Product Guide When Fishing is More Than Just a Hobby! 2020 PRODUCT GUIDE 2020 marks the second year for Dobyns Rods in the great state of Texas and we couldn’t be happier to be here! This will also be our 16th year in business and we are amazed at the growth we have sus- tained. We thank you all for believing in our brand. We do our best to listen to what our customers want and if we can, we give it to you! The Xtasy Series has been a huge success and we had trouble keeping some models in stock in its first year. Our initial sales projections were off a bit but we are now fully stocked and ready for the season! We are also happy to announce that we are going to bring in 4 new models in early 2020! Our most pop- ular 7’5” rods will now also be available with a split handle and we are adding the new DRX 725C! In 2019, we added our first ever crappie rod. The CL 601SF is very popular and the response has been so strong that we are working on adding more models. In 2020 we will add a series of trout, crappie and blue gill rods. We are excited to have Fred Roumbanis, an MLF Pro and longtime friend of Gary Dobyns, join the Dobyns Team. Together we are creating a Fred Roumbanis Signature Series which will be available in late 2019. See page 11 for more information on the Fred Roumbanis Signature Series! XTASY SERIES The Xtasy Series is super light, very sensitive, incredibly balanced and has fast crisp actions. This is an ultra-high end series featuring Toray’s latest Nano material and Fuji Torzite guides. The Xtasy Series is a “feel” series of rods. These are made for jigs, worms and drop-shot styles of fishing. These rods will excel with deep water techniques where super sensitivity is required. There are fourteen models, five spinning and nine casting and each rod has a unique serial number. It really came down to materials in the blank. I have always said the blank is the “heart” of the rod. Once Toray started making their Nano materials and quickly upgrading them to even higher levels, I knew I could build the Xtasy Series the way I always wanted it. I knew I’d use the Fuji Torzite guides and high end cork but I needed a “special” blank material. I will openly say these rods are super light but I could have made them lighter. I added weight with some of my cosmetics with extra coatings and an aluminum decorative butt piece. To me, a high end rod should look HIGH END!!     or many anglers today, the notion of dunking a live minnow, crayfish, or worm for bass is about as appealing as trolling. For some, using livebait F seems like the antithesis of power fishing—moving fast to cover great ex- panses of water. To cash tournament checks, anglers often target groups of bass that run far smaller than solitary lunkers. In that situation, a fast approach with artificial lures is the ticket. Consider that livebait is banned ban in most tourna- ments, and over years, a livebait taboo has arisen. But bass couldn’t care less about taboos. They eat live food. Particularly for trophy bass, which become wise to the mechanical movements of most lures, livebait excels. Throughout the early 20th century, and even today, the biggest Florida- strain largemouths in far southeastern waters fall to wild shiners. While other lures come and go, live shiners are eaten by more 6- to 10-pound bass than anything else. Big bass don’t become conditioned to them, as they do to artifi- cials. On famed Florida fisheries such as Lake Okeechobee, the St. Johns River, and Stick Marsh, big bass guides continue to rely primarily, if not exclusively, on live shiners. At the opposite end of North America, California’s deep, clear reservoirs are home to the mightiest largemouths swimming today. Many of the heavi- est bass taken in recent history have fallen to live crayfish presented patiently along deep rock points in impoundments like Castaic, Casitas, Hodges, Irvine, and Murray. Although swimbait fishing has upstaged other presentations in recent years, live crayfish continue to be a money method for huge, wary bass.

One bait that consistently shines under adverse conditions is a swimbait. Swimbaits are designed to be cast and retrieved at a steady, rapid rate. Similar to a spinnerbait or crankbait, the lure provides the action. The entire body shimmies as you pull a swimbait through the water. They are relatively easy to use but they do take a bit of getting used to. The problem is not in the retrieve but in the hook set. If you react to a swimbait like you would to a spinnerbait you will miss a lot of fish. This makes them frustrating for new users. Smallmouth bass usually hammer a spinnerbait or crankbait. The thumping action of the swimbait causes smallmouth to follow the swimbait for a longer period of time. Sometimes they fully commit and just smoke it while at other times they leave it alone and can follow the bait back to the boat. Most of the time they just tease the angler by bumping the swimbait, resulting in missed fish. When I first started fishing swimbaits it took a while to build up my confidence due to all the missed fish. I experimented with different speeds of my retrieve but the results were the same.
