Set Theory: Taming the Infinite This is page 54 Printer: Opaque this CHAPTER 2 Set Theory: Taming the Infinite 2.1 Introduction “I see it, but I don’t believe it!” This disbelief of Georg Cantor in his own creations exemplifies the great skepticism that his work on infinite sets in- spired in the mathematical community of the late nineteenth century. With his discoveries he single-handedly set in motion a tremendous mathematical earthquake that shook the whole discipline to its core, enriched it immea- surably, and transformed it forever. Besides disbelief, Cantor encountered fierce opposition among a considerable number of his peers, who rejected his discoveries about infinite sets on philosophical as well as mathematical grounds. Beginning with Aristotle (384–322 b.c.e.), two thousand years of West- ern doctrine had decreed that actually existing collections of infinitely many objects of any kind were not to be part of our reasoning in philosophy and mathematics, since they would lead directly into a quagmire of logical con- tradictions and absurd conclusions. Aristotle’s thinking on the infinite was in part inspired by the paradoxes of Zeno of Elea during the fifth century b.c.e. The most famous of these asserts that Achilles, the fastest runner in ancient Greece, would be unable to surpass a much slower runner, provided that the slower runner got a bit of a head start. Namely, Achilles would then first have to cover the distance between the starting positions, dur- ing which time the slower runner could advance a certain distance. Then Achilles would have to cover that distance, while the slower runner would again advance, and so on. Even though the distances would be getting very small, there are infinitely many of them, so that it would take Achilles infinitely long to cover all of them [4, p. 179]. Aristotle deals with this and Zeno’s other paradoxes (Exercise 2.1) at great length, concluding that 2.1 Introduction 55 the way to resolve them is to deny the possibility of collecting infinitely many objects into a complete and actually existing whole. The only al- lowable concept is the so-called potential infinite. While it is inadmissible to consider the complete collection of all natural numbers, it is allowed to consider a finite collection of such numbers that can be enlarged as much as one wishes. As an analogy, when we study a function f(x) of a real variable x, then we may be interested in the behavior of f(x) as x becomes arbitrarily large. But we are not allowed simply to replace x by 1 to find out, because we might get a nonsensical result. A paradox of a more overtly mathematical nature, given by Galileo Galilei (1564–1642) in the seventeenth century, shows that there are just as many perfect squares as there are natural numbers, by pairing off each number with its square: 1 2 3 4 ¢ ¢ ¢ l l l l l : 1 4 9 16 ¢ ¢ ¢ But on the other hand, since not all natural numbers are perfect squares, there are clearly more natural numbers than perfect squares. Galileo even observes that the perfect squares become ever sparser as one progresses through the natural numbers, making the pairing above even more para- doxical. He concludes that “the attributes ‘larger,’ ‘smaller,’ and ‘equal’ have no place either in comparing infinite quantities with each other or comparing infinite with finite quantities” [65, p. 33]. A comprehensive ac- count of the philosophical struggle with the concept of the infinite from early Greek thought to the present can be found in [123] (see also [145]). It was left to a theologian from Prague in the early nineteenth century to make a systematic study of mathematical paradoxes involving infinity. After studying philosophy, physics, and mathematics at the University of Prague, Bernard Bolzano (1781–1848) decided that his calling was to be a theologian, even though he had been offered a chair in mathematics. As a professor of theology at the University of Prague, beginning in 1805, Bolzano nonetheless spent part of his time pursuing mathematical research. After being dismissed from his position for expressing allegedly heretical opinions in his sermons, and being prohibited from ever teaching or pub- lishing again, he used his enforced leisure to work almost exclusively on mathematics. His philosophical interests had always drawn him to ques- tions about the foundations of mathematics, its definitions, methods of proof, and the nature of its concepts. Thus, he naturally was led to the philosophy of the infinite. Not only did he conclude that mathematics was well equipped to deal with infinite sets in a systematic manner, free of contradictions, he even went as far as arguing that mathematics was the 56 2. Set Theory: Taming the Infinite proper realm in which to discuss and resolve all paradoxes involving the infinite.1 Bolzano made it clear that he considered the property of a one-to-one correspondence between a set and a proper subset of itself, as in Galileo’s example above, fundamental to the nature of infinite sets, to be exploited in a mathematical investigation, rather than to be used as justification to avoid all discussion of the matter. By a one-to-one correspondence between two sets we mean a pairing of the elements of the sets in such a way that each element of one gets paired with a unique element of the other, without any elements in either set being left over (Exercises 2.2–2.3). The first text in this chapter is a collection of excerpts from Bolzano’s book Paradoxien des Unendlichen (Paradoxes of the Infinite) [16], published after his death. Bolzano worked for the most part in isolation, with little contact to the rest of the mathematical world. Paradoxes of the Infinite was published in 1851 in Germany, thanks to the efforts of Bolzano’s friend F. Prihonsky. Unfortunately, this