More than 14 countries were represent- ed at the meeting of the UWC, the leading diaspora organization, which is led by pres- ident Askold Lozynskyj of New York City. The annual meeting offered an oppor- tunity for leaders in the new diaspora communities to get advice from leaders in the established communities, said Michael Sawkiw Jr., president of the Ukrainian Congress Committee of America (UCCA). “They’re trying to open up Saturday schools, and some governments are try- ing to help, while others aren’t necessari- ly cooperative,” he said. “They’re trying to preserve culture and language. That’s where we were as a Ukrainian American community 50 to 75 years ago.” Upon returning to Kyiv, a UWC dele- gation met with Foreign Affairs Minister Borys Tarasyuk and Verkhovna Rada Chairman Volodymyr Lytvyn. Ukrainian Catholics celebrate the liturgy to mark the historic transfer of their Church’s headquarters from Lviv to Kyiv. -

Tura Satana T ura S at ana (July 10, 1938 – February 4, 2011) was a T ura Sat ana Japanese American actress, vedette and exotic dancer. From 13 film and television credits, some of her work includes the exploitation film Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill! (1965), and the science fiction horror film The Astro-Zombies (1968). Early li f e Satana was born T ura Luna Pascual Yamaguchi in Hokkaid?, Japan. Her father was a Japanese silent movie actor of Filipino descent, and her mother was a circus performer of Native American (Cheyenne) and Scots- Irish background. After the end of World War II and a stint in the Manzanar internment camp in Lone Pine, California, Tura and her family moved to Chicago. Walking home from school just before her 10th birthday, she was reportedly gang raped by five men. His first home-made productions, which he started making when he was sixteen, testify to the influence of these very different approaches to cinema in terms of production, distribution and promotion, as well as genres and themes. 2 Drawn to rival movie cultures—Hollywood productions and major studios theaters on the one hand, and local, independent theaters and drive-ins on the other (Doherty, 2002, 92)—he decided to teach himself how to make his own movies and modeled his films on the exploitation and underground filmmakers he idolized (Waters, 1991, 44). -
