Extract from Hansard [ASSEMBLY — Wednesday, 14 October 2015] p7330a-7330a Ms Eleni Evangel; Mr John Day PERTH CITY LINK — YAGAN SQUARE 831. Ms E. EVANGEL to the Minister for Planning: I understand that plans for Yagan Square at Perth City Link are progressing well. Could the minister please provide the house with an update on this exciting city project? Ms M.M. Quirk interjected. The SPEAKER: Member for Girrawheen, I call you to order for the first time. Mr J.H.D. DAY replied: Yagan Square will be a very interesting, active and exciting destination within the Perth CBD as part of the Perth City Link project, of course. One particular aspect is a market hall to be contained within Yagan Square, and I am very pleased to advise today that an expression-of-interest request has been released by the Metropolitan Redevelopment Authority seeking potential business operators interested in opening food and beverage tenancies within Yagan Square. This will be situated within the arms of the Horseshoe Bridge, as part of what will be Perth City Link’s flagship public space. The central feature of Yagan Square, as I said, will be a large market hall that will have a focus on selling and promoting Western Australian produce. The public space will also include cafes, bars, restaurants, event and performance spaces, and landscaped areas for relaxation, children’s play and public art. The EOI request that has been put out calls for the leasing of 25 tenancies within the square, and they will include tenancies within the market hall, some within the plaza of Yagan Square and in the new public meeting place that will be created on the rooftop of the market hall and rail tunnel. There will be tenancies in Horseshoe lane, which will be a new laneway constructed between the Horseshoe Bridge and the market hall, together with pop-up and temporary tenancies. As I said, there will be 25 different tenancies available for small to larger retailers, and they will offer fantastic opportunities for people to establish new businesses in a very active and exciting part of the Perth CBD. A particular focus will be on showcasing Western Australian food and wine to both local residents and visitors. I think that this project will help to build on Western Australia’s reputation for great food and will no doubt boost culinary tourism and support growth in the Western Australian tourism industry. Coincidentally, Mr Speaker, the event that was held in the courtyard here last evening, put on by the Royal Agricultural Society with some of the outstanding food and beverage producers from Western Australia, has relevance to the sorts of offerings that will be provided within Yagan Square. A lead contractor will be appointed shortly for construction of Yagan Square itself, and the square is expected to be open to the public in the first half of 2017. The Perth City Link project as a whole is going very well. It has been under construction now for about four to five years. Of course, the underground rail section is completed; the busport will be finished by the middle of next year; Perth Arena, at the western end of Perth City Link, has proved to be very successful; and the office buildings within Kings Square are close to completion and fitting out and will be occupied in the early part of next year. The market hall with the food and beverage tenancies within Yagan Square really will be a food lover’s paradise and will be a very exciting part of Perth to be in from early 2017. [1] .
