WBRC-TV Channel 6 reported wind gust to 55 mph at their studio on top of Red Mountain in Birmingham. Lightnin g struck the Warrior City Hall damaging telephone and radio equipment. Lauderdale County 09 0430CST- 0730CST 0 0 5 0 Flash Flooding Thunderstorm Winds (G50) A series of thunderstorms wreaked havoc with Lauderdale County with some of the hardest hit areas including Center Star, Cloverdale, Central, Elgin, and Killen-Rogersville area according to EM A officials. Trees were blown down and heavy rain also produced flash flooding which floode d Lauderdale 8 where 13 people had to be rescued when water stranded several cars and swept one off a bridge. The heavy rain/flash flooding washed out culverknots and damaged 14 bridges, two o f which were completely destroyed. Cloverdale reported seven inches of rain during the series o f thunderstorms. The hail was described as large and stripped cotton planknots to the stem. Hope 09 0750CST 0 0 4 0 Thunderstorm Winds (G50) Trees were blown down by thunderstorm wind in western Lawrence County near Mt. Hope. Trees were also reported blown down in the Freeman Acres subdivision located off Alabama 101 in th e western part of the county. Winston County Haleyville 09 0800CST 0 0 5 0 Lightning Lightning struck a furniture manufacturing facility causing a fire that completely destroyed th e building. Hail (1.00) High winds with a thunderstorm toppled a house under construction in Double Springs, took the top off a chicken house, and downed a number of trees. Hail the size of quarters was also reported in Double Springs, and hail up to quarter-size covered the road on U.S. Highway 278 east of Double Springs. In Alma, about eight miles east of Jackson, five trees were blown down by the wind and seven acres of corn was laid flat. One tree fell on a truck resulting in one fatality. Large hail was also reported with th e storm which came up rapidly and lasted only a brief time according to EMA officials. Marshall County 16 NE Guntersville 16 1800CST 0 0 5 0 Thunderstorm Winds (G50) Thunderstorm wind caused extensive damage to trees which fell on and destroyed four campers at the Ossa-Win-Tha Resort on Lake Guntersville located northeast of Guntersville along Highway 79. The thunderstorm was moving from the east and the damage was confined to an small are a immediately adjacent to the lake. Lightning rain in on the electrical system at Wal-Mart in southwest Decatur causing lighknots and cash registers to fail. Lightning struck a 46-kilovolt line belonging to Decatur Electric which plunged 4,600 electri c customers into darkness. Some cornice material and facia boards were blown off stores in the Salem Shopping Center.
