Abstracts for 2015 Student Research Conference Abston, Summer "Architectural Reformation Of Educational Institutions" (Shahnaz Aly) Children serve as an important factor concerning the future of this world. In order to positively impact our future we must start with education by addressing daily function in schools. The aim of this research is to create an environment that is conducive not only for performance but also for health. This is accomplished by appealing to sensory elements. Studies show that by increasing natural lighting and controlling the acoustics, learning can be improved. Health is a vital aspect in producing an environment for learning. By increasing ventilation and not using hazardous materials, such as VOCs and BPAs, adverse health effects can be averted. Materials can serve a dualistic purpose of appealing through sensory perception and meeting sustainability goals. Additionally, materials can also aid in code compliance. Certain types of glass offer a myriad of benefits for regulation and security advances. Moreover, through better selection of materials, schools can improve their educational environment and prevent sick building syndrome all while becoming more sustainable and accommodating to building codes. This presentation will highlight the topics that were adopted in the design of a high school. The Sundance Film Festival is Sundance Institute’s flagship public program, widely regarded as the largest American independent film festival and attended by more than 120,000 people and 1,300 accredited press, and powered by more than 2,000 volunteers last year. ANTI-RACISM RESOURCES UNLEARNING SYSTEMIC RACISM Updated: July 1, 2020 As community tensions rise in the wake of multiple acts of police violence, the veil of how racism is embedded in our society is removed. The Y is an organization focused on addressing the most critical needs of our community and dedicated to advancing diversity, equity and inclusion for all. As such, we must begin to address how to undo racism and become “anti-racists” at an individual, organizational, and societal level. We seek to more effectively lead as an anti-racist, multi-cultural organization, yet as we embark on this journey together, we do so with humility, fully cognizant that as a local and national institution we have so much more work to do. Anti-racism is the work of actively opposing racism by advocating for changes in political, economic, and social life. Anti- racism tends to be an individualized approach and set up in opposition to individual racist behaviors and impacts. (Definition by Race Forward) We invite all Y communities to take this journey with us and begin to unpack what it means to be an anti-racist. We know that the first step includes unlearning previous notions and educating ourselves as individuals committed to this journey. “They See a Caricature”: Expanding Media Representations of Black Identity in Dear White People GRAEME JOHN WILSON Throughout the history of American television, representation of the black community, particularly African Americans, has been problematic at best.1 Early representations of the community on the small screen served to reinforce dominant stereotypes and power structures by portraying “black characters [as] happy-go- lucky social incompetents who knew their place and whose antics served to amuse and comfort culturally sanctioned notions of […] white superiority” (Gray 75). Such caricatured portrayals only endured in subsequent decades, perpetuating regressive stereotypes (Punyanunt-Carter 241-2). Stereotypical characteristics of black Americans in popular media include, but are not limited to, criminality, ignorance, and materialism (Collins 161; Jackson 46; Punyanunt-Carter 243). A significant breakthrough for the community premiered in 1984 in the form of The Cosby Show, which is now regarded as a landmark text in black representation on television (Dates 306-8; Jones 182). The Cosby Show, a sitcom starring comedian Bill Cosby and centered on an affluent African American family in New York City, was acclaimed for breaking stereotypes through its portrayal of “a vast and previously unexplored territory of diversity within blackness—that is, upper- 1 The term black is used to “signif[y] all non-White minority populations,” including the African American and African Caribbean populations.
