma proliferation, anomalous vascular strands, successive cambia, and a novel type of intraxylary phloem. -

This study reviewed medicinal uses, phytochemistry and pharmacological properties of S. eriopus. Relevant information on the uses, phytochemistry and pharmacological properties of S. eriopus was collected from electronic scientific databases such as ScienceDirect, SciFinder, PubMed, Google Scholar, Medline, and SCOPUS. Pre-electronic literature search of conference papers, scientific articles, books, book chapters, dissertations and theses was carried out at the University library. Literature search revealed that S. eriopus is used as a protective charm against enemies, evil spirits, lightning, and bring good fortune or luck. The caudices, leaves, roots, seeds, stems and tubers of S. eriopus are used as emetics and purgatives, and as herbal medicine for body pains, congestion, headaches, high blood pressure and ethnoveterinary medicine. Phytochemical compounds identified from the species include alkaloids, amino acids, biflavones, fatty acids, glycosides, polyphenols, saponins and tannins. Mahendra* University of Mysore, Department of Studies in Botany, Manasagangotri, Mysore-570006, Karnataka, India *Corresponding Author: [email protected] [Accepted: 12 January 2017] Abstract: The work is undertaken to evaluate the preliminary phytochemicals, antibacterial and antioxidants activity of Cochlospermum religiosum leaf extracts with three solvents via chloroform, ethyl acetate and methanol based on polarity index. The antibacterial activity was assessed against five bacterial pathogens like Escherichia coli, Bacillus subtilis, Bacillus cereus, Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa by well diffusion assay. Among the tested pathogens, the maximum zone of inhibition was observed against E. coli (26 mm) followed by P. aeruginosa (23 mm) in ethyl acetate extracts compare to other solvent extracts. Phytochemical analysis also revealed the presence of various pharmaceutically active secondary metabolites like alkaloids, phenolic, flavonoids, saponins, carbohydrates, proteins, glycosides, sterols, etc. Antioxidant activity was determined by DPPH scavenging, total phenolic and phospho- molybdenum method. In DPPH assay, ethyl acetate extract was found to be the most effective. Similarly, total phenols and phospho-molybdenum assay the methanol extracts was found to contained good sources of antioxidants. The outcomes of the present study specified the plant possess various potentially active secondary metabolites which help for the developing pharmaceuticals, especially antioxidant and antimicrobial drugs. Suman BISHOP MUSEUM, HONOLULU, HAWAII Abstract: This paper contains a systematic list of species, and the literature references, of the spiders occurring in the Hawaiian Islands. The species total 149 of which 17 are record ed here for the first time. This paper lists the records and literature of the spiders in the Hawaiian Islands. The islands included are Kure, Midway, Laysan, French Frigate Shoal, Kauai, Oahu, Molokai, Lanai, Maui and Hawaii. The only major work dealing with the spiders in the Hawaiian Is. was published 60 years ago in " Fauna Hawaiiensis " by Simon (1900 & 1904). All of the endemic spiders known today, except Pseudanapis aloha Forster, are described in that work which also in cludes a listing of several introduced species. The spider collection available to Simon re presented only a small part of the entire Hawaiian fauna. In all probability, the endemic species are only partly known. Since the appearance of Simon's work, there have been many new records and lists of introduced spiders. The known Hawaiian spider fauna now totals 149 species and 4 subspecies belonging to 21 families and 66 genera. Of this total, 82 species (5596) are believed to be endemic and belong to 10 families and 27 genera including 7 endemic genera. The introduced spe cies total 65 (44^). Two unidentified species placed in indigenous genera comprise the remaining \%. Seventeen species are recorded here for the first time. In the catalog section of this paper, families, genera and species are listed alphabetical ly for convenience. -

Common name: Hernandia; Sea Hearse Stem White granular and brown fibrous stripes usually visible in the outer blaze. Bark pale brown. Leaves Petiole often pink where it joins the twig and also at its junction with the leaf blade. Leaf blades about 7-33 x 6-29 cm. Petioles about 5-17 cm long. Flowers Perianth outer surface puberulous. Tepals about 5 mm long. Anther valves opening like doors, i.e. on vertical hinges. Ovary in the female flower enclosed in a truncate involucre. Fruits +/- globular, about 25 x 20 mm, somewhat inflated and vertically ribbed, constricted below the apex, endocarp or testa quite hard and tough. Seedlings Usually 2-4 cataphylls produced before the first true leaves. First pair of true leaves ovate to cordate. At the tenth leaf stage: leaves peltate, apex acuminate, base rounded, upper surface glabrous, underside puberulous; petiole puberulous at least towards the apex, about as long as the leaf blade. Seed germination time 23 to 64 days. Distribution and Ecology Fruit, three views and longitudinal Occurs in NT, CYP and NEQ with an altitudinal range of a few metres above sea level. Its leaves are deciduous and usually appear after the plant has flowered. This endemic species to Madagascar is collected from the wild and has become rare. However, it is not yet protected by the CITES Convention.
