BIOGRAPHY Born from a blurred phrase first uttered in an intoxicated voicememo sent off to Bladee in late 2017, “Legendary Member” is what Thaiboy Digital maintains all of his life, every choice and every step, literally every single moment has come down to. Ever since his infamous and disruptive deportation from Sweden in early 2015, Khon Kaen born and Stockholm raised Thaiboy Digital has inch by inch gotten the better of Bangkok, slowly working his way up from playing dim club shows in the citys frenzied underbelly to a 30th floor penthouse overlooking the ancient temple district of Rat Burana, casually dropping the eurotrance/trap hybrid EP “S.O.S” and Bladee collaborative album “AvP’” about halfway up. Steadily connected with the mythical Drain Gang, “Legendary Member” was recorded in a handful of overheated sessions in Stockholm and London during Thaiboys VISA regulated visits in the summer of 2018 together with producers GUD, Woesum and Whitearmor, featuring guest appearences from Ecco2k, Bladee and Yung Lean, Running high on subdued feelings of ecstasy, triumph and glowing hopes of achieving something spectacular, “Legendary Member” is a compact body of work, pastel coloured and glossy at a glance, gritty and melancholic upon closer inspection - fragile melodies and tones on the verge of decay sprinkled like sparkling dust and carefully stitched together with the oversaturated, dense basslines to create cute, menacing compositions seemingly fading in and out of consciousness. Throughout the record, Thaiboy Digital is shifting through hypersensitive singing and liquid, cocky raps, his articulation swaying between tender pillow talk and careless semi-threats mimicking the sun and the moon, locked in a constant dance of light and darkness; hope and despair; love and loss. -

Musical Identity in the Contemporary World Thematic Content Analysis about the Creation of Musical Identity among Emo Rappers Student Name: Laura Emrichová Student Number: 507994 Supervisor: Arno van der Hoeven MSc Media and Creative Industries Erasmus School of History, Culture and Communication Erasmus University Rotterdam Master's Thesis July 1, 2019 Abstract Music plays an essential part of our everyday lives and often serves as a representation of people’s tastes, values and beliefs. Musical identity illustrates the combination of these aspects among a particular group of people who engage in the same style of music and provides the basis for studying the development of music and its impact on the society. In the early 2010’s a number of adolescents independently shared their beats on the streaming service of SoundCloud and created a new sub- genre of emo rap. Emo rap has a unique aesthetic of emotional lyrics with a dark and depressive character, sparking controversy and was the fastest growing genre of 2018 on Spotify. That is why, this research is set out to explore the construction of musical identity of emo rap, by taking a closer look at the artists’ lifestyle and the societal issues they are concerned with. It is expected that musical identity is closely connected to the lifestyle choices these adolescents make and how they present their ideas about the current state of the society. The sub-genre emo rap has not been academically researched before and the aim of this study is to contribute to the existing literature about musical identity with this contemporary sub-genre and to explore the youth development in the 21st century. -

Born in Minsk and raised in Stockholm, Yung Lean rose to prominence in 2013 with his song "Ginseng Strip 2002" which went viral on YouTube. Later that same year, he released his debut mixtape, Unknown Death 2002, and the following year, he released his debut studio album, Unknown Memory. In 2016, Yung Lean released his second mixtape, Frost God, and his second studio album, Warlord. In 2017, he released his third studio album, Stranger, followed by his third mixtape, Poison Ivy, in 2018. Yung Lean’s fourth studio album, Starz, was released in 2020. His maternal grandfather was British-Jewish playwright Arnold Wesker. -

Rapping in the clouds: shifting identities and metamodern tendencies in Internet hip-hop Scott Hicken Media Studies Honors Thesis Defense Date: 4 / 9 / 18 Committee Members: Nabil Echchaibi (Advisor), Kendra Gale (Advertising), Steven Frost (Media Studies) Abstract: The current anxieties and insecurities of identity felt by many in the wake of globalization exhibits a need for a shift in the way we see ourselves and the Other. In order to demonstrate one example of this shift, I will analyze a growing hip-hop scene heavily influenced by the Internet, and how it is fostering new pathways of cultural interaction and a resulting fluidity in the process of identity formation. I will first lay down a theoretical framework for such a shift using the works of cultural theorist Stuart Hall and postcolonial philosopher Édouard Glissant, as well as French philosophers Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guttari. From there, I will align this shift in the notion of identity with a larger cultural development labeled by Timotheus Velmeulen and Robin van den Akker as metamodernism, described as an oscillation between irony and sincerity, and explore some of the modes of expression which this development consists of. Finally, I will then analyze two case studies, the American rapper RiFF RAFF and the Swedish rapper Yung Lean, with these modes of expression and theoretical framework in mind, and explore the way in which their respective journeys illustrate this shift in identity. 2 Introduction Today we live in a unitary world where distances are reckoned by hours and no longer by weeks and months.
