Copyrighted Material Introduction The Changing Face of Islam in Bulgaria Silvi, a Bulgarian Muslim and an Avon lady,1 always worried about her roots. Not where she came from, nor who her great-grandparents were. Silvi obsessed about the roots of her hair—how many millimeters of white she could stand before she had to dye it again. When I met her in the small Bulgarian city of Madan in 2005, Silvi was in her late forties and had thick jet-black hair that hung all the way down her back. Over the years the gray had taken over, and it was only nine days after each dye that she could see the silvery sheen glistening at her temples once again. Silvi had been born with the name Aysel, which she was told means “moonlight” in Turkish. She did not care that the communists had made her change her name as she was a rather secular Muslim and really only cared about sell- ing Avon products, which she had been doing for almost ten years. Silvi, short for Silvia, is a Western-sounding name whereas Aysel is Muslim. Since so many Bulgarians associated Muslims with rural life and tobacco growing, it was hard for someone with a Turkish name to project the aura of glamor needed to sell beauty products.“Women will buy more toiletries from ‘Silvi’ than they will from ‘Aysel,’” she told me. In recent months, there had been a growing trend that disturbed her: an increasing number of young women were dressing head to toe in a new Is- lamic style imported from abroad. -

Fertility patterns of native and migrant Muslims in Europe Marcin Stonawski, Michaela Potančoková, Vegard Skirbekk This paper presents (as part of a large global project on demography and religion) unique findings on fertility differentials between Muslims and non-Muslims in Europe, separating between native and immigrant European Muslim populations. For instance, in Romania, Bulgaria, Georgia and Ukraine the greater fertility of Muslims (who tends to be natives) ranges from 0 to 0.4 children per woman; and the Muslim populations have below replacement fertility (ranging from 1.4 to 1.9 children per woman). In Germany and Italy Muslims have 0.5 to 0.6 children more (with a TFR of 1.8 to 1.9 children) than non- Muslims; while in Norway, Austria, Finland, Ireland, the UK and the Netherlands, the fertility discrepancies are higher (from 1 to 1.3 children) and while non-Muslim fertility levels are below replacement, Muslim TFR is relatively high (ranging from 2.4 to 3.3 children). Extended draft Several studies have documented that Muslims in many European countries tend to have greater fertility than individuals belonging to other denominations (Westoff and Frejka 2007, Goujon et al. 2007, PEW 2011). A number of different factors may possibly explain these childbearing differences. Potential explanations include pro-natal statements in Islamic religious scriptures and a greater degree of religiosity of Muslims. Poor socio- economic status (low economic participation rates and educational levels) – particularly among women, generally low socio-economic development and low opportunity costs, and markedly different traditions in terms of marriage timing and marital outcomes also play a role (Iannaccone 1992, Peach and Glebe 1995, McQuillan 2004, Lehrer 2004, Schmid and Kohls. -

Munich: Verlag Otto Sagner/ Südoosteuropa Gesellschaft. 278 pp. �ictor Friedman A better title for this collection would have been Slavic-speakin� M�slims in the So�thern �alkans, since in addition to eight articles on Pomaks in Greece and Bulgaria, the volume includes four articles deal� ing with Slavic speaking Muslims in Albania, the Republic of Macedo� nia, and �urkey. �he articles themselves � seven in German and five in English � consist of four on history and ethnology, all concerned with the Rhodopes, i.e., the mountain chain on the border between Greece and Bulgaria, four on language and identity, of which three look at Rhodop� ian dialects and one compares Pomaks to ethnic Macedonians in Greece, and four labeled �comparative, one looking at the Gorans of Albania, one at the Slavic-speaking Muslims of the Republic of Macedonia, and two at Balkan Muslims in �urkey (one Pomak, the other those expelled from Greece in the so-called exchange of populations mandated by the �reaty of Lausanne in 1�23�. �he topic is certainly a timely one, not only with the increased focus on Islam in the US and EU but also because of recent efforts in Greece to achieve some level of Pomak autonomy, and the failure of such autonomy in Bulgaria. �he introduction by Klaus Steinke and Christian �oss (pp. ��������13, in German� gives an overview of the papers, which were originally present� - - VICTOR FRIEDMAN ed at a conference in 200� with the same title as the published volume, as well as some references to recent books concerning Pomak issues. -

