    International POPs Elimination Project Fostering Active and Efficient Civil Society Participation in Preparation for Implementation of the Stockholm Convention Case study of Zero Waste Kovalam: A progressive waste management programme with a focus on the best available technology options and material substitution Thanal India April 2005 About the International POPs Elimination Project On May 1, 2004, the International POPs Elimination Network (IPEN http:// www.ipen.org) began a global NGO project called the International POPs Elimination Project (IPEP) in partnership with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP). The Global Environment Facility (GEF) provided core funding for the project. IPEP has three principal objectives: • Encourage and enable NGOs in 40 developing and transitional countries to engage in activities that provide concrete and immediate contributions to country efforts in preparing for the implementation of the Stockholm Convention; • Enhance the skills and knowledge of NGOs to help build their capacity as effective stakeholders in the Convention implementation process; • Help establish regional and national NGO coordination and capacity in all regions of the world in support of longer term efforts to achieve chemical safety. IPEP will support preparation of reports on country situation, hotspots, policy briefs, and regional activities. Three principal types of activities will be supported by IPEP: participation in the National Implementation Plan, training and awareness workshops, and public information and awareness campaigns. Four variables have been considered for evaluating the quality of life of the stakeholders of ecotourism sites, which is then funneled to the income-education spectrum for hypothesizing into the SLI framework. Zone-wise analysis of the community members working in tourism sector shows that the community members have benefited totally from tourism development in the region as they have got both employments as well as secured livelihood options. Most of the quality of life-indicators of the community in the eco-tourist centres show a promising position. The community perception does not show any negative impact on environment as well as on their local culture. The holy shrine dedicated to Lord Ayyappa is situated 914 metres above sea level amidst dense forests in the rugged terrains of the Western Ghats. Lord Ayyappa is looked upon as the guardian of mountains and there are several shrines dedicated to him all along the Western Ghats. The festivals here are the Mandala Pooja, Makara Vilakku (December/January) and Vishu Kani (April). The temple is also open for pooja on the first 5 days of every Malayalam month. The vehicles go only up to Pampa and the temple, which is situated 5 km away from Pampa, can be reached only by trekking. The District is bounded by Tirunelveli District on the North and the east. • The South Eastern boundary is flanked by Gulf of Mannar. On the South and the South West, the boundaries are the Indian Ocean and the Arabian Sea. On the West and North West it is bound by Kerala State. • The District lies between 8o 03' and 8o 35' N Latitude, 77o 15' and 77o 36' E Longitude and has an areal extent of 1684 sq.km. • There are 9 Blocks, 95 Villages and 1384 Habitations in the District. Physiography and Drainage: • The major river in the district is Kuzhithuraiar. • This river has got two major distributaries namely Kodayar and Paralayar. There are many tributaries for Kodayar River and among them are Chittar I and Chittar II rivers. • The origin of Kodayar River is Western Ghats and the river confluences with Arabian Sea near Thengaipattanam, at a distance of about 56 Km. west of Cape Comorian, the southernmost tip of India. • Valliar, another small river and its tributary Thoovalar, originates from Velimalai Hills, and confluences with Arabian Sea near Manavalakurichi. Pazhayar is another small river draining the district. Introduction The district Tawang in Arunachal Pradesh, India, is located in extreme western corner of the state between 27º25’ & 27º45’N and 91º42’ & 92º39’ E covering an area of 2,172 km2 and is bordered with Tibet (China) to North, Bhutan to south-west and west Kameng district towards east. The bryo-floristic information of the area was unknown till Vohra and Kar (1996) published an account of 82 species of mosses from Arunachal Pradesh, including 12 from Tawang. Rawat and Verma (2014) published an account of 23 species of liverworts from Tawang. Recently Ellis et al (2016a, 2016b) reported two mosses viz., Splachnum sphaericum Hedw. and Polytrichastrum alpinum (Hedw.) G.L. Sm. from Tawang. The present paper provides additional information of 30 more bryophyte taxa from Tawang district of Arunachal Pradesh, making a sum of 67 bryophytes known so far from the district.

Abstract Islam in Kanyakumari District has been enriched by Fakirs and saintly savants of Islam. Due to their selfless service, Islam has thrived in this part of the country. The spread and growth of Islam is conspicuous by the presence of 52 Jamaaths in this district. These Jamaaths speak of their antiquity and they contain a lot of information regarding their life style and culture. In Kanyakumari District there are 52 Jamaaths. Among them six Muslim Jamaaths are considered very large and prominent. They are, Thengapattanam Muslim Jamaath, Colachel Muslim Jamaath, Thiruvithancode Muslim Jamaath, Thuckalay Muslim Jamaath, Elankadai Muslim Jamaath at Kottar, Malik Dinar faithulmal Muslim Jamaath, Kottar, Thittuvilai Muslim Jamaath. Some other Jamaaths are steadily growing in strength, stature and popularity.
