The September toll of military occupation of the Northeast
During the month of September, 114 civilians were killed and 29 were disappeared. A further 52 were either arrested or abducted. The arrested and abducted figures are also included in the toll statistics because in the present context the end result of all four military activities are the same. The difference is that the families live in hope a bit longer in the case of disappeared, abducted and arrested. In the end the majority of these cases also end up as “death due to disappearance” in the longstanding tradition of Sri Lanka.
Some of the cases reported in the list presented as PDF file are,
• The two girls, Tharshika and Valarmathy, cycling through the Jaffna Street were arrested by the Sri Lankan military. Tharsika’s dead body was handed to the hospital by the SLA with her friend Valarmathy who was sick. Valarmathy got epilepsy when she was arrested. SLA said Valarmathy took cyanide but this was denied in the hospital medical report. The death of Tharshika remains mysterious.
• In two separate cases, one in Jaffna and another in Trincomalee, a father and his two year old daughter were killed together.
• In one day seven people were killed in three separate incidents in Kurumankadu and Mathahuvaiththakulam in Vavuniya.
• A Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) employee traveling in CEB vehicle during curfew time after obtaining permission from the military was shot and killed by the SLA in Elalai in Jaffna
• Farmer and his wife and a relative were shot and killed in their home in Mirusuvil Jaffna. The relative was an activist against military occupying private homes.
• Two men returning from Valvai SLA camp in Jaffna after inquiry were shot dead.
• Sewalanka project manager and his mother were shot and killed in Jaffna. The younger relative at home who witnessed the shooting is mentally affected.
• Three bodies were found at the border of a Military Zone. The three men were arrested by the military. The military made a statement that the men were killed by unknown gunmen.
• Three civilians were taken following a round up by the paramilitary and then shot dead on the street in Paddiyadi in Batticaloa
• The body guard for TNA MP for Amparai, Pathmanathan, for was shot dead.
