TONIGHT’S GAME -The Penguins host the Boston Bruins (TV: ROOT SPORTS; Radio: 105.9 The X) at PPG Paints Arena. -Pittsburgh has won three-straight games, outscoring foes, 19-9. That includes goals for totals of eight, four and seven goals, consecutively. -The Penguins are currently riding a season-high tying six-game home winning streak. They can establish a new high water mark with a victory today. -Pittsburgh is 12-0-1 in its last 13 home contests. -Bryan Rust helped Pittsburgh win the first meeting against the Bruins on Dec. 14 by scoring his first career goal. -The Penguins have scored at least once on the power play in 13 of their last 18 games (20 for 63; 31.7%). -Pittsburgh blueliner Justin Schultz continues to lead all NHL defensemen in scoring since Nov. 30 (heading into Saturday’s games) with 27 points (7G-20A) in his last 23 games.

QUICK HITS 1) Evgeni Malkin has a season-high-tying six-game point streak (6G-3A-9PTS). A point today would allow him to establish a new season long streak.

2) Pittsburgh has scored 32 goals during its current six-game home winning streak, an average of 5.3 goals per game. For the season, the Penguins have a league-high 95 goals in 23 home contests, an average of 4.13 goals per game.

3) The Penguins’ average of 4.13 home goals per game this year is the highest mark of the Sidney Crosby era. Before this season, the highest home goals per game average during that span was 3.56 in 2011-12.

4) Pittsburgh is 11-2-2 this season without Kris Letang.

5) Sidney Crosby sits 11 points shy of joining the 1,000-point club.

TEAM NOTES:

PITTSBURGH-NEW ENGLAND SHOWDOWN Pittsburgh and Boston take center stage in the sports world today, as this Pens-Bruins contest will be followed by the AFC Championship Game between the NFL’s Steelers and New England Patriots at 6:40 PM. During the last two seasons, the Penguins are 3-0 in games played on the same day that the Steelers play a playoff game (1-0 this year; 6-2 win on Jan. 8 vs. TBL).

BEST HOME MARK The Penguins own the NHL’s best home record with a 19-2-2 mark thus far. That puts the club on pace to establish a new team record with 34 home victories. Right now, the team record is 32, established in 1995-96. Not only are the Penguins the NHL’s best home team, but Evgeni Malkin is the league’s top home point producer, having tallied 11 goals, 23 assists and 34 points. He notched his 11th career hat trick in Pittsburgh’s last home game against Washington.

BACK ON TOP Friday night’s seven-goal fury moved the Penguins back on top of the NHL goals-per-game leaderboard. Pittsburgh is averaging 3.60 goals per game. If that figure held over the rest of the season, it would be the best mark of the Sidney Crosby era. The previous best for a complete season is 3.38 during the lockout-shortened 2012-13 campaign. Six of the top-12 highest scoring teams this year, based upon goals per game, belong to Metropolitan Division teams.

MALKIN, KUNITZ KEEP RISING Evgeni Malkin’s goal against Carolina on Friday was his 317th career tally, moving him into sole possession of fourth place on the team’s all-time goal-scoring list. That goal ensured that Mario Lemieux, Jaromir Jagr, Sidney Crosby and Malkin rank Nos. 1-4 on the Penguins’ all-time goals, assists and points lists. Chris Kunitz jumped into a ninth-place tie with Martin Straka on the Pens’ all-time goal-scoring list with his 165th goal in the same contest.

DON’T TAKE IT FOR GRANTED As the NHL All-Star Break looms in a couple of weeks, it’s a good time to delve deeper into the numbers being produced by Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin this season. Both are having MVP-caliber years, and they are playing arguably the best hockey at the same time in their 11 years together. Heading into today, Crosby and Malkin are two of just three NHL players (Connor McDavid is the other) to reach 50 points (as of Jan. 21). In the 39 games they’ve skated together, at least one has recorded a point in 37 of the 39 games. They are on pace to combine for 93 goals and 195 points this year. Those totals would represent (by far) the highest goal totals they’ve posted together, and the third-highest point total (highest since 2008-09). As things stand now, it appears as though both players will score 30 goals in the same season for just the third time together, and the first time since ’08-09.

SHEARY KEEPS DELIVERING For the second time in three games, Boston native Conor Sheary tallied a pair of goals in Friday’s win at Carolina. Those tallies extended Sheary’s point streak to three games (4G-2A-6PTS), one shy of his career-best streak, which he established between Dec. 27-Jan. 8 of this year. Prior to the start of Saturday’s games, Sheary ranked 25th in the NHL with a 0.39 goals-per-game average and 37th with an average of 0.82 points per game. Friday’s game in Carolina marked Sheary’s 82nd career NHL game – the equivalent of a full season. He has produced 22 goals, 19 assists and 41 points in those contests. That’s not bad for an undrafted free agent whose first two professional contracts were an ATO and an AHL-only deal with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins.

STELLAR SID STATS Sidney Crosby has been the NHL’s best and most consistent player since the calendar flipped to 2016 last January. Here are some Crosby facts from his run:

*He hasn’t gone back-to-back games without a point since Feb. 24-27 of last season. During that span, he has accumulated points in 51 of 60 games, amassing a total of 80 points (38G-42A). *Pittsburgh is 18-2-2 this year in games when Crosby scores a goal. *Since Crosby returned from missing the first six games of the season with a concussion, he has points in 31 of 39 games. The Penguins are 23-5-3 when he records a point and 3-4-1 when he does not.
