Assistant Director, Malaria Institute of India, Delhi, India SYNOPSIS The author reviews the history of filarial infections in India and discusses factors affecting the filariae, their vectors, and the human reservoir of infection. A detailed description is given of techniques for determining the degree of infection, disease and endemicity of filariasis in a community, and aspects which require further study are indicated. Filarial infections have been recorded in India as early as the sixth century B.C. by the famous physician Susruta in Chapter XII of the Susruta Sanihita (quoted by Menon 48). The description of the signs and symptoms of this disease by Madhavakara (seventh century A.D.) in his treatise Madhava Nidhana (Chapter XXXIX), holds good even today. More recently, Clarke in 1709 called elephantiasis of the legs in Cochin, South India, "Malabar legs " (see Menon 49). Lewis 38 in India discovered microfilariae in the peripheral blood. Between 1929 and 1946 small-scale surveys have been carried out, first by Korke 35, 36 and later by Rao 63-65 under the Indian Council of Medical Research (Indian Research Fund Association), and others, at Saidapet, by workers at the King Institute, Guindy, Madras (King et al.33). The studies in the epidemiology of filariasis in Travancore by Iyengar (1938) have brought out many important points in regard to Wuchererian infections, especially W. malayi. The first description of MJ. malayi in India was made by Korke 35 in Balasore District, Orissa State; the credit for describing the adult worms of this infection is due to Rao & Maplestone.8 The discovery of the garden lizard Calotes versicolor with a natural filarial infection - Conispiculum guindiensis - (Pandit, Pandit & Iyer 53) in Guindy led to studies in experimental transmission which threw some interesting light on comparative development (Menon & Ramamurti ;49 Menon, Ramamurti & Sundarasiva Rao 50). -

Parasitic Contaminants in Food
SOUTHEAST ASIAN J TROP MED PUBLIC HEALTH PARASITIC CONTAMINANTS IN FOOD Malinee T Anantaphruti Department of Helminthology, Faculty of Tropical Medicine, Mahidol University, Bangkok, Thailand Abstract. There is a wide variety of food products that may be contaminated with one or more parasites and consequently enabling transmission to human beings. The prevalence of specific parasites in food supplies varies between countries and regions. Sources of food-borne products contaminated with parasites are pigs, cattle, fish, crabs, crayfish, snails, frogs, snakes and aquatic plants. One of the major factors influencing the prevalence of parasitic infections in the population is the habit, and traditional popularity of eating raw or inadequately cooked foods. The parasites that may be acquired by eating these foods are nematodes, trematodes, cestodes and protozoa. The major genera of parasites are Trichinella, Gnathostoma, Angiostrongylus, Anisakis, Paragonimus, Clonorchis, Opisthorchis, Fasciola, Fasciolopsis, Echinostoma, Taenia, Spirometra and Toxoplasma. These food-borne parasitic infections are public health problems worldwide. The contamination of food affects many including humans, livestock industry, agriculture, and food manufacturing and processing. Unsafe foods must be condemned and destroyed. Today there is increasing travel hence there is the risk of humans’ acquiring food-borne parasitic infections through eating native food often raw. Moreover, the consumption of imported livestock and foods, especially from endemic areas of food-borne parasitic zoonoses, can be the cause of infection. Awareness should be heightened wherever and whenever raw or inadequately cooked food are consumed. SHORB ^ AS EVERY SHEEPMAN KNOWS, internal para- sites are one of the greatest hazards in sheep production, and the problem of control is a difficult one. Here is a discussion of some 40 of these parasites, including life histories, symptoms of infestation, medicinal treat- ment, and preventive measures. WHILE SHEEP, like other farm animals, suffer from various infectious and noiiinfectious diseases, the most serious losses, especially in farm flocks, are due to internal parasites. These losses result not so much from deaths from gross parasitism, although fatalities are not infre- quent, as from loss of condition, unthriftiness, anemia, and other effects. Devastating and spectacular losses, such as were formerly caused among swine by hog cholera, among cattle by anthrax, and among horses by encephalomyelitis, seldom occur among sheep. Losses due to parasites are much less seni^ational, but they are con- stant, and especially in farai flocks they far exceed those due to bacterial diseases. They are difficult to evaluate, however, and do not as a rule receive the attention they deserve. The principal internal parasites of sheep and goats are round- worms, tapeworms, flukes, and protozoa. Their scientific and com- mon names and their locations in the host are given in table 1. Another internal parasite of sheep, the sheep nasal fly, the grubs of which develop in the nasal pasisages and head sinuses, is discussed at the end of the article. ^ G. A Case of Human Thelaziasis from Himachal Pradesh

