A checklist of alien species with their taxonomy, synonymy and with a complete bibliography of their first records is presented. Analysis of the main trends of alien species introduction, present ecological status, origin and pathways is considered. This meeting brought together over 80 scientists from 19 countries on four continents (Europe, and Co-chairs . 34 North America, South America, and Australia). Representation from the United States was rather low, Parting Shot . 35 but that was expected, as several other meetings on freshwater molluscs were held in the USA earlier in the year. Ellipsaria Vol. 17 - No. 4 December 2015 The First International Meeting on Biology and Conservation of Freshwater Bivalves was held in Bragança, Portugal, in 2012. That meeting was organized by Manuel Lopes-Lima and his colleagues from several academic institutions in Portugal. In addition to being a research scientist with the University of Porto, Portugal, Manuel is the IUCN Coordinator of the Red List Authority on Freshwater Bivalves. The goal of the first meeting was to create a network of international experts in biology and conservation of freshwater bivalves to develop collaborative projects and global directives for their protection and conservation. The Bragança meeting was very productive in uniting freshwater mussel biologists from European countries with their colleagues in North and South America. The meeting format did not include concurrent sessions, which allowed everyone to attend to every talk and all of the plenary talks by leading scientists. -

Lister was the first naturalist to record invertebrates from the River Foss. Martin Hammond [email protected] December 2017 Introduction Over 170 aquatic invertebrate taxa have been recorded from the River Foss, mostly identified to species level but a few identified only to genus, family or other level. The majority of data are from Environment Agency sampling stations at Marton Abbey, Lilling Green, Strensall, Huntington Church and Castle Mills for the period 1995 to 2016. Few records are available for the upper Foss, where a considerable number of additional species are likely to be found. For a few groups, especially molluscs, older records are available and these provide valuable insights into changes in the ecology of the river. Archaeological investigations from riverside sites in central York also provide some interesting information about the past fauna of the Foss. For example, examination of deposits at Layerthorpe Bridge has revealed statoblasts of the bryozoan Lophopus crystallinus from several samples of fluvial sediment (statoblasts are pods of cells which allow asexual reproduction). These deposits ranged in age from the Anglo-Scandinavian period to the 19th century (Hall et al, 2000), indicating that Lophopus had a very long history of occupation of the lower Foss. The Crystal Moss-animal, to give its English name, is a colonial invertebrate which is a filter-feeder on microscopic algae and bacteria in nutrient- rich, slow-flowing waters. Although once widespread, the Crystal Moss-animal has declined greatly. -

Naturally, the handbook describes sampling strategies and techniques, not only designated for the LIFE- project, but constitute the basis for mussel sampling generally according to standard protocol. Thus, this handbook is based on results from former studies and experiences by the authors and the results have been published previously in different formats. The handbook demonstrate suitable sampling techniques which will be used to survey variables which include mussel population size, density and individual age/size before and after restoration measures (Actions C.1 and C.3 in this project) at the twelve project sites that are planned for in this project. Also, this handbook is relevant for additional project-actions, such as the planning work (Action A.3), Host-fish mapping (Action C.1), Re-introduction and allocation (Action C.3), including all information activities (Actions D.1 - D.7). 1 Action A.1 Deliverable” The monitoring Handbook” Background and objectives Nine species of mussels from the group ”large freshwater mussels” are currently found in Swedish waters. -

CITY OF YORK Local Biodiversity Action Plan 2017 City of York Local Biodiversity Action Plan - Executive Summary What is biodiversity and why is it important? Biodiversity is the variety of all species of plant and animal life on earth, and the places in which they live. Biodiversity has its own intrinsic value but is also provides us with a wide range of essential goods and services such as such as food, fresh water and clean air, natural flood and climate regulation and pollination of crops, but also less obvious services such as benefits to our health and wellbeing and providing a sense of place. We are experiencing global declines in biodiversity, and the goods and services which it provides are consistently undervalued. Efforts to protect and enhance biodiversity need to be significantly increased. The Biodiversity of the City of York The City of York area is a special place not only for its history, buildings and archaeology but also for its wildlife. York Minister is an 800 year old jewel in the historical crown of the city, but we also have our natural gems as well. York supports species and habitats which are of national, regional and local conservation importance including the endangered Tansy Beetle which until 2014 was known only to occur along stretches of the River Ouse around York and Selby; ancient flood meadows of which c.9-10% of the national resource occurs in York; populations of Otters and Water Voles on the River Ouse, River Foss and their tributaries; the country’s most northerly example of extensive lowland heath at Strensall Common; and internationally important populations of wetland birds in the Lower Derwent Valley. -

This petition is filed under 5 U.S.C. 553(e) and 50 CFR 424.14(a), which grants interested parties the right to petition for issue of a rule from the Secretary of the Interior. Freshwater mussels perform critical functions in U.S. freshwater ecosystems that contribute to clean water, healthy fisheries, aquatic food webs and biodiversity, and functioning ecosystems. The richness of aquatic life promoted and supported by freshwater mussel beds is analogous to coral reefs, with mussels serving as both structure and habitat for other species, providing and concentrating food, cleaning and clearing water, and enhancing riverbed habitat. The western ridged mussel, a native freshwater mussel species in western North America, once ranged from San Diego County in California to southern British Columbia and east to Idaho. In recent years the species has been lost from 43% of its historic range, and the southern terminus of the species’ distribution has contracted northward approximately 475 miles. Live western ridged mussels were not detected at 46% of the 87 sites where it historically occurred and that have been recently revisited. -

Read Full License Page 1/28 Abstract The Cumberlandian Combshell (Epioblasma brevidens) and Oyster Mussel (E. capsaeformis) are critically endangered freshwater mussel species native to the Tennessee and Cumberland River drainages, major tributaries of the Ohio River in the eastern United States. The Clinch River in northeastern Tennessee (TN) and southwestern Virginia (VA) harbors the only remaining stronghold population for either species, containing tens of thousands of individuals per species; however, a few smaller populations are still extant in other rivers. We collected and analyzed genetic data to assist with population restoration and recovery planning for both species. We used an 888 base-pair sequence of the mitochondrial NADH dehydrogenase 1 (ND1) gene and ten nuclear DNA microsatellite loci to assess patterns of genetic differentiation and diversity in populations at small and large spatial scales, and at a 9-year (2004 to 2013) temporal scale, which showed how quickly these populations can diverge from each other in a short time period. -
