Meadowlands in time: Re-envisioning the lost meadows of the Rother valley, West Sussex, UK Alastair W. Pearson 1 and Philip J. Soar 2 1 Department of Geography, University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth PO1 3HE, UK. [email protected] (corresponding author) +44(0)23 9284 2472 2 Department of Geography, University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth PO1 3HE, UK. [email protected] +44(0)23 9284 2482 1 Meadowlands in time: Re-envisioning the lost meadows of the Rother valley, West Sussex, UK Abstract Historically, meadows provided an essential crop of hay and common grazing in a delicately managed sustainable system in harmony with their environment and were of vital importance to the agricultural cycle of farming communities. Using archival and remotely sensed data, this paper provides a speculative re-construction of a former floodplain water management system and examines the changing fortunes of the floodplain meadows of the Rother valley, West Sussex, revealing the process of change in both the physical and cultural landscape. The inevitable decline of the floodplain meadows of the Rother was part of a nationwide transformation brought about by the introduction of new farming practices operating in a fast- changing tenurial landscape, dominated by th e growth of landed estates where commoners ’ rights were viewed with growing contempt. Today, the current vista of the Rother reveals only remnants of the past landscape where marginal habitats, riparian fringes and meadows have made way for a monoculture of permanent pasture of poor conservation value, supporting low biodiversity and offering little to mitigate against flood risk and poor water quality.

The charity has enabled work across each of these components and has published several reports which have provided the basis of new legislation, government policy or practice. For the last decade, the charity has focused on developing the Safe Systems approach, and in particular leading the establishment of the European Road Assessment Programme (EuroRAP) in the UK and, through EuroRAP, the global UK-based charity International Road Assessment Programme (iRAP). Since the inception of EuroRAP in 1999, the Foundation has been the UK member responsible for managing the programme in the UK (and, more recently, Ireland), ensuring that these countries provide a global model of what can be achieved.

In the summer of 2017 we were able to survey over 5km of the lower reaches of the River Kird, from Kirdford to the point where it reaches the River Arun.

History Walk A walk through over 2000 years of local history and see some of the area’s most magnificent scenic views. This walk: • is 4.8-6.5 kilometres (3-4 miles) long • takes about 2.5-3.5 hours • has no steep hills and is easy walking • is unsuitable for a push chair • has no stiles on the shorter route and two kissing gates on the longer route • can be slippery when wet • uses OS map 197 • has a café at the start and a pub and café with toilets half way round When walking always follow the countryside code. www.countrysideaccess.gov.uk A short background to Pulborough and its history: The landscape features that have dominated the history and development of the Pulborough area are the river and floodplain, the greensand ridge that runs east-west through Pulborough village and the fertile area to the north of the greensand ridge. From left: The Old Rectory; Cattle in brooks; Lower Street This has generated the development of Pulborough Village as the heart of the area, the hamlets of Nutbourne, Mare Hill and Codmore Hill around the greensand ridge and isolated agricultural buildings to the north of the greensand ridge. The Pulborough area closer to the river Arun has been inhabited since very early times due to the river providing fish and a waterway for trade and improving the fertility of the flood plain to the south. Pulborough is a “linear village”, that is a long straggle of houses under the greensand ridge that were served by wells that drained out of the greensand at this level.

  • Stopham Estate, Brut 2017 West Sussex, Southern England, England
Stopham Estate, Brut 2017 West Sussex, Southern England, England PRODUCER "Precision, Passion, Craft and Sustainability" is the apt motto of Simon Woodhead's, Stopham Estate. Having begun his career as an engineer, designing parts for Formula One racing cars, Simon discovered a passion for wine while living in Spain and in 2005 he enrolled at Plumpton College to study winemaking. In 2007 Simon planted six hectares of vines, predominantly Pinot Gris and Pinot Blanc, at Stopham Estate, near Pulborough West Sussex. The estate is known locally for its ancient buildings that were recorded in the Domesday Book, as well as the swans that swim the River Arun, the banks of which form the lower boundary to the vineyards. Their small winery is in a converted barn on the estate that Simon leases from the owners, the Barttelot family. VINEYARDS The Stopham Estate vineyard forms part of the South Downs National Park in West Sussex. The main challenges in the vineyard are deer, which roam the parkland and, unsurprisingly, the weather. This is helped by the sandy, free draining soils and south- facing aspect, which maximise sun exposure and ripening. The Stopham farm animals provide copious amounts of organic fertiliser to improve the sandy soils. Sustainable farming is at the heart of their philosophy, with pesticides only used when absolutely necessary. VINTAGE A warm spring in 2017 prompted early development. However, frosts came later in the spring and affected buds. This meant yields were down, but a warm summer ensured the remaining crop displayed good concentration and ripeness. VINIFICATION The Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes were fermented in stainless -steel tanks and bottled in July 2018 for secondary fermentation.
