Tradicionalmente focalizado en el empleo de trazas fósiles de invertebrados, el modelo de icnofacies continentales se expandió sólo recientemente incluyendo a las huellas de tetrápodos. El objetivo de esta tesis es el de analizar el rol de las huellas de tetrápodos en la elaboración de modelos de icnofacies continentales así como en la reconstrucción de paleoambientes sedimentarios en ambientes de climas áridos-semiáridos. Para ello, se abordó la problemática desde una perspectiva integradora incorporando la información de los ambientes depositacionales, así como la proveniente del campo de la icnología de vertebrados y de invertebrados. Los distintos ejemplos particulares que constituyen la base empírica de este estudio representan una nueva contribución al conocimiento icnofaunístico de distintas unidades litoestratigráficas aflorantes en localidades argentinas (Formación Patquía, Paganzo, provincia de La Rioja; Formación Candeleros, área Villa El Chocón, provincia del Neuquén; Formación Anacleto, Sierra Barrosa, provincia del Neuquén; Formación Vinchina, Vinchina, provincia de la Rioja). La primera de las unidades estudiadas corresponde a la Formación Patquía (Pérmico inferior) en la provincia de la Rioja. Esta presenta una asociación de trazas fósiles presente en cuerpos de agua poco profundos de planicies de inundación caracterizada por trazas de locomoción, descanso y habitación asignados a Cruziana problematica, Rusophycus carbonarius y Palaeophycus tubularis. En los depósitos de mantos de arena de la misma formación se encuentran preservados trazas fósiles de tetrápodos asignados a Chelichnus duncani, trazas de habitación de invertebrados (Palaeophycus tubularis, Skolithos isp.) y locomoción de de artrópodos. Krapovickas, V. i El estudio de la Formación Candeleros (Cretácico Superior) incluye las localidades clásicas de Villa el Chocón y Balneario Villa el Chocón, así como una nueva localidad (Cañadón de las Campanas). La asociación icnológica está preservada en depósitos de interdunas húmedas y lagos de playa de bolsón y contiene trazas de invertebrados (Arenicolites isp., Arenicolites carbonarius, Diplocraterion parallelum, Palaeophycus tubularis, Scoyenia gracilis, Skolithos verticalis, Taenidium barretti), huellas de dinosaurios terópodos (Irenesauripus isp.) y saurópodos (cf. Brontopodus birdi). La asociación de trazas fósiles de la Formación Anacleto (Cretácico Superior) incluye huellas de terópodos avianos y no avianos (Ignotornis mcconnelli, Barrosopus slobodai, huella tridáctila mediana) y trazas de invertebrados (Arenicolites tipo1, tipo2, Palaeophycus tubularis, cf. Digitichnus laminatus, tubos horizontales grandes). Esta asociación se encuentra en cuerpos de agua efímeros desarrollados en zonas deprimidas de la planicie de inundación. Ciertas estructuras asociadas incluyen a megarizolitos, preservados en los depósitos de canales fluviales. La asociación de trazas fósiles de la Formación Toro Negro (Mioceno) en muy diversa. Los depósitos de lóbulos de desbordamiento presentan trazas de alimentación meniscadas y trazas de habitación (Taenidium barretti, Scoyenia gracilis y Palaeophycus tubularis). Los depósitos de barras arenosas emergidas incluyen huellas de aves y mamíferos (Fuscinapeda sirin, Macrauchenichnus rector, cf. Venatoripes riojanus, huellas heterópodas pequeñas, huella

