Buffalo Sabres Daily Press Clips December 13, 2018 Sabres' Jack Eichel: Rasmus Dahlin 'doesn't even know how good he is' By Jason Wolf The Buffalo News December 12, 2018 Rasmus Dahlin was frustrated. The Buffalo Sabres’ rookie defenseman was firing one-timers on the right flank of the power play, and unloaded four in one second-period stretch in what turned into a 4-3 overtime victory against the Los Angeles Kings on Tuesday night at KeyBank Center. At the time, the Sabres trailed by one goal. Three of Dahlin’s shots sailed wide of the net. The other was stopped by Kings goalie Calvin Petersen. Dahlin ended the power play by leaning on his stick and snapping it half. “When you can’t score, it’s pretty tough,” Dahlin said after practice Wednesday. “So, yeah. Bad stick, so I wanted a new one. So I broke it.” Dahlin was a beast for much of the game against the Kings, though he was burned on a goal by Matt Luff in the first minute of the second period. Dahlin had 13 shot attempts, eight of them on goal. He blocked three shots and had three giveaways in 28:34 of ice time, including just over 10 minutes on the power play. The Sabres scored on two of eight power-play opportunities, rallying from a two-goal, third-period deficit to end their five-game winless streak. Jack Eichel and Johan Larsson scored in the third period to tie the game and Jeff Skinner scored on the power play at 1:49 of overtime, giving the Sabres their first victory since Nov.

Buffalo Sabres Daily Press Clips March 1, 2019 Rasmus Dahlin learning to absorb big hits, make little plays for Sabres By Lance Lysowski The Buffalo News February 28, 2019 The preseason game was so long ago that Rasmus Dahlin cannot recall the opponent or the result, but the stern message delivered by teammates in the Buffalo Sabres' dressing room has resonated with him ever since. "I was upset," the 18-year-old rookie defenseman recalled. "I didn't play well and wanted to make the team. They said, 'Hey, you can't do this after every game.' " Not a practice or game has passed without a teachable moment for Dahlin, the NHL's top overall draft pick last June. During Thursday's practice in Harborcenter, both Jack Eichel and coach Phil Housley pulled him aside to offer advice. Dahlin's first season has taught him the value of a short memory, the importance of taking care of his body to withstand the grueling North American game and how to balance his fierce competitiveness with the need to make a simple play. There is still much for him to learn. That fact is powerfully illustrated even on the nights when his transcendent talent tantalizes and awes. Yet, through all the Sabres' struggles — they could be nine points back of the second wild-card when they host Pittsburgh Friday night — Dahlin's progress has not stalled. "I’m so happy," he beamed following practice Thursday. "I wouldn’t have expected this kind of season. So far it’s good, but we have to get some wins back and get back on track.

Buffalo Sabres Daily Press Clips November 23, 2018 Defenseman Lawrence Pilut hoping to help Sabres extend winning streak By Lance Lysowski The Buffalo News November 22, 2018 Lawrence Pilut had just stepped off the ice at Bill Gray's Iceplex, the practice rink for the Rochester Americans, when he was pulled aside by his coach, Chris Taylor. Pilut, a 22-year-old rookie defenseman, wasn't sure what to expect. Then, Taylor said that Pilut had been recalled by the Buffalo Sabres and he would need to be at KeyBank Center in time for Wednesday night's game against the Philadelphia Flyers. Pilut participated in warmups and headed to the press box, where he watched as a sold-out crowd cheered on a 5-2 victory, the Sabres' first seven-game win streak since 2006-07. Now, he's hoping for a chance to play in front of those fans, sooner rather than later. "Here is where I want to be," Pilut said after an informal skate Thanksgiving morning at KeyBank Center. "Here is where I want to play. I’m just happy right now to be up here. Now I just want to get into the action." It's unclear when he will get the opportunity. Pilut was recalled when Patrik Berglund was placed on injured reserve with an upper body injury, leaving the Sabres with 13 forwards and eight defensemen. Marco Scandella was scratched Wednesday night and remains day-to-day with a lower body injury suffered Monday in Pittsburgh, though he was one of 10 Sabres to participate in an informal skate Thanksgiving morning.

  • Evaluating Team-Level Pace of Play in Ice Hockey Using Spatio
Playing Fast Not Loose: Evaluating team-level pace of play in ice hockey using spatio-temporal possession data David Yu*, Christopher Boucher, Luke Bornn, Mehrsan Javan SPORTLOGiQ, Montreal, Quebec, Canada *Email: [email protected] 1. Introduction Pace of play is an important characteristic in ice hockey as well as other team-invasion sports. While in basketball pace has traditionally been defined as the number of possessions per 48 minutes, here we focus on pace and movement within a possession, leveraging the tremendous advancements in the capture of spatio-temporal data in team sports in recent years [1]. While much attention has been focused on speed and distance covered at the player level, spatio-temporal datasets also allow for more granular definitions of team-level pace of play such as measures of the speed between successive events or the speed of a possession as a whole. While ice hockey has always been one of the fastest-moving sports, rule and tactical changes in the past 15 years, such as the removal of the rule limiting 2-line passes and the stricter enforcement of obstruction/holding infractions, have placed further emphasis on pace. At the start of the 2016-17 NHL season, Paul Maurice, head coach of the Winnipeg Jets said: "This game is just so fast now... I've seen fast players and I've seen fast teams, it's the first time I thought we had a fast league. The speed, to me, is the one thing that’s changed more than anything. Our team, and the league as well, is as fast as I’ve ever seen it.” [2] Given the emphasis on pace in hockey in recent years, it is surprising that a recent study found a slight negative correlation between various metrics of forward attacking pace and offensive output such as shots and goals [3].

Buffalo Sabres Daily Press Clips January 14, 2018 Stamkos breaks late tie, Lightning beat Sabres 5-3 The Associated Press January 13, 2019 BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — Steven Stamkos broke a tie with 5:16 remaining in the NHL-leading Tampa Bay Lightning’s 5-3 victory over the Buffalo Sabres on Saturday night. Nikita Kucherov, Brayden Point, Ondrej Palat and Ryan Callahan also scored, and Louis Domingue stopped 30 shots. The Lightning have won 18 of their last 20. Sam Reinhart, Tage Thompson and Marco Scandella scored for Buffalo. Scandella gave Buffalo a 3-2 lead at 5:54 of the third, chipping home a pass from Jason Pominville from close range. Just 23 seconds later, the Lightning took advantage of a bad giveaway by Sabres defenseman Lawrence Pilut, and Stamkos found Kucherov for his 22nd goal of the season. Stamkos then put Tampa Bay ahead for good late, taking a drop pass from Kucherov and firing a hard shot to Ullmark’s blocker side. Sabres head to Western Canada looking to repeat last year's success By Mike Harrington The Buffalo News January 13, 2019 The Western Canada road trip was a rare bright spot for the Buffalo Sabres last season. They're desperately in need of similar success this year. The Sabres hit the skies for Edmonton Sunday, where they'll open their annual three-game trip Monday night in Rogers Place against the Oilers. The road has not been kind for Buffalo of late, as the Sabres are just 1-6-2 in their last nine games outside of KeyBank Center and have dropped four straight.