work, as well as his other manuscripts in analysis and geometry, failed to draw the attention of the mathematical centers in the rest of Europe until quite some time later. When the dramatic events in the theory of infinite sets started to unfold with the work of Georg Cantor (1845–1918) more than twenty years later, the motivation came from the foundations of analysis (see the analysis chapter), one of the major sub- jects that occupied the mathematical world during much of the nineteenth century, rather than Bolzano’s pioneering insights. Since Cantor’s work re- ceived a fair amount of criticism from theologians, however, the views of the theologian Bolzano were of great importance to him. Cantor began his mathematical career in number theory, but soon be- came interested in analysis. During his student days in Berlin, one of his professors was the great Karl Weierstrass (1815–1897), a major figure in the theory of functions during the second half of the nineteenth century, and Cantor began working in this area. An important problem he turned to was the question whether it was possible to represent a function of a real variable by two different so-called trigonometric series, that is, certain infinite series whose terms involve trigonometric functions. Given f(x), can one find real numbers an; bn for n = 0; 1; 2;::: such that X1 f(x) = an sin(nx) + bn cos(nx)? n=0 1In India, on the other hand, the Jaina mathematics of the middle of the first millenium b.c.e. not only entertained the idea that many different kinds of infinity could exist, but actually developed the beginnings of a system of infinite sets and infinite numbers [91, pp. 18, 218–219, 249–253]. 2.1 Introduction 57 Furthermore, for what values of x is this equation valid, and what condi- tions on f(x) and the series are necessary? (See the appendix in the analysis chapter for a brief review of infinite series.) Cantor set out to show that whenever such a representation existed it was unique, under quite general conditions. In 1870, he succeeded in showing that such uniqueness followed if the series was convergent for every x with limit f(x). Not satisfied with this result, he worked out several extensions during the following year. Af- ter showing first that the result held true if the hypothesis was true for all but finitely many values of x, he pushed on to show that certain infinite sets x1; x2; x3;::: of exceptional values were allowed. (For details on Cantor’s work on trigonometric series see [36, Ch. 2].) As Cantor was trying to generalize his result yet further, it became clear to him that the sorts of questions he needed to answer about infinite sets of points on the real number line required a much deeper understanding of the nature of the real numbers than was possible with the essentially geometric concept of the number line. What was needed was an “arithmetization” of the real number concept. Besides Cantor, several other mathematicians had recognized the same need and offered their own constructions of the real numbers, depending on what they perceived to be the essential property of the number line (see the analysis chapter). Richard Dedekind (1831–1916) based his construction on the insight that each real number is in some sense determined by all the rational numbers to the left and right of it; it is a “Dedekind cut,” in modern terminology. Thus, the real number then could be defined as that pair of sets of rational numbers [38]. Dedekind succeeded in defining the arithmetic operations of addition and multiplication on such pairs and proving that they behaved just as one would expect from actual real numbers.

Widmeyer University of Michigan [email protected] Abstract The principle of trichotomy from the American philosopher Charles S. Peirce can be used to categorize processes into the triad of transactional, informational, and relational. The usefulness of these categories is explicated by a comparison with structuration theory and control theory, and elaborated with a consideration of democracy in a knowledge economy. These three example applications of the process triad show the generality of the conceptual categories and provide a natural way of bringing ideas from social and ethical theories into information systems design. Modeling the world and understanding business applications through the use of the Trichotomy of Processes should facilitate the development of more valuable information systems. "General set theory is pretty trivial stuff really" (Halmos; see [H, p. vi]). At least, with the hindsight afforded by Cantor, Zermelo, and others, it is pretty trivial to do the following. First, write down a list of axioms about sets and membership, enunciating some "obviously true" set-theoretic principles; the most popular Hst today is called ZFC (the Zermelo-Fraenkel axioms with the axiom of Choice). Next, explain how, from ZFC, one may derive all of conventional mathematics, including the general theory of transfinite cardi­ nals and ordinals. This "trivial" part of set theory is well covered in standard texts, such as [E] or [H]. Jech's book is an introduction to the "nontrivial" part. Now, nontrivial set theory may be roughly divided into two general areas. The first area, classical set theory, is a direct outgrowth of Cantor's work. Cantor set down the basic properties of cardinal numbers. In particular, he showed that if K is a cardinal number, then 2", or exp(/c), is a cardinal strictly larger than K (if A is a set of size K, 2* is the cardinality of the family of all subsets of A). Now starting with a cardinal K, we may form larger cardinals exp(ic), exp2(ic) = exp(exp(fc)), exp3(ic) = exp(exp2(ic)), and in fact this may be continued through the transfinite to form expa(»c) for every ordinal number a.

