7 Hubei University of Technology Wuhan Hubei 430068 P.R.China

3.2. Income Tax Calculation

Most foreign citizens who work in China for longer than 90 days (or 183 days if your country has signed a double taxation treaty with China) are liable to pay Individual Income Tax (IIT).

Monthly Taxable Income Tax Rate Quick Band (monthly salary minus 4,800RMB) (%) Deduction 1 Income of 1,500RMB or less 3 0 2 1,500 - 4,500RMB 10 105 3 4,501 - 9,000RMB 20 555 4 9,001 - 35,000RMB 25 1,005 5 35,001 - 55,000RMB 30 2,755 6 55,001 - 80,000RMB 35 5,505 7 More than 80,000RMB 45 13,505

The forms of taxable income earned by foreign citizens working in China include among other sources income from wages and salaries.

The minimum tax threshold for foreign nationals working in China is normally 4,800RMB. Income up to this level is not taxed.

A progressive tax rate is applied to all income earned above the 4,800RMB threshold. See the table below to work out which tax band your Monthly Taxable Income places you inside.

Here is a guide to how it is calculated.

8 Hubei University of Technology Wuhan Hubei 430068 P.R.China

To calculate the exact amount of income tax you can expect to pay, and the final salary after tax, follow the steps:

 Work out your monthly taxable income. Monthly taxable income is total monthly salary minus 4,800RMB.  Find the relevant tax rate and “quick deduction” for your monthly taxable income.  To work out how much tax you are liable to pay, multiply the tax rate by your monthly taxable income, then subtract the “quick deduction.”  Your final salary after tax will be your monthly salary before tax minus individual income tax.

Example: Monthly salary before tax is 5600RMB.

 Monthly taxable income is 5600RMB - 4,800RMB = 800RMB.  With a monthly taxable income of 800RMB, you are taxed at a rate of 3%. Your “quick deduction” is 0RMB.  Work out your final tax liability: (0.03 x 800) - 0 = 24RMB. Your employer will deduct your 24RMB Individual Income Tax from your salary,  Your final salary after tax will be 5600RMB - 24RMB = 5576RMB.

The monthly salary will be paid on the 15th of each month. Technical circumstances beyond our control will sometimes cause delays of a few days with processing. We will always attempt the processing on the 15th, but we cannot guarantee you will receive it that day.

4.2. Term Schedule

The school year is based on 2 terms (semesters) Fall and Spring.

The Fall Term begins around September 1st, depending on the day of the week. It continues into January. It has 16 to 19 weeks depending on the date of Chinese New Year - "Spring Festival". It is based on the Lunar Calendar and changes annually.

The Spring Term generally begins approximately 2 weeks after the Lunar New Year. It changes every year, so be sure to check the calendar. Again the term is anywhere from 16 to 19 weeks. The school year usually ends around July 1st.

Most foreign teachers' contracts are through June so they need to complete the school year by July 1st.

The end of term on the calendar is not "cast in stone" and changes can be made at the last minute. Our suggestion is not to plan on teaching any critical information during the last week.

You will have one day off for each festival, and it depends on the D.I.R. if the missed classes should be made up or not.

International teachers also have New Years Day, which is also one day off. There may or may not be "make-up" days.

Holidays are subject to change according to the Government regulations. However the Spring & Fall terms have fixed holidays.

14 Hubei University of Technology Wuhan Hubei 430068 P.R.China

Fall Term:  Mid-Autumn Festival  National holiday (October 1st - 7th)  New Year's Day

The Mid-Autumn Festival is also based on the Lunar Calendar, usually taking place in September.

The National holiday, know as the Golden Week, is from October 1st through 7th. However, there are usually "make-up" days.

Spring Term:  Qingming Festival (Tomb Sweeping day)  International Labor Day (May 1st)  Dragon Boat festival

Since the Qingming Festival and the Dragon Boat Festival are based on the Lunar Calendar, the dates change each year.

Generally, the Qingming Festival is either in March or April, and the Dragon Boat Festival is usually in June.

Notes: "Make-Up" days - these are days that the teachers teach to make-up for days off, usually it means that the teachers teach either Saturday or Sunday or both for any days over 3.

For example: if the National Day is Monday through Sunday, teachers would teach the weekend before, both Saturday and Sunday because it is a “3-day” holiday. So while the teachers have 7 days with no classes, they will have to teach extra days so that the students only miss 3 days of classes, not 5. 15 Hubei University of Technology Wuhan Hubei 430068 P.R.China

4.3. Class Times

Classes are held 5 days a week, Monday through Friday. The school day is broken down in 90-minute teaching blocks with 4 blocks each day. Each block has 45 minutes of teaching followed by a 5-minute break and then another 45 minutes teaching. Some elective courses are usually arranged at night.

