Sydney Film Festival Returns to Dendy Newtown
MEDIA RELEASE SYDNEY FILM FESTIVAL RETURNS TO DENDY NEWTOWN The 63rd Sydney Film Festival announces its return to Dendy Cinemas Newtown, with 24 screenings taking place during the Festival from 8-19 June. The Festival has selected titles from Freak Me Out horror, cult and extreme arthouse cinema selections; Animation After Dark, animated shorts for adults; Sounds on Screen, films about important music and musicians; as well as American Epic Parts 1 and 2, and The American Epic Sessions, a epic journey into the roots of American music. “The Festival has programmed some fantastic new Australian films including the world premiere of Australian thriller Red Christmas; young Australian director Abe Forsythe’s new black comedy set in the aftermath of the Cronulla Riots Down Under; and Craig Boreham’s powerful queer drama, four years in the making, Teenage Kicks, with a brilliant line-up of young Australian talent. There are also some incredible films about defining musicians and much more to thrill and send shivers up your spine in the Festival’s Freak Me Out selection,” said Sydney Film Festival Director Nashen Moodley. “Dendy is, once again, excited to be hosting the Sydney Film Festival at both our Sydney locations,” said Claire Gandy, Dendy Cinemas National Film, Content and Programming Manager. “We are looking forward to welcoming festivalgoers to Dendy Newtown for a second year, with an interesting, thought-provoking and hugely entertaining selection of titles.” Local restaurant Bloodwood will offer a special menu for Festival audiences for the second time. The Dirty Dozen Brass Band
The Dirty Dozen Brass Band Celebrating over 40 years since their founding in 1977, New Orleans-based Dirty Dozen Brass Band has taken the traditional foundation of brass band music and incorporated it into a blend of genres including Bebop Jazz, Funk and R&B/Soul. This unique sound, described by the band as a ‘musical gumbo,’ has allowed the Dirty Dozen to tour across 5 continents and more than 30 countries, record 12 studio albums and collaborate with a range of artists from Modest Mouse to Widespread Panic to Norah Jones. Forty-plus years later, the Dirty Dozen Brass Band is a world famous music machine whose name is synonymous with genre- bending romps and high-octane performances. The History of the Dirty Dozen Brass Band In 1977, The Dirty Dozen Social and Pleasure Club in New Orleans began showcasing a traditional Crescent City brass band. It was a joining of two proud, but antiquated, traditions at the time: social and pleasure clubs dated back over a century to a time when black southerners could rarely afford life insurance, and the clubs would provide proper funeral arrangements. Brass bands, early predecessors of jazz as we know it, would often follow the funeral procession playing somber dirges, then once the family of the deceased was out of earshot, burst into jubilant dance tunes as casual onlookers danced in the streets. By the late '70s, few of either existed. The Dirty Dozen Social and Pleasure Club decided to assemble this group as a house band, and over the course of these early gigs, the seven-member ensemble adopted the venue's name: The Dirty Dozen Brass Band. -

AMST 403/AMST 903a/HIST 746a, Introduction to Public Humanities Ryan André Brasseaux [email protected] To make an appointment call: 203.432.0555 Davenport College Dean's Office What is the relationship between knowledge produced in the university and the circulation of ideas among a broader public, between academic expertise on the one hand and non-professionalized ways of knowing and thinking on the other? This seminar provides an introduction to various institutional relations and to the modes of inquiry, interpretation, and presentation by which practitioners in the humanities seek to invigorate the flow of information and ideas among a public more broadly conceived than the academy, its classrooms, and its exclusive readership of specialists. The course is organized around the six pillars (topical concentrations) structuring the public humanities program at Yale: museums and collections; space and place; history and the public; public art; documentary; digital humanities. In addition to core readings and discussions, the seminar includes presentations by practitioners who are currently engaged in different aspects of the public humanities. Participants also collaborate in developing an installation and virtual exhibit devoted to some aspect(s) of New Haven culture, politics, history, etc. COURSE REQUIREMENTS: Attendance and participation is required for all seminar discussions, practitioner’s colloquia, and film screenings. Grading is heavily dependent upon participation. Students will be also be evaluated on their ability to apply concepts and develop thoughtful questions derived from the readings into class discussion when practitioners visit. Reading Responses: A 500 word reading response is due Wednesday night before class at 10 PM.