Reviewed by Stephen Palmquist, Department of Religion & Philosophy, Hong Kong Baptist University, Kowloon, Hong Kong, E-mail: [email protected] https://doi.org/10.1515/jtph-2020-0021 Notwithstanding its title, this book is not about the science called “logic”—at least, not insofar as “science of logic” refers to the rules, procedures, and guiding principles that constitute the laws of thought. While Huaping Lu-Adler often refers in passing to logical operations such as syllogisms, she never discusses their rules of operation. She does mention the law/principle of (non)contradiction eight times and that of identity once (p. 14); yet these all appear in quotes or side-comments. (She never mentions the law of excluded middle.) Similarly, she limits her treat- ment of potentially relevant post-Kantian developments in logic to a few brief glosses on Boole and Frege (pp. 3, 195–7), without referring to propositional logic, fuzzy logic, dialetheism, etc. However, this is all by design, so prepared readers need not be surprised by such omissions. Indeed, as the author announces in the Introduction and repeatedly reminds her readers, the book’s focus is on “the philosophy of logic” (pp. 3–4), not on the mechanics of how logical relations as such actually function. The Introduction acknowledges that historians of logic have typically either defined logic narrowly and therefore found nothing new—and thus little worth writing about—in Kant and other Enlightenment philosophers, or else they have followed Kant’s immediate predecessors by defining logic in a broader sense than we do nowadays and have therefore written voluminously on the views of “logic” advanced during this period, but in ways that relate very little to modern con- ceptions of logic.

    Cantor on Infinity in Nature, Number, and the Divine Mind Anne Newstead Abstract. The mathematician Georg Cantor strongly believed in the existence of actually infinite numbers and sets. Cantor’s “actualism” went against the Aristote- lian tradition in metaphysics and mathematics. Under the pressures to defend his theory, his metaphysics changed from Spinozistic monism to Leibnizian volunta- rist dualism. The factor motivating this change was two-fold: the desire to avoid antinomies associated with the notion of a universal collection and the desire to avoid the heresy of necessitarian pantheism. We document the changes in Can- tor’s thought with reference to his main philosophical-mathematical treatise, the Grundlagen (1883) as well as with reference to his article, “Über die verschiedenen Standpunkte in bezug auf das aktuelle Unendliche” (“Concerning Various Perspec- tives on the Actual Infinite”) (1885). This is a necessary initial step in conflict analysis. Here, our task is to approach conflicts where arms are used and the role this gives to conflict resolu- tion. Armed conflict is one category of the general phenomenon of social conflict. It has some distinct features. It normally grows out of non-armed conflict, in the sequences illustrated in Figure 3.3, but involves not just a shift in behaviour. It has other aspects associated with the three concepts of parties, incompatibility and action. First, there is a particular role for the state as soon as a conflict becomes armed. The reasons for this are explained in Section 4.2. There are also armed, as well as unarmed, non-state actors in many armed conflicts, and, for a fuller analy- sis, it is necessary to include them.

    Logique & Analyse 213 (2011), x–x CANTOR-VON NEUMANN SET-THEORY F.A. MULLER Abstract In this elementary paper we establish a few novel results in set the- ory; their interest is wholly foundational-philosophical in motiva- tion. We show that in Cantor-Von Neumann Set-Theory, which is a reformulation of Von Neumann's original theory of functions and things that does not introduce `classes' (let alone `proper classes'), developed in the 1920ies, both the Pairing Axiom and `half' the Axiom of Limitation are redundant — the last result is novel. Fur- ther we show, in contrast to how things are usually done, that some theorems, notably the Pairing Axiom, can be proved without invok- ing the Replacement Schema (F) and the Power-Set Axiom. Also the Axiom of Choice is redundant in CVN, because it a theorem of CVN. The philosophical interest of Cantor-Von Neumann Set- Theory, which is very succinctly indicated, lies in the fact that it is far better suited than Zermelo-Fraenkel Set-Theory as an axioma- tisation of what Hilbert famously called Cantor's Paradise. From Cantor one needs to jump to Von Neumann, over the heads of Zer- melo and Fraenkel, and then reformulate. 0. Introduction In 1928, Von Neumann published his grand axiomatisation of Cantorian Set- Theory [1925; 1928]. Although Von Neumann's motivation was thoroughly Cantorian, he did not take the concept of a set and the membership-relation as primitive notions, but the concepts of a thing and a function — for rea- sons we do not go into here. This, and Von Neumann's cumbersome nota- tion and terminology (II-things, II.I-things) are the main reasons why ini- tially his theory remained comparatively obscure.
