The Multicultural Council of Saskatchewan supports its non-profit organization members to implement programming with results that contribute to MCoS’ strategic plan. We strategically invest in member organizations and schools to carry out projects that help to achieve our mission, aims, and objectives. We look for applications that clearly demonstrate a connection between the activities and the impact they have on the objectives, with an evaluation plan to measure the achievement of those objectives. We also welcome your input on how well the direction and process of these investment streams meet the needs and opportunities in your communities. See below for examples of MCoS’ investment in multiculturalism.

Davidson School – The Trial of Louis Riel

Grade 5 and 6 students at Davidson School have been learning about social justice issues through their Arts Education course. While learning techniques related to the production of art and how to express ideas through art, students have also been learning about global issues that are affecting the most vulnerable in the world today. They have been learning about how to have a positive impact on the world around them by taking action on both local and global projects. This has led the students not only to learn about other cultures in order to understand them better, but to learn about their own cultures and history as well.

Part of the students’ learning included a trip to view a live theatre production – The Trial of Louis Riel – which deals with social justice and cultural issues that are part of Saskatchewan’s heritage and are still prevalent to this day. Fortunately, this production was in the same location as the Mackenzie Art Gallery, which will allowed the students to also continue their exploration of visual arts without increasing our budget expenses. While there, students viewed the art through a cultural and social justice lens, looking for examples of how other artists have expressed their views and social/cultural backgrounds.

Follow-up on this learning experience included discussion as well as opportunities for students to create their own written and artistic responses.

The Way Home presentation by Jeanne Corrigal at Dorintosh Central School

Jeanne Corrigal is a Métis Film maker whose work centers on our connection to each other and to nature. She hosted reflective screenings on Jim Settee’s teachings and had students consider their own journies and stories. For the younger students she took exerpts from the screenings and they made drawings about the film’s Matchbox story.

Corrigal held a workshop for grade 3 to 6 students, where they made their own matchboxes from a template, adding their own teachings to fill the matchbox. Grade 7/8 students also viewed the screenings and made reflective drawings of Settee’s life, focusing on his respect for others. Corrigal incorporated respect in all of her sessions and students learned to respect themselves as well as others. Corrigal’s presentation definitely left an impact on the students and school, as they have been discussing the film and workshops since in class. Students made posters regarding respect, which are hanging in the school hallway for everyone to see.

The culture aspect of the presentation was powerful as one could hear the students discussing Jim Settee’s life. It was a presentation that definitely made an impact on our school and community.

Heritage Days at Thomson Community School

Celebrating multiculturalism is a long-standing tradition at Thomson Community School. A large percentage of our students come from other countries, all around the world. We also have a large First Nation’s population. Activities are held through the year to highlight this diversity.

We began our Heritage celebrations this year with a focus on Chinese New Year in February. We had an assembly featuring Lion Dancers and a Kung Fu demonstration. Students also prepared and served a Chinese lunch. Several students helped to create red lucky money packages for each student. In April, a French lunch was held with students again helping to prepare and serve the food. Following the luncheon students enjoyed creating Eiffel Towers from plastic cups. A Zumba instructor was hired to teach Zumba and Latin dancing to all the students in the school. The sessions were well enjoyed and it was good exercise for all.

Our main event, Heritage Days, began on May 6th and ran all week. We had a daily school assembly featuring different cultural groups. There were PowerPoint presentations on Uganda, Kenya, India, China, Bangladesh, and Israel. Students from our school as well as invited guests performed First Nations, Metis, Filipino, Afghan, Nepali and Indian dances. Our Arts Education teacher led the students in African singing, games, and drumming.

Trends & Issues in Multiculturalism ● ● ●

"The Body Economic: Why Austerity Kills" -- A very interesting interview It was hailed as a giant step forward for racial integration in a country that has long been ill at ease with its growing immigrant classes. But Cecile Kyenge's appointment as Italy's first black cabinet minister has instead exposed the nation's ugly race problem. A statistical study using data from the Great Depression, to post-communist Russia, to austerity in Greece suggests there is a measurable human cost to severe government cutbacks. More>>>

IN RESPONSE TO… “Thousands of immigrants flock to Saskatoon" (Star Phoenix, May 9, 2013) By Asit Sarkar (who happens to be an MCoS Director)

In the news item "Thousands of immigrants flock to Saskatoon" (SP May 9), some of the comments attributed to Prof. Ken Coates are somewhat alarming. They make sweeping generalizations about immigrant newcomers regarding their supposed perspectives on First Nations Canadians. He gives the erroneous impression that they (immigrant newcomers) are "not necessarily well-disposed towards aboriginal rights". Such a comment is not only just a conjecture on his part (and not evidence-based), he also ignores the vast diversity of heritages and experiences of immigrant newcomers (not all immigrants are non-Europeans and some of them are of indigenous heritage).

He goes on to refer to "ridings in the Toronto area" and concludes that "they just don't buy into the public policy agenda that says dealing with these historic grievances is an obligation of the current population". I have lived in Saskatoon for the past 43 years and am unaware of any scientific research done in Saskatoon or Saskatchewan that would support such a conclusion. Indeed there have been numerous studies that point out such thinking on the part of the people of Euro-Canadian heritage.

Prof. Coates also says the immigrant newcomers and First Nations people are competing for jobs. Making such a generalization also ignores the fact that not all immigrant newcomers have come here with uniform skills. Many of them have come with highly specialized and professional skills that are in short supply in Saskatchewan. Some of them are taking time (in some cases, due to systemic barriers) to make transitions into positions appropriate to their skills. Immigrant settlement and integration programs are addressing them. Within Saskatchewan, there is now a better (if not perfect) recognition that training and placement opportunities for First Nations people do need to improve significantly, but to associate this need with the growth of Saskatchewan's immigrant population is not helpful.

We all need to recognize that Saskatchewan and Canada have the dual public policy challenges of ensuring the rightful place of the First Nations Canadians in the workplace as well as meeting the ever widening skill gaps that can only be filled by a thoughtful immigration and settlement policy. Fulfilling our historical obligation to the First Nations and Metis community has to be a commitment for all, immigrants who have come here in the early years as well as those recent ones.
