    פרשת בלק )בחו"ל – חקת-בלק( תש"פ הרב יוסי שפרונג - ראש בית המדרש Traveling to and from the Hospital on Shabbos Doctors, nurses, and members of Hatzala often need to carry out their work on Shabbos. Medical personnel are sometimes unable to avoid Shabbos hospital shifts, or are summoned on Shabbos to attend to a patient due to their particular expertise. Hatzala members obviously must respond to incidents as and when they occur. Since hospital shifts are usually several hours in length (and for those in training, shifts may even be longer than a full day) the question arises1 as to whether medical personnel may travel by car to or from the hospital on Shabbos if they cannot reasonably travel on foot.2 Similarly, may Hatzala members return by car from the scene at which they performed first aid or the hospital after transporting a patient? Traveling to the Hospital or the Scene of an Accident The Shulchan Aruch (O.C. 328:2) rules that it is a Mitzva to be Mechalel Shabbos for a life-threatening illness, and this would include traveling on Shabbos to treat a patient whose life is in danger. Furthermore, he rules (ibid. 12) that when we are Mechalel Shabbos in that scenario, we endeavor that it should not be done by non- Jews or children but by adult Jews. However, the Rema adds that it is preferable to ask a non-Jew if doing so will not cause any delay. The Taz (ibid. 5) and other Poskim dispute the Rema’s ruling, and, ostensibly, so does the Shulchan Aruch (Chazon Ovadia, Shabbos 3, p281).

The technology is "tantamount to murder," according to the rabbis, who are aligned with the Ashkenazi haredi community's most respected living halachic authority, Rabbi Yosef Shalom Elyashiv. "If the Health Ministry goes ahead with its plans to implement a technology that shortens the lives of terminally ill patients, the nations of the world will say that Judaism condones transgressing one of the Ten Commandments - Thou Shalt not Kill," Rabbi Ya'acov Weiner said last week. "That would be a terrible desecration of God's name." Weiner, who heads the Jerusalem Center for Research, Medicine and Halacha, made the comments at a conference on Jewish medical ethics, organized by the center for the past 11 years, that brings together religious doctors and Halacha experts. Weiner and other rabbis who spoke at the conference, including a senior representative of Elyashiv, said the Terminally Ill Patient Law, approved by the Knesset in 2006, contradicted Jewish law. They specifically targeted a technology condoned in the new law that allows a terminally ill patient to choose to be connected to a ventilator that is automatically turned off by a timer at a future date. The timer ventilator, which is in its last stages of development, will be introduced in hospitals in coming months.

It is a book that has taken an eternal place on the Jewish bookshelf. Since its publication in 1965, tens of thousands of copies have been printed and have found a place of honor in the homes of Sabbath observers. Whatever problem arises regarding the Sabbath and how it should be properly observed in the Jewish home, Shemirat Shabbat is the address. In many homes, family members study the book together every Sabbath so that laws concerning the Sabbath become familiar. When the book was first published, the author called it “Proper Sabbath Observance – Practical Halacha for the Jewish Home in consideration of the issues that have arisen in our time”. It is, in essence, the proper application of the halacha to modern life. The book deals with the entire body of laws concerning the Sabbath, from day-to-day work such as cooking and baking, bathing, taking things out of the house into the street, and carrying objects forbidden on the Sabbath, to tending gardens and plants, the use of makeup and cosmetics, caring for the sick and emergency situations, looking after babies and infants, and the other questions that arise on the Sabbath. Shemirat Shabbat brought about a real revolution in Torah literature by taking halachic terms that have been accepted for centuries and adapting them to modern times.