The morning schedule:  8:20-9:55 periods 1 & 2  10:15-11:50 periods 3 & 4

The afternoon schedule:  14:00-15:35 periods 5 & 6  15:55-17:30 periods 7 & 8

The evening schedule:  18:30-20:55 periods 9, 10 & 11

There is a lunch break from 11:50 to 14:00 - afternoon classes begin at 14:00. Many of the office staff and teachers are not available during this time. Everything in the campus (offices, library, all departments, on-site banks, post office, etc.) apart from the food stores, cafeterias and market shuts down.

If you miss a class for any particular reason your class MUST be rescheduled if you cannot find another teacher to cover for you.

If at all possible avoid making any changes to your schedule. This is only for dire emergency or unforeseen circumstances.

16 Hubei University of Technology Wuhan Hubei 430068 P.R.China

4.4. Students & Classes

Students are assigned an ID based on the year they arrive at the school, the program and major they are taking and the number of students in the class.

1210912101 simply indicate as follows:

Each student will have a different student number (the last two digits will NOT be the same), and it is that number that is used to collect all information on the student, especially grades.

4.5. Classrooms & Teaching Facilities

All classrooms have either blackboards or whiteboards, fixed or movable chairs and desks, and a ventilation system. Multimedia classrooms are equipped with a PC, a projector, a white screen, a microphone and speakers. Some of them are connected to the Internet. On teacher's desk it is a list of maintenance contacts.

Each class has a "monitor" who relays information in your class and to the local head teacher in charge of your class. If he/she cannot speak English well enough, you can ask for a change. 17 Hubei University of Technology Wuhan Hubei 430068 P.R.China

4.6. Curriculum & English Syllabus

The curriculum is set by the school according to the national guidelines. Courses in international joint programs are taught following the syllabus provided by the partner institution as it’s a prerequisite to continue studies abroad. (e.g. Sino-Canadian Program - course books provided by Lambton College, Canada).

The students are always together for a class except PE and elective classes. Elective courses are easily written and validated though they will not be taken as seriously as the main curriculum courses by the students.

It is important to know your students major and the type or course they attend as their level, requirements and outcomes are different.

4.7. Teaching Tips - Advice from Teachers

Introductory class. Let the students know you & the country you are come from.

Make the difference between being friendly & establishing a friendship.

The students are very shy, to make mistakes and “lose face”. They need to become comfortable with the teacher before they will strive to improve.

How to deal with “cheating” and “plagiarism”. Encourage independent & critical thinking.

18 Hubei University of Technology Wuhan Hubei 430068 P.R.China

5. Foreign Teacher’s Duties

5.1. Teacher Attendance

Teachers’ supervisors and head teachers assigned for your class, check all the classrooms everyday. Being late or absent without prior notice will incur a teaching infraction with an associated fine.

For details of teaching infraction and penalties please refer to the Teaching Regulations chapter.

Missed classes are only accepted due to illness, emergency or other approved reason:  illness or emergency (please inform Cherry Shan in D.I.R.),  going out of town for personal matters (approved by D.I.R.),  official meetings, rehearsals, programs (approved by D.I.R.).

You are strongly advised to avoid making any changes to your teaching schedule, as it can lead to issues resulting in your not being invited back for the next term.

If you need to change your classes due to an emergency or unpredicted circumstances, you need to go to the 10th floor of the Arts Tower building #B, to the administration office and fill out a change of schedule form. Also, please inform Cherry Shan in D.I.R. about the change so she can assist you in finding a free classroom.

Foreign teachers are allowed to cover for each other by teaching the lesson prepared, or teaching an equivalent lesson. 19 Hubei University of Technology Wuhan Hubei 430068 P.R.China

5.2. Teaching Plans

All teachers are required to submit to D.I.R. two 8-week lesson plan sheets each semester, to document what they’ll be teaching in each class. Additional copies for each class they teach should to be handed in at the end of the term together with their grades.

You must match the teaching plan to the term calendar to check for the number of weeks. Remember that the National Day in October - the Golden Week has no teaching but it is included as a teaching week (as there will be make up days).

At the end of the term there is one week for "review" for classes with written Exams. Those teaching oral English or English communication need to finish during the "review" week - you can give exams for one or two weeks, depending on your class size, meaning you should start a week early so to use both weeks.

Be sure that you know the total number of hours depending on the number of weeks in the term and the number of days you meet with the class to make out your plan.