Thus, three new ichnospecies Matthew described appeared in the 1975 Treatise on Invertebrate Paleontology as “unrecognized or unrecognizable” and were mostly forgotten by vertebrate ichnologists. These traces include Hylopus (?) variabilis, Nanopus (?) vetustus and Bipezia bilobata. One ichnospecies, Hylopus (?) variabilis, here is retained as a valid tetrapod footprint ichnotaxon and reassigned to the ichnogenus Limnopus as a new combination, together with other poorly preserved specimens Matthew labeled, but never described. Nanopus (?) vetustus and Bipezia bilobata named by Matthew in the same paper, have been reexamined and remain as nomina dubia. Here we document the variation of digit proportions and trackway parameters in 25 trackways (69 step cycles) from nine localities and seven further specimens with incomplete step cycles from the type locality of Ichniotherium cottae (Gottlob quarry) in order to find out whether this type of Ichniotherium tracks represents a homogeneous group or an assemblage of distinct morphotypes and includes variability indicative for evolutionary change in trackmaker locomotion. According to our results, the largest sample of tracks from three Lower Permian sites of the Thuringian Forest, commonly referred to Ichniotherium cottae, is not homogeneous but shows a clear distinction in pace length, pace angulation, apparent trunk length and toe proportions between tracks from Bromacker quarry and those from the stratigraphically older sites Birkheide and Gottlob quarry.

    A revision of tetrapod footprints from the late Carboniferous of the West Midlands, UK Luke E. Meade, Andrew S. Jones and Richard J. Butler School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences, University of Birmingham, Birmingham, United Kingdom ABSTRACT A series of sandstone slabs from Hamstead, Birmingham (West Midlands, UK), preserve an assemblage of tetrapod trackways and individual tracks from the Enville Member of the Salop Formation (late Carboniferous: late Moscovian–Kasimovian). This material has received limited previous study, despite being one of the few British sites to preserve Carboniferous tetrapod footprints. Here, we restudy and revise the taxonomy of this material, and document it using 3D models produced using photogrammetry. The assemblage is dominated by large tracks assigned to Limnopus isp., which were made by early amphibians (temnospondyls). A number of similar but smaller tracks are assigned to Batrachichnus salamandroides (also made by temnospondyls). Dimetropus leisnerianus (made by early synapsids) and Dromopus lacertoides (made by lizard-like sauropsids such as araeoscelids) are also present. This ichnofauna contrasts with a slightly stratigraphically older, more extensive and better-studied assemblage from Alveley (Shropshire), which is dominated by small amphibians with relatively rare reptiliomorphs, but which lacks Dromopus tracks. The presence of Dromopus lacertoides at Hamstead is consistent with the trend towards increasing aridity through the late Carboniferous. A single slab with Late Palaeozoic tetrapod footprints from East Greenland has been housed at the Natural History Museum of Denmark for decades without scientific notice. The specimen comes from the Mesters Vig Formation of northern Scoresby Land in East Greenland and con- tains a monospecific assemblage of tetrapod footprints that we assign to Limnopus Marsh 1894. As there is no significant morphological difference from other records of this ichnogenus from North Received 29 February 2016 America, Europe and North Africa, the described tetrapod footprints can be referred to eryopoid Accepted in revised form 28 June 2016 temnospondyl trackmakers.

ABSTRACT - Tetrapod trace fossils (primarily footprints) provide signifi cant insight into some major events of the Paleozoic evolution of tetrapods. The oldest fossils of tetrapods are Middle Devonian footprints from Ireland. Bona fi de Devonian tetrapod footprints indicate lateral sequence walking by quadrupedal tetrapods with a smaller manus than pes. These trackways indicate that tetrapods other than “ichthyostegalians” remain to be discovered in the Devonian body-fossil record. Devonian tetrapod footprints are from nonmarine paleoenvironments, so they do not support a marginal marine/marine origin of tetrapods. Nevertheless, the Devonian tetrapod footprint record is too sparse to be of paleobiogeographic signifi cance and to evaluate unsubstantiated claims of Late Devonian tetrapod mass extinctions. “Romer’s gap”, a supposed paucity of Early Mississippian terrestrial fossils, has largely been fi lled by sampling and description of already known fossils. It includes the fi rst substantial assemblage of tetrapod footprints, from Blue Beach, Nova Scotia, Canada. This assemblage consists of footprints of small and large temnospondyls and reptiliomorphs, which supports the concept that the Carboniferous diversifi cation of terrestrial tetrapods had begun during (or before) Tournaisian time.
