Williams 1 “I’ve never been to a Symphony Orchestra concert before… What do I do?” When you arrive and find your seat, you will see the orchestra on stage. They will be tuning their instruments and warming up for the concert. When the concert is about to begin, the concertmaster will come on stage carrying his violin. You may applaud for him when he comes out on stage. Then, it is VERY important for you to be quiet. The orchestra is about to begin and must hear itself tune as a whole. As soon as the concertmaster has tuned the orchestra, the conductor will come onto the stage. You may clap for him. He will take a bow to the audience. This is his way of saying, “Thank you.” When the conductor has his arms in the air directing the orchestra, you should be listening to the music and watching the activity on the stage. When the orchestra stops playing, the conductor lowers his arms AND turns around, that means that piece is over. If you like it, you should clap to let the orchestra and conductor know! REMEMBER: When the orchestra is performing, the audience is quiet and listening closely. When the audience is applauding, the orchestra is quiet for you. That is their turn to be quiet. 2 Frequently Asked Questions Q: What is the admission fee? A: Free!
