  • A Great Season for Aurora's Rob Thomas
This page was exported from - The Auroran Export date: Thu Sep 30 17:47:02 2021 / +0000 GMT A great season for Aurora's Rob Thomas By Robert Belardi Before the season was halted due to COVID-19, Aurora native and centreman for the St. Louis Blues Robert Thomas was showing signs of improvement in his second season in the NHL. The Stanley Cup Champion recorded eight points in his last 10 games, including an 11-point month in February alone. His lone goal in that spell came against the Chicago Blackhawks at home, back on February 25 to bring the Blues within one goal in the second period. A cross-ice pass from David Perron found Thomas alone in front of goal and the 20-year-old roofed the puck short side. In total this year, Thomas has recorded 10 goals and 32 assists, along with a plus-minus rating of nine. He recorded nine goals and 24 assists in his rookie season last year. He's a quick skater, an agile forward with a nose for the puck and vision like a hawk down the ice. According to SB Nation writer Dan Buffa, written on March 6, Thomas belongs in St. Louis for a long time. In fact, Thomas was almost traded from St. Louis in exchange for Ryan O'Reilly to Buffalo on July 1, 2018. How different the roster would have been if he left. Thankfully, the Blues valued him more than that. The 20th overall draft pick in 2017 adds depth in the centre position that has O'Reilly and Brayden Schenn in the second and first line above him.

Buffalo Sabres Daily Press Clips December 13, 2018 Sabres' Jack Eichel: Rasmus Dahlin 'doesn't even know how good he is' By Jason Wolf The Buffalo News December 12, 2018 Rasmus Dahlin was frustrated. The Buffalo Sabres’ rookie defenseman was firing one-timers on the right flank of the power play, and unloaded four in one second-period stretch in what turned into a 4-3 overtime victory against the Los Angeles Kings on Tuesday night at KeyBank Center. At the time, the Sabres trailed by one goal. Three of Dahlin’s shots sailed wide of the net. The other was stopped by Kings goalie Calvin Petersen. Dahlin ended the power play by leaning on his stick and snapping it half. “When you can’t score, it’s pretty tough,” Dahlin said after practice Wednesday. “So, yeah. Bad stick, so I wanted a new one. So I broke it.” Dahlin was a beast for much of the game against the Kings, though he was burned on a goal by Matt Luff in the first minute of the second period. Dahlin had 13 shot attempts, eight of them on goal. He blocked three shots and had three giveaways in 28:34 of ice time, including just over 10 minutes on the power play. The Sabres scored on two of eight power-play opportunities, rallying from a two-goal, third-period deficit to end their five-game winless streak. Jack Eichel and Johan Larsson scored in the third period to tie the game and Jeff Skinner scored on the power play at 1:49 of overtime, giving the Sabres their first victory since Nov.

1 The Prague Spring It was much more than ice hockey, of course. It was a replay of a lost war. It started with an uprising, but it ended with a hockey game. Around 4:30 on the morning of August 21, 1968, a black Volga limousine, its bulbous, large headlights leading the way, sped from the Soviet embassy in Prague toward Czech Communist Party headquarters. Over the years, the black Volga limousine had become mythologized throughout Eastern Europe as the vehicle commonly involved in the abduction of citizens. In the early morning, thisCOPYRIGHTED particular Volga was trailed MATERIAL by a convoy of Soviet tanks. When the convoy arrived at Communist Party headquarters, operations forces sealed the premises and cut off all phone con- tact with the outside world. With that done, a group of Soviet troops armed with machine guns entered the offi ce of Alexander Dubcek, who just six months earlier had been selected as fi rst secretary of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia. CC01.indd01.indd 1 33/27/12/27/12 112:032:03 PPMM 2 Breakaway Although a Soviet colonel had initially entered the offi ce, where Dubcek was meeting with members of his cabinet, it was two plainclothes offi cers—one old, one young—sporting tweed jackets and open-neck shirts who initiated the dialogue as soldiers stood by the door, machine guns in tow. “Comrade Dubcek,” they respectfully addressed him. “You are to come with us straight away.” “Who are you, what do you want?” Dubcek replied. By the time Dubcek and his colleagues were placed under arrest and escorted by KGB agents to a barracks in the Carpathian Mountains in what is now Ukraine, Operation Danube had over- taken Czechoslovakia.
