PROFESSIONAL POSITION DESCRIPTION

Position Title: Vice for Student Affairs Division: Academic & Student Affairs Department: Student Affairs Location: Portland, Gorham and LAC Schedule: Regular, Full time with some evenings and weekends as needed Reports to: Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic & Student Affairs

STATEMENT OF THE JOB: The University of Southern Maine is seeking an individual to fill the role of Vice Provost for Student Affairs. Under the direction of the Provost, the Vice Provost for Student Affairs will have oversight in planning, developing, implementing, and advising on programs, services, activities, and processes for students in their life at the university, including student conduct and community standards, identity-based experiences, sexual violence, Title IX, development, intercultural student affairs, student government, student organizations, disability services, health & counseling services, residence life and housing, veteran services and other student resource areas. The Vice Provost will be responsible for helping to realize the full potential of a combined academic and student affairs division, including integrating learning opportunities across the student experience in alignment with USM’s academic vision and strategic plan.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Leads the Dean of Students, Campus Life, and all Student Affairs departments and services for residential and commuter/nonresidential students.

Creates and maintains a healthy campus environment through services, programs and co- curricular activities that encourage a sense of community among students, faculty and staff.

Works with Academic Affairs to embed learning outcomes in a holistic student experience.

Supervises the Dean of Students, Director of Student Engagement, Director of Intercultural Student Affairs, Assistant Dean of Students and Deputy Title IX Coordinator, and Director of Residential Life and Housing.

Serves as the primary resource to all students, faculty, and staff on Student Affairs matters.

Plans and implements strategic initiatives, develops partnerships and collaborations, resolves issues and responds to crisis incidents.

Serves as a liaison among campus administration, student governing bodies, and student organizations.

Partners with internal and external organizations to provide ongoing compliance training and professional development for all professionals in Student Affairs.

Stewards resources and allocated funding in an impartial way to support institutional priorities.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Directly supervise 5-10 Student Affairs professionals.

PUBLIC AND PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITIES RELATED TO JOB PERFORMANCE:

Serves on USM and UMS committees.

Attends professional development programs and seminars around Title IX, Student Conduct and Community Standards, Student Health and Counseling, ADA, FERPA, Student Affairs.

INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL CONTACTS:

Internal:  Students and families  Departments related to Enrollment Management and Student Affairs  UMS Risk Management  UMS Chief Student Affairs Officer  Dean of Students  Provost  President  College Deans & Academic Affairs  University stakeholders

External:  Community members as appropriate  Enforcement and Emergency Response Officers

Ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality.

Organizational and time management skills with the ability to set own priorities and coordinate multiple assignments with fluctuating and time-sensitive deadlines.

Ability to design and oversee implementation of student and staff services and programs in an efficient and cost-effective manner leading to continuous improvement of services.

Knowledge of national practices and philosophy of student development theory, including learning and involvement theories, leadership theories and issues related to access, equity and retention.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

 Master’s degree in a related field (terminal degree preferred) or international degree equivalency  Five years of increasing/progressive management/leadership experience in higher education and/or student affairs  Experience working with diverse populations and deep understanding of the importance of equity, inclusion, and belonging in higher education  Experience in the supervision of professional personnel  Strong communication skills  Strong interpersonal skills  Excellent judgment and ethical decision-making skills  Strong organizational, administrative, and leadership skills  Familiarity with higher education federal regulations
