33RD ANNUAL REPORT TO THE COMMUNITY FOREVERFREDERICK COUNTY JULY 2018–JUNE 2019 DEAR FRIENDS, In late 2018, we shared that the Community Foundation was on the cusp of some unprecedented and exciting opportunities to influence change in our community. Our journey in 2019 has included the release of the 2018 Frederick County Human Needs Assessment Report and the launch of the Forever Frederick County campaign to establish a flexible and sizeable endowment fund. The Frederick County Human Needs Assessment data revealed facts about this place we know and love that were enlightening, frightening, encouraging, and discouraging. The good news is the assessment data inspired all of us to work together to create a plan to prepare for the future. The Forever Frederick County endowed funds will help us meet our community’s greatest needs in the decades to come, proactively rather than reactively. The donors who have already given or pledged campaign support are excited about the positive difference Forever Frederick County funds will make. More details about these projects can be found on pages 6–9. While much attention has been paid to the initiatives mentioned above, our FY2019 year was very successful in many other ways. With your generous support, 1,945 donors made 3,601 gifts to one or more of our 721 funds. Most gifts were added to our existing endowment that spends 5 percent of the annual market value on grants and scholarships. Grants benefited more than 280 nonprofits, and 304 students received scholarships for post-secondary education or trade and technical training. Many local nonprofits serving in the areas of health and human services, the arts, elder care, historic preservation, health care, youth programs, assisting those who are homeless or precariously housed, the environment, civic causes, animal welfare, and much more received grant support. Thank you. Every gift entrusted to us, no matter its size, contributes towards Frederick County’s bright future. We are grateful for your support in FY2019 and going forward to help ensure that Frederick County is forever. Thomas E. Lynch, III, Esq. Nancy M. Thrasher Elizabeth Y. It has” partnered with donors like you to turn good intentions into powerful acts of philanthropy. Now, we have embarked on establishing a flexible and sizeable endowment fund to prepare for the future. The Forever Frederick County campaign will create funds to provide grants based on Frederick County’s most pressing needs. Grant requests from local nonprofits providing programs that address our greatest needs far exceed the current funding available. It’s critical that endowed funds are established to generate additional funding so that solutions for these needs can be achieved more quickly. Our county’s current needs have been determined by the 2018 Frederick County Human Needs Assessment (see pages 8–11), and future needs will be discovered using similar studies going forward. It’s impossible to know how these will change over time, so preparedness is key. The time to act is now. Can you imagine all families with young children in Frederick County having access to affordable childcare, transportation, and resources that help them thrive? Helping seniors (those who are 60 and older) age in place with dignity? Reducing the number of people suffering from substance use disorder? These are just a few examples of the greatest needs that already exist. The Forever Frederick County endowed funds will be a powerful influence for change. Your gift to the campaign will make a difference as the board of trustees continues to be nimble and proactive, directing its strategic grantmaking where it is most needed—now, and in the future. You can help. You can be part of this movement. You can be a leader by stepping forward. Your gift today will help ensure that Frederick County is forever. To learn more about the Forever Frederick County campaign, visit www.ForeverFrederickCounty.org. There are many ways you can make a gift to the campaign, and our staff is happy to have a confidential conversation about these giving options. The full report is guiding the Community Foundation’s grantmaking and scholarship programs for the next decade. It is also a tool that serves as a common reference for governments, nonprofits, and other organizations that seek to improve well-being in Frederick County. The results elevate the following as high priorities, and the Community Foundation is transitioning its discretionary grantmaking
