BELLE VUE BELLE VUE µ$&(6¶ 20 BELLE VUE 1982 Season Review Belle Vue comes first in the alphabetical list of tracks in this yearbook. It is also the first British speedway team that comes to mind for many of the great British public. And in 1982 the Belle Vue Aces came first in the British League too, 10 years afterthey last won this particular trophy and seven years since this famous Manchester club won any national ƐŝůǀĞƌǁĂƌĞ͘^ƵĐŚĂƌĞƐƵůƚĚŝĚŶ͛ƚůŽŽŬ on the cards early on as the Aces had a modest League Cup campaign, losing at home to Cradley Heath and managing just one win in their six away meetings on their way to third place in the Northern Section. From the start of May things improved. On the opening day of the month Belle Vue trounced Swindon 56-21. A couple of days later they lŽƐƚŶĂƌƌŽǁůLJĂƚ<ŝŶŐ͛Ɛ>LJŶŶďƵƚŚĂĚƚŚĞƌĞƐƵůƚŽǀĞƌƚƵƌŶĞĚĂƐŽůŝŶŽŽŬǁĂƐĚĞĞŵĞĚƚŽďĞŝŶĞůŝŐŝďůĞĨŽƌƚŚĞŚŽŵĞƐŝĚĞ͘dŚĞLJalso won at ^ǁŝŶĚŽŶĂŶĚǁĞƌĞŽŶĂƌŽůů͘/ŶĨĂĐƚŝƚǁĂƐŶ͛ƚƵŶƚŝůƚŚĞĞŶĚŽĨ:ƵŶĞǁŚĞŶƚŚĞLJǁĞŶƚƚŽƌĂĚůĞLJ,ĞĂƚŚƚŚĂƚƚŚĞĐĞƐƚĂƐƚed defeat in a league match, at the 10th attempt. That loss prompted something of a wobble though as they immediately went down at Wimbledon and lost at Leicester and at home to Ipswich a couple of weeks later. They also lost heavily at Sheffield before July had finished, albeit after home and away victories over Eastbourne. At the end of July Belle Vue were in a three-way tie at the top of the league but, significantly, they had ůŽƐƚĨŝǀĞƚŝŵĞƐƚŽƌĂĚůĞLJ,ĞĂƚŚ͛ƐŽne defeat. That loss at Sheffield proved to be the turning point. After that the Aces had 11 league fixtures remaining, and they won every single one ŽĨƚŚĞŵ͘/ƚǁĂƐŶ͛ƚĂůǁĂLJƐĞĂƐLJ͕ůŝŬĞƚŚĞƚǁŽƉŽŝŶƚŚŽŵĞǁŝŶĂŐĂŝŶƐƚ^ŚĞĨĨŝĞůĚŽƌƚŚe one point victory at Halifax. -

Part 6: SIX AFRICAN TRACKS IN 1953/54 FOUR IN THE UNION – TWO IN RHODESIA IN spite of the wettest summer for a decade – there were many washouts – speedway increased in popularity in the Union. As weeks rolled by more and more cities clamoured for tracks, suitable venues being the only obstacle to a wild-fire spread of the sport. Supporters clubs, on British lines, grew apace and hero worship reached an all-time high. The knights of the cinder circuits were quite as well known in the Transvaal as the players of any of the other major spectator sports. In fact in the mid-1950‘s only inter-provincial and international rugby had a larger and more ardent following than speedway racing. Club rugby, soccer and cricket had been relegated to the ranks of the "also-rans“ where numbers are concerned. An event which was to have a profound effect on Transvaal racing was the arrival of restless, ambitious Trevor Redmond in September. He went to work with a will and carved a track out of the virgin veldt at Springs on the Far East Rand. Meetings went with a swing. Red-hot racing, unexpected novelty turns plus managerial drive brought the customers in and by mid-season Redmond had hit the jackpot. Bob Quick, once a star rider, staged a come-back, this time as a promoter, and his snappy little stadium at Randfontein proved highly popular on the West Rand. Rain – and how it came down on Friday nights – was the spoil-sport at Wembley, Johannesburg. *** Main domestic competition was the National League won by Springs Stars from Wembley Lions. -

Season 1965 Version 1.22 Notes – season files The full season files we have compiled have been collated from Speedway Publications, magazines, books and programmes. These files list the heat details of every (known) UK official meeting raced during that particular season and also attempt to correct the many errors that have been published in the Speedway press and various publications for that season. The points scorers in the official league and KO Cup fixtures should (in the vast majority of cases) correspond with the official averages published at the end of the season, together with any fixture(s) where the result was amended following an appeal to the SCB. We tried to remove as many errors as possible and of course some will remain. The Speedway Researcher Promoting Research into the History of Speedway and Dirt Track Racing Volume No. 4 . No. 3 December 2001 Edited by Graham Fraser and Jim Henry Subscribers : 200 We welcome articles on modern or post war venues and start this edition with an item about a hazy Midlands venue which flourished in the late 1940s and early 1950s. THE TRACK AMONGST THE TREES Part 1 : The First Two Seasons Philip Pike has penned an article about the post war Midlands venue, Tamworth and in this edition we cover the first two seasons 1947 and 1948. The article will be completed in the next edition. If you drive along the A5 through Fazeley towards Nuneaton, on the right hand side of the road you will see some houses set behind some trees. This is where the Tamworth speedway track was situated, close to Drayton Manor, which was at one time the home Sir Robert Peel who founded the police force. Set amongst the trees the Deer Park Stadium exuded a friendly ambience that was, at the time, missing from those tracks located in an urban setting. The track measured 352 yards and the team for the opening 1947 season were known as “The Hounds.” The race jacket (which was the subject of much debate in The Speedway Researcher) had a red greyhound in full flight on top of blue and white halves. The promoter was former rider Arthur “Westy” Westwood who appointed Australian Steve Langton as team captain. Langton had raced in Britain in the pre-war days turning out for Lea Bridge, Hackney Wick and Birmingham. -

