Henderson This thesis examines the impact of Maurice Maeterlinck’s ideas on modern artists. Maeterlinck's poetry, prose, and early plays explore inherently Symbolist issues, but a closer look at his works reveals a departure from the common conception of Symbolism. Most Symbolists adhered to correspondence theory, the idea that the external world within the reach of the senses consisted merely of symbols that reflected a higher, objective reality hidden from humans. Maeterlinck rarely mentioned symbols, instead claiming that quiet contemplation allowed him to gain intuitions of a subjective, truer reality. Maeterlinck’s use of ambiguity and suggestion to evoke personal intuitions appealed not only to nineteenth-century Symbolist artists like Édouard Vuillard, but also to artists in pre-World War I Paris, where a strong Symbolist current continued. Maeterlinck’s ideas also offered a parallel to the theories of Henri Bergson, embraced by the Puteaux Cubists Jean Metzinger and Albert Gleizes. -

As a celebration of work created on paper, the exhibition brings together a distinctive selection of drawings by fourteen artists, showcasing a variety of explorations in graphite, pastel, ink and mixed media practiced today. WILD AT HAND collates work diverse in medium, subject and mood. Each artist's stylized ode to figuration captures a sense of wild imagination, presenting self-reflexive contemplations of identity and lived experience, alongside thoughtful muses on the world around. WILD AT HAND exhibits intricate studies of environment and narrative in the delicate ink drawings of Lily Wong and the fantasy visions in graphite by June Culp and Lisa Signorini. Ryan Travis Christian’s graphite drawings satirize contemporary matters under the guise of vintage political cartoon styles, evoking a reflection on form and context similarly distinct in Aaron Pennington’s handcrafted representations of the virtual realm. These drawings, concentrated with fine detail, are contrasted with the expressive landscapes created from memory by Brian Lotti, the bold pastel portraits of hip-hop artists by Paul Verdell, and Alfie Kungu and Navot Miller’s abstracted compositions uniting block colors and silhouettes. -

We have also invited more than twenty artists currently living in France, particularly in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, to present works to display alongside those pieces or to produce new works. spine: 18.5mm theatre theory•practice •performance• of postindustrial space and the production theatre Street Street theatre In France, deindustrialising communities have called upon street theatre companies to convert derelict factories into cultural centres, reanimate urban space, commemorate industrial heritage, and even generate jobs. This book explores how contemporary French and the street theatre transforms industrial space into postindustrial space. This original, interdisciplinary analysis reveals how theatre production of participates in, and makes historical sense of, urban and economic change. How have companies converted spaces of manufacturing into spaces of theatrical production, and to what end? How do these companies, along with municipal governments postindustrial and developers, connect their work to the kind of work that occurred in these spaces in the past? How do those connections manifest in theatrical events, and how do such events give shape space and meaning to ongoing redevelopment projects? Bringing together theatre historiography, performance theory, critical geography, and political economy, this book develops an understanding of the relationship between theatre and Working memories redevelopment that goes beyond accusations of gentrification or celebrations of radical resistance. Ultimately, this volume argues that deindustrialisation and redevelopment depend on the logics of theatre and performance: theatrical events and performative acts make such transformations intelligible and navigable. Street theatre and the production of postindustrial space brings together some of the current theatre and performance scholarship’s fundamental concerns while demonstrating the significance of those concerns to an interdisciplinary readership. The book will be of interest to scholars and students of theatre and performance C studies, French and European cultural studies, critical geography, AL and memory studies. -

Construction of Crises: Climate, Terror and the Eiffel Tower A Master’s Thesis for the Degree Master of Arts (Two Years) in Visual Culture Sara Lundstedt Division of Art History and Visual Studies Department of Arts and Cultural Sciences Lund University KOVM12, Master Thesis, 30 credits Supervisor: Joacim Sprung Spring semester 2016 ABSTRACT This work investigates visualizations of two crises; terrorism and climate change. Focus lies on mediated images concerning Paris 2015, where terrorist attacks had an impact on the following UN climate change conference (COP21). The symbol of the Eiffel Tower was used to portrait both issues and will be studied through a semiotic analysis. Terrorism and climate change are argued to be interlinked, although the Tower functions as a powerful apparatus that mediates different meanings depending on which crisis it represents. Roland Barthes’ definition of myth is prolonged with a broader sense of ideology as defined by Louis Althusser. The ideology is mediated from the sovereign to the public through the apparatus that is further developed in the writings of Giorgio Agamben. Depictions of crises can accordingly be used by the sovereign in a state of exception with aim to control people’s behavior. When signifying universal values, the Tower includes some while it excludes others that do not belong to the Western core nations. Countries in the periphery who suffer from climate change are historical victims of Western imperialism. The Eiffel Tower hides the colonial history while representing democratic values that simultaneously are being limited by the French government. The study ends with an ecocritical analysis of public artworks made in relation to COP21.