They were identified as both male and female worms of Thelazia callipaeda. To the best of our knowledge, this is the second case report of human thelaziasis from India. A2. 1Department of Microbiology, Faculty of Science, University of Maiduguri 2 Department of Zoology, Faculty of Natural Sciences, University of Jos, Nigeria. * [email protected] ; +234 7032928308 Abstract: One thousand faecal samples of dogs were examined for eggs of parasites in two local government areas of Plateau state, namely, Jos North and Jos South Local Government Areas using the sugar floatation method .Of the 1000 faecal samples examined, 661 (66.10%) harboured eggs of six different helminth parasites. The overall prevalence rates for the eggs of different types were 118 (11.80%) Dipylidium caninum, 58 (5.80%) for Spirocerca lupi, 382 (38.20%) for Taxocara canis, 318 (31.80%) for Trichuris vulpis) 501 (50.10%) for Ancylostoma caninum and 129 (12.90%) for Taenia species. Out of the 521 (52.1%) male dogs examined, six different parasites were found and recorded. Also, of the 479 (47.9%) female dogs examined, six different parasites were also found and recorded. Out of the 1000 faecal samples examined, 339 (33.9%) did not show any parasite, 101 (10.10%) showed single infections with different parasites, mixed infections were common. A total of 666 (66.10%) harboured multiple infections (polyparasitism) caused by 2 - 6 different parasites. [Researcher. 2010;2(8):51-56]. (ISSN: 1553- 9865). However, human activities and politics (e.g., fragmentation of the environment, land use, recycling in urban settings) have consistently favoured the encroachment of urban areas upon wild environments, ultimately causing alteration of many ecosystems with changes in the composition of the wild fauna and destruction of boundaries between domestic and wild environments. Therefore, the exchange of parasites from wild to domestic carnivores and vice versa have enhanced the public health relevance of wild carnivores and their potential impact in the epidemiology of many zoonotic parasitic diseases. The risk of transmission of zoonotic nematodes from wild carnivores to humans via food, water and soil (e.g., genera Ancylostoma, Baylisascaris, Capillaria, Uncinaria, Strongyloides, Toxocara, Trichinella) or arthropod vectors (e.g., genera Dirofilaria spp., Onchocerca spp., Thelazia spp.) and the emergence, re-emergence or the decreasing trend of selected infections is herein discussed. In addition, the reasons for limited scientific information about some parasites of zoonotic concern have been examined. A correct compromise between conservation of wild carnivores and risk of introduction and spreading of parasites of public health concern is discussed in order to adequately manage the risk of zoonotic nematodes of wild carnivores in line with the ’One Health’ approach. The parasitosis is a life threatening disease and has been reported from Thailand, Japan, South of Taiwan (Kaoh-Siung), Korea, Iran, Egypt, Italy and Spain. Clinical symptoms are characterized by chronic diarrhea, abdominal pain, borborygmi, marked weight loss, protein and electrolyte loss and cachexia. Capillariasis may be fatal if treatment is not given early. We reported 7 cases living in rural areas of Taiwan. They had no history of travelling abroad. Two cases had the diet of raw freshwater fish before. Two cases received emergency laparotomy due to peritonitis and found of enteritis cystica profunda. According to the route of transmission, freshwater and brackish-water fish may act as the intermediate host of the parasite. The most simple and convenient method of diagnosing capillariasis is stool examination. Two cases were diagnosed by histology. Mebendazole or albendazole 200mg orally twice a day for 20-30 days as the treatment of choice. All the patients were cured, and relapses were not observed within 12 months.