Your Shout: Oxford and the Implications - Part Two Comments on the closure of Oxford and the future of the sport continue to pour in. Here's the latest batch we've receieved. "If you alienate your customers over petty things, it will cost you" By Keith Butler I was sorry to hear of Oxford’s demise, particularly mid-way through the season. With this starting off a debate on speedway’s future & failings, I thought I’d add my two-penneth. I've been a Speedway fan for over 40 years on and off & do not intend this as a knock on the sport, more food for thought. When my kids were younger, I could take them to watch Coventry relatively economically. As they got to 15 they suddenly became adults price wise. They were too old to be children & too young to get concessions as students. Hence our visits to Brandon as a family diminished. My youngest daughter has consequently lost all interest in Speedway. My eldest however has retained an interest, but as a student now can only afford occasional visits. So Point 1 - When you’ve captured the interest of youngsters, don’t price them out of attending too soon. In the 70’s attendances were considerably better than today. You could literally take a picnic with you, sit on chairs along the back straight and share your drink, food & humour with all around. Not too long ago I was stopped from taking a small bottle of water into a stadium and told all foodstuffs must be bought on the premises. -

Exeter promoters Colin Hill and Roger Jones stepped in and agreed a deal with Cheney that would see them run the team, while he retained control of the track and stadium. Jones, who had actually been sacked as Milton Keynes promoter by Cheney a few years earlier, would take control at Milton Keynes while Hill would concentrate on activities at Exeter. The Exeter promotion had a number of motives for getting involved. The Knights were actually their nearest rivals in the second division and they didn't want to become even more isolated, they also had unused rider assets that were of little value if they weren't employed and it's also fair to say they acted out of concern for the sport as a whole. Another lost track was the last thing that the sport needed - Wimbledon and Hackney had Peter Glanz just closed and Peterborough were only saved by the intervention of Peter Oakes and James Easter. At the beginning of 1992 the future of the Milton Keynes Knights was looking very bleak indeed. Milton Keynes was not actually the first choice They just had come through a traumatic 1991 venue for Jones and Hill. Their initial target had season which had seen them temporarily close been Mildenhall, where speedway had not been mid-season due to financial problems, only being staged the previous year. -

Part 26: IN RHODESIA AT the beginning of November of 1974 , the Springbok quartet of Arthur Bruins, Brian Stephens, Andy Long and Boet Strydom had been invited to compete in a couple of prestigeous meetings in Rhodesia. First stop was Salisbury, where the annual Coca Cola Championship attracted a handy attandance to the Glamis Stadium. The added attraction of having four South African riders in the field contributed to a marked rise in attendance figures, and although their efforts on the tight little Salisbury racestrip were not always completely successful, their competitive spirit kept them going strongly and added much to the overall entertainment. Peter Prinsloo was in immaculate form and won each of his three races reasonably easy, and deserved his standing ovation as he made a lap of honour following the presentation of the handsome trophy by an official of the sponsoring organisation. Mike Ferreira, who was perhaps unlucky to face Prinsloo twice during the evening, and Pip Harris were deserving winners of the minor placings. Of the South Africans, Arthur Bruins was unlucky to fall twice while well placed, and indeed Arthur won the only race in which he was able to finish ! Brian Stephens was also impressive, which indicated the steady improvement of the South African riders. There was a gap in the standard of the Rhodesian riders that season, with Roni Ferguson lost to the sport because of a badly broken leg, and John Bower having journeyed home to Britain in September to sign for Sunderland. Rhodesia’s hopes for the future now rested very much on the improvement of young riders such as Dennis Paulson and Trevor Bezely. -

Riders to Remember....Eric Boothroyd Eric Boothroyd Eric Boothroyd was Halifax’s favourite greengrocer and the man for whom the word avuncular could have been created. Like many others his career started on the makeshift tracks in post-war Germany as he rode in meetings for service personnel. Boothroyd served as a corporal dispatch rider in the Royal Signals and was stationed at Hanomag. He finished third in the army championship within months of his first appearances. On demob he returned to the UK and started his career for real, turning out for both Tamworth and Cradley Heath in the 1950 season. He put down roots at Birmingham the following season and enjoyed it so much he stayed for seven years. During his years as a Brummie he became a regular England international, even top scoring on the tour of South Africa in the winter of 1956-57. Individual success also followed as he qualified for his one and only World Final in 1956. Eric started well and scored five points in his first two races, including leading home Ronnie Moore. He could only muster two points from his remaining three rides and finished in a disappointing tenth position. Ove Fundin scored thirteen points under the Wembley lights to win his first World Title. A move closer to home followed in 1958 when he turned out for Bradford, then short spells with Leicester and Oxford followed. By the turn of the sixties the National League was toiling and a new Provinical League had been formed by Mike Parker and his associates.
