He worked for several bank note engraving companies in New York City. In 1863 the National Note Bureau of Engraving and Printing hired him as one of their first vignette engravers. Gugler worked as a bank note engraver in Chicago in 1870. He moved to Milwaukee to join his son, Julius Gugler, who was working with Henry Seifert as a lithographer. The three artists went on to form Seifert, Gugler and Company (a.k.a. Milwaukee Lithographing and Engraving). Gugler and his son formed their own firm, H. Gugler and Son, in Milwaukee in 1878. Jacob Perkins JP-111 Born in Newburyport, Massachusetts, Perkins was apprenticed to a goldsmith. Perkins created some of the best steel plates for engraving, and started a printing business with engraver Gideon Fairman. They began with school books, and also made currency that was not being forged. In 1809 he bought the stereotype technology (prevention of counterfeit bills) from Asa Spencer, and registered the patent, and then employed Asa Spencer. Perkins made several important innovations in printing technology, including new steel engraving plates. Using these plates he made the first known steel engraved USA books (The Running Hand, school books, 8 pages each). He then made currency for a Boston Bank, and later for the National Bank. The four sons (Alfred, Walter, Sir Sydney and Albert) joined the company, which was converted into a limited company in 1876, reconstituted in 1879 and 1897. During the American Revolution, the Willcox paper mill furnished the banknote paper for the Continental Congress. Willcox refused to provide Congress with his financial records.