Focusing on the incorporation of immigrants in the period of 1923-1934, the paper argues that the state policies of migration and settlement pursued two primary objectives that were closely connected with the nationalizing measures. They were carried out for the assimilation of non-Turkish-speaking Muslims on the one hand, and for the Turkification of Kurdish-populated eastern provinces on the other. POMAKS AS A BALKAN COMMUNITY AND EVIDENCE OF TURKISHNESS IN THEIR PERCEPTIONS OF IDENTITY* Ahmet GÜNŞEN** ABSTRACT Many nations have been affected by this negative process, but not as much as Pomaks... Because in the geography of the Balkans, there is not any community other than Pomaks that grows by maturing in fierce conditions for the sake of protecting their identity. Pomaks, who were accepted as Islamised Bulgarian, Greek, Macedonian, Serbian etc. in their countries without looking at how they perceived themselves and were under severe pressure, cruelty and policies of assimilation, are unfortunately still grappling over these primitive practices today. This community, called as Pomak, Torbesh, Gorani etc. in the countries where they live, is Muslim in essence and it considers itself Turkish. Therefore, it is a humanistic and scientific necessity to search for elements of Turkishness in the cultural codes and history of this community which has never given up and been deterred from its Muslim‐ Turkish identity by resisting all kinds of pressure, torment and policies towards their identity in a period of centuries and to put them forward with scientific criteria.Since perception is about the cultural identity, consciousness of relativity and accumulation of an individual or a community above all things, it is necessary to go over Pomak communities from these aspects. If the elements of Turkishness in the Pomaks’ perception of identity can be put forward with concrete examples, it can be easily understood why they persistently put emphasis on “Turkishness”. -

Predrag Mutavdžić* University of Belgrade, Faculty of Philology Serbia ОN THE FORMER AND PRESENT STATUS OF THE AROMANIAN LANGUAGE IN THE BALKAN PENINSULA AND IN EUROPE Original scientific paper UDC 811.135.1'282.4(497) This paper gives a brief historical overview of linguistic surveys (Romance and Romanian linguistics) of the status of Aromanian within Romance language linguistics and Balkan linguistic area. Until quite recently, relevant linguists considered this language to be merely a dialect of Daco-Romanian, while today it is generally seen as an autonomous Balkan Romance language. The fact that this language, apart from having a considerably large number of native speakers, especially in their homelands, is little known to general public in the Balkans and in Europe. Key words: Aromanian, pan-Romanianism, Romance languages in the Balkans, endangered languages, Romanian propaganda Current linguistic trends in Europe are quite liberal when compared to those from the past. From a historical point of view and considering the overall development of human society, it seems to have been necessary for Europe to openly face numerous and daunting challenges in many fields, and particularly in those concerning ethnic, linguistic and cultural features of a nation, which caused the aforementioned change. The turbulent 1930s and the Second World War gave rise to challenges which put to test Europe‟s commitment to democracy, principles of freedom, equality and fraternity and to respect all national, human and civil rights. Lessons which came from one of the most turbulent epochs in modern history of this continent radically changed the attitude of European nations toward themselves and other nations. -

Siroky All rights reserved Abstract Secession is a watershed event not only for the new state that is created and the old state that is dissolved, but also for neighboring states, proximate ethno-political groups and major powers. This project examines the problem of violent secession- ist conflict and addresses an important debate at the intersection of comparative and international politics about the conditions under which secession is a peaceful solution to ethnic conflict. It demonstrates that secession is rarely a solution to ethnic conflict, does not assure the protection of remaining minorities and produces new forms of violence. To explain why some secessions produce peace, while others generate violence, the project develops a theoretical model of the conditions that produce internally coherent, stable and peaceful post-secessionist states rather than recursive secession (i.e., secession from a new secessionist state) or interstate dis- putes between the rump and secessionist state. -
