While Lennon Wanted Peace for Mankind, Deep Down He Did Not Want Peace in His Own Life, Or Rather, He Was Incapable of Enjoying It
While Lennon wanted peace for mankind, deep down he did not want peace in his own life, or rather, he was incapable of enjoying it and exploitation. Lennon may have been egotistical but he was compulsive in his public gestures rather than calculating. Granted, he became reclusive in the late 1970s, but when he re-emerged, it was his very desire not to place barriers between himself and the public which proved his undoing. Had he lived, it's probable, judging by the occasionally banal bliss of his later output, that Lennon might not have made much music of worth, that he would have been a museum piece in his own lifetime. But then, who'd have guessed in the late- 1980s, when both Dylan and Bowie's reputations were at their lowest ebb, that over a decade later they'd be praised for making some of the best music of their careers? Had Lennon lived, there would have been further, fascinating convulsions to come. It would have been interesting, also, to see what caustic scorn he might have poured on the Thatcher/Reaganite, greed-is-good era. Lennon's death has at least frozen him in iconic permanence - something many were reminded of when Oasis presented a huge image of the man by Lennon's last days... way of a backdrop to one of their 1990s gigs, John and Yoko outside prompting an outbreak of mass genuflection. the Record Plant, 44th St, NYC, December 1980 His value is as much in his failure as his success - that his idealism and the very counterculture he once fronted seems to have evaporated in these cleverer, But that merely reflects the misplaced register anything like as loudly as Lennon's did across more loveless and hopeless times makes his absence intelligence of modern times and modern stars. -

The Artist Alive: Explorations in Music, Art & Theology, by Christopher Pramuk (Winona, MN: Anselm Academic, 2019). Copyright © 2019 by Christopher Pramuk. All rights reserved. www.anselmacademic.org. Introduction Seeds of Awareness This book is inspired by an undergraduate course called “Music, Art, and Theology,” one of the most popular classes I teach and probably the course I’ve most enjoyed teaching. The reasons for this may be as straightforward as they are worthy of lament. In an era when study of the arts has become a practical afterthought, a “luxury” squeezed out of tight education budgets and shrinking liberal arts curricula, people intuitively yearn for spaces where they can explore together the landscape of the human heart opened up by music and, more generally, the arts. All kinds of people are attracted to the arts, but I have found that young adults especially, seeking something deeper and more worthy of their questions than what they find in highly quantitative and STEM-oriented curricula, are drawn into the horizon of the ineffable where the arts take us. Across some twenty-five years in the classroom, over and over again it has been my experience that young people of diverse religious, racial, and economic backgrounds, when given the opportunity, are eager to plumb the wellsprings of spirit where art commingles with the divine-human drama of faith. From my childhood to the present day, my own spirituality1 or way of being in the world has been profoundly shaped by music, not least its capacity to carry me beyond myself and into communion with the mysterious, transcendent dimension of reality. -

DESCRIPTORS *Bands (Music); Content Analysis; Discographies; *Music; Musicians; *Popular Culture IDENTIFIERS Media History; Music Ensembles; *Rock and Roll; *Rock Music ABSTRACT Based on the argument that (contrary to critical opinion) the musicians in the various bands associated with Bosstown Sound were indeed talented, cohesive individuals and that the bands' lack of renown was partially a result of ill-treatment by record companies and the press, this paper traces the development of the Bosstown Sound from its beginnings in the nightclubs of Boston in 1967 to its end in 1969. In addition, the paper provides complete discographies, including critical commentary, of records produced by bands associated with the Bosstown Sound. The bands of the Bosstown Sound include: The Apple Pie Motherhood Band, The Bagatelle, The Beacon Street Union, Bo Grumpus, Eagle, Earth Opera, Eden's Children, Sure Looks Real, The Ill Wind, Jolliver Arkansaw, Orpheus, Phluph, Puff, and Ultimate Spinach.
