However, the Pombaline accusation of obscurantism and scientific illiteracy also played a central role in the history of anti-Jesuitism in Portugal, mainly due to its wide acceptance and lon- gevity. This argument was not only directly relevant for the expulsion of the Jesuits in the eighteenth century but it was also a keystone of the anti-Jesuit propaganda that eventu- ally led to the expulsion of the Society of Jesus from Portugal in the twentieth century. "Tragicamente, o pior com certeza ainda estar por vir", indicou Clohessy, ao acrescentar que a verdade dos abusos e encobrimentos "generalizados há muito tempo e profundamente arraigados ainda não chegou à superfície na maioria das nações". A organização citou uma dúzia de cardeais da Argentina, Austrália, Canadá, Estados Unidos, Gana, Honduras, Itália, México e República Tcheca acusados de proteger os padres pedófilos ou por realizar declarações defendendo os padres ou minimizando a situação.     Shunning Direct Intervention: Explaining the Exceptional Behaviour of the Portuguese church Hierarchy in Morality Politics by Madalena Meyer Resende (FCSH-UNL and IPRI-UNL) and Anja Hennig (European University Viadrina) Abstract Why are the Catholic churches in most European countries politically active in relevant morality policy issues while the Portuguese hierarchy has remained reserved during mobilizing debates such as abortion and same-sex marriage, whose laws’ recent changes go against Catholic beliefs? The explanation could be institutional, as the fairly recent Portuguese transition to democracy dramatically changed the role attributed to the church by the former regimes. However, in Spain – whose case is similar to Portugal in matters of timing and political conditions – the hierarchy’s behaviour is different. This begs the question: what elements explain the exceptionality of the Portuguese case? This article shows that the Portuguese case illustrates an element usually not emphasized in the literature: the ideological inclination of the church elites. The article thus concludes that institutional access is a necessary, but not a sufficient, condition for the church to directly intervene in morality policy processes. A church may have access to influence political decision makers but, for ideological reasons, may be unwilling to use it. We regard the Holy See’s appearance before the Committee on the Rights of the Child as an historic opportunity to ensure that organizations such as those in the Holy See -State - Vatican - Catholic Church - which claim their superiority and privileges over local and even international authorities and do not accept any kind of formal responsibility, as a signatory state of the Convention and the subsequent Treaties, should be addressed as being responsible for thousands of cases of sexual abuse committed in many parts of the world, for many years, due precisely to their structural behavior of protection and the complicit cover-up of abusers. They should therefore be held accountable for the violation of articles in the Convention because of their contempt and systematic violation of the rights and higher interest of girls and their preference for covering-up perpetrators rather than protecting and safeguarding victims. This institutional behavior which involved all the levels of authority of the Organization, should be regarded as a STATE CRIME by the Committee on the Rights of the Child. This will help, first and foremost, to restore the dignity and fundamental rights to victims and even enable the organization represented by the Holy See and its authorities, national authorities and all of humanity, to ensure that this type of behavior will never again be repeated in our history, by arguing and claiming to have a superior divine origin to the authorities tasked with safeguarding the rights of the world’s children.

Luigi Giussani (February 22, 2005) and the 38th anniversary of the Pontifical recognition of the Fraternity of Communion and Liberation (February 11, 1982), Masses will be celebrated by bishops and cardinals in Italy and around the world. The Mass will be offered for this intention: “That, in being faithful to the charism of Fr. Giussani and living our belonging to our Holy Church, we may follow Pope Francis’ invitation to ‘follow Jesus’ and ‘listen daily to His call’ which reaches us through His witnesses. Tat was at best deluded, and at worst evil. Te Anglican Church was fully complicit in this appalling behaviour. Abusive clergy were quietly moved from parish to parish, school to school, diocese to diocese, and sometimes overseas. Others were secretly sacked. Criminal activity was not reported to the police and parents were kept in the dark.

    Pope confirms heads of Vatican curial agencies Carol Glatz Catholic News Service | Mar. 31, 2014 Vatican City Pope Francis confirmed the head of the Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life and named among its new members Australian Cardinal George Pell, Canadian Cardinal Marc Ouellet, and Archbishop Joseph Tobin of Indianapolis. The Vatican announced Saturday that the pope confirmed Brazilian Cardinal Joao Braz de Aviz as prefect of the congregation, the Vatican office that oversees the world's religious orders. The new members also include: Cardinals Norberto Rivera Carrera of Mexico City; Luis Tagle of Manila; Bishop John Corriveau of Nelson, British Columbia; and Bishop Kieran O'Reilly of Killaloe, Ireland. Pope Francis also reappointed 11 members to another five-year term, including: Cardinals Francis George of Chicago; Wilfrid Napier of Durban, South Africa; Sean O'Malley of Boston and Jesuit Fr. Adolfo Nicolas, superior general of the Jesuits worldwide. The pope also confirmed French Cardinal Jean-Louis Tauran as president and Comboni Fr. Miguel Ayuso Guixot as secretary of the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue. The new members include Chaldean Patriarch Louis Sako of Baghdad. The pope also named new consultants to the interreligious council, including Benedictine Fr. William Skudlarek, a member of St. John's School of Theology Seminary in Collegeville, Minn., and secretary-general of the international Monastic Interreligious Dialogue; as well as two women: Sr. Carmen Sammut, the Maltese superior general of the Missionaries of Our Lady of Africa; and Ilaria Morali, an Italian professor at Rome's Pontifical Gregorian University. Also Saturday, Pope Francis confirmed the top leadership of the Pontifical Council for Culture, including its president, Italian Cardinal Gianfranco Ravasi.
