11 TIGHTBEAM Up until now Bujold has kept the relationship concerning Aral, Cordelia, and Oliver on the “down-low” even from readers. I checked with other reviewers and found I was not alone in not realizing that they were even lovers let alone involved in a ménage a trois. Some of the re- ally fanatic fans of the series have been going back to the older books to see if the author really foreshadowed this development or has just thrown it into the story arc now after thirty years, but I wasn’t planning on doing it myself. May the Schwartz Be With You ...Review by Tom McGovern A few issues ago, I reviewed The MLJ Companion, which is a de- tailed history of the Archie Comics superheroes. More recently, I’ve been reading The Silver Age Sci-Fi Companion by Mike W. Barr, which is also an interesting book, though not as impressive or absorb- ing as the MLJ work. There are a few differences between the two works. MLJ is in full color throughout, whereas Silver Age Sci-Fi is all in B&W, except for the covers. The MLJ book is also about twice as thick, and consists of historical articles, interviews and anecdotes, with a small amount of the content consisting of actual listings of issues, artists, writers, dates, etc. Silver Age Sci-Fi, on the other hand, consists mostly of listings that are much more detailed than those in MLJ, along with a few articles and interviews thrown in. That’s not necessarily a bad thing; it’s just a dif- ferent approach. -

Contact: [email protected] ‘Superman believes that a wife’s place is in the home’: Superman’s Girl Friend, Lois Lane and the representation of women Michael Goodrum Superman’s Girl Friend, Lois Lane ran from 1958-1974 and stands as a microcosm of contemporary debates about women and their place in American society. The title itself suggests many of the topics about which women were concerned, or at least were supposed to concern them: the mediation of identity through heterosexual partnership, the pressure to marry and the simultaneous emphasis placed on individual achievement. Concerns about marriage and Lois’ ability to enter into it routinely provide the sole narrative dynamic for stories and Superman engages in different methods of avoiding the matrimonial schemes devised by Lois or her main romantic rival, Lana Lang. -

Guynes, B.A., Western Washington University M.A., University of Massachusetts Boston Advisor: Aaron Lecklider, Ph.D. Second Reader: Rachel Rubin, Ph.D. Between 1988 and 1994 American comic books engaged the politics, problematics, and crises of the AIDS epidemic by injecting the virus and its social, cultural, and epidemiological effects on gay men into the four-color fantasies of the superhero genre. As the comic-book industry was undergoing major internal changes that allowed for more mature, adult storylines, creators challenged the Comics Code Authority’s 1954 sanction against the representation of homosexuality to create, for the first time, openly gay characters. Creators’ efforts were driven by a desire to recognize the reality of gay men’s lived experiences, especially crucial in the epidemic time of the AIDS crisis. -

A Brush With the Air Force 42 AIR FORCE Magazine / July 2007 prototype for Corkin was Air Force Col. Milton Caniff was out front with “Terry and Philip Cochran, a noted World War II pilot and leader of air commandos in the Pirates,” but other cartoonists also found Burma. (See “The All-American Air- their calling in the wild blue yonder. man,” March 2000, p. 52.) He became a continuing character in “Terry.” In a famous “Terry and the Pirates” Sunday page from 1943, Corkin opened with, “Let’s take a walk, Terry,” and then delivered an inspirational talk about A Brush With the war and the Air Force as he and the newly fledged pilot Terry strolled around the flight line. The page was “read” into the Congressional Record and reported in the newspapers. Terry, Flip, and their colleagues had a great following among airmen, and the Air Force By John T. Correll the strip had considerable morale and public relations value. Gen. Henry H. “Hap” Arnold, Chief of the Army Air Forces, assigned an officer to as- sist Caniff with any technical details he needed. Caniff produced another strip, “Male Call,” without charge for camp and base newspapers. It featured Miss Lace, who was reminiscent of the Dragon Lady but less standoffish. It is difficult today to comprehend what a big deal the funnies used to be. Everybody read the comic strips. Characters were as well known as movie stars. The strips were printed much larger than present comic strips are. On Sunday, a popular strip might get a whole color page to itself. -