5.3. Lesson Library

We are initiating a lesson library for the use of teachers looking for new ways to get students involved and interested in classes. Any teachers who have lessons that have proved successful and would like to share them with other teachers can put a folder together outlining your lesson and presentation materials which will be maintained in the D.I.R. for other teachers to borrow.

20 Hubei University of Technology Wuhan Hubei 430068 P.R.China

5.4. Student Grading

It is mandatory for all foreign teachers to submit a "portfolio" folder on the students' grades with the following information:  Course Title  Course Outline  Lesson Plans  Teaching Materials (Handouts, etc.)  Grades  Attendance Record Sheets  Final Exam Papers  Grading Sheets (with all the FINAL marks)  This folder should be turned in to D.I.R.

Being a state-owned university, it is required that all the records are to be kept in a professionally manner, as “reports” in the event an audit is being conducted by any of the state officials.

Note: In the grades folder student numbers MUST be lined up with the numbers in the grade folder or in the program. The grades will be entered for your students from the student number, so be sure that you leave any blank lines for student numbers that are not used.(e.g. when a student drops out or transfers)

Note: Oral exams can be of any length, but remember that you have to give every student a chance to speak. Experience suggests that you will lose about 1 minute between each student. If you cannot finish oral exams during the time allotted, you can find other time the students are free to finish.

21 Hubei University of Technology Wuhan Hubei 430068 P.R.China

The University requires two grades based upon a 100% scale. The first grade (100%) consists of workbooks, class work, quizzes, homework and tests scores. The second grade (100%) consists of attendance and daily participation scores.

Overall marks will be uploaded to the university computers by the individual department heads, automatically recomputing the course work/tests at 70% and the attendance/participation at 30% to be posted as the students final grade.

For the first grade - grading of workbooks, class work, quizzes, homework and tests, please use these percentages per course. 1. Final Exam: 40% 2. Midterm Exam: 20% 3. Workbook/ classwork & quizzes: 20% 4. Homework: 20%

For a 8-week course, where is no mid-term exam, please use the following grading system: 1. Final Exam: 40% 2. Workbook/ classwork & quizzes: 30% 3. Homework: 30%

For the second grade - grading of attendance and daily participation, you can use your own percentages.

1. Attendance: 50% - 1 point for each attended class (20 classes/ month = 20 points - 50%); 2. Participation: 50% - 1 point for each class participation (20 classes/ month = 20 points - 50%). 22 Hubei University of Technology Wuhan Hubei 430068 P.R.China

5.5. Classroom Attire

While it is appreciated that western teachers tend to dress much more relaxed than their Chinese counterparts, we advise you to refrain from wearing clothing that would reduce your teaching authority or inappropriately revealing clothing (flip-flops, low cut tops, bare shoulders, midriff). Casual jeans, sports-shoes (tennis or sneakers), polo or T shirts are accepted.

5.6. Teacher Evaluation

Every semester, all teachers will receive an evaluation on their performance while working at HBUT, consisting of :  Student feedback.  Assessment from class observation by the supervision team.  Teacher's performance and ranking in Teaching Competition  Teacher's participation in activities held or participated in  Any teaching infractions and their frequency.

The evaluation result will be a significant reference for contract renewal. Based on the evaluation, D.I.R. rewards top 5 teachers annually with extra bonus and honorary certificate.

5.7. End of the Term

You may leave once you have marked all your exams and handed in all the required documents (portfolio) to the school. A summary with your comments, feedback and suggestions about the students, particularly the weak ones, is suggested to be submitted to the school, with a copy to Cherry Shan in D.I.R.

23 Hubei University of Technology Wuhan Hubei 430068 P.R.China

6. Teaching Regulations

6.1. Respect the Law

You are required, by law, to have your passport on you whenever you leave the campus. If an officer asks you to present your identification and you do not have it with you they can and will fine you up to 2000 RMB. 8. Travel Information

8.1. Transportation

Wuhan has excellent mass transit services. Within walking distance there are a number of bus stops to service your travel needs. Taxi service is quite reasonable and if you carry a copy of where you want to go in Chinese as well as your return address, you can get anywhere. It will be a while before the new subway station is completed but that too will be close to the university.

There are 3 train stations (regular & high-speed tracks) and an international airport serving Wuhan, connecting the city with major cities in China or countries nearby.

If you need to do some shopping at Metro, Chicony, Carrefour and Walmart supermarkets, you can take a taxi or bus (you might have to change 2 lines or take the subway).

8.2. Travelling Around

When leaving Wuhan, it is mandatory to let the school know of your whereabouts and let them have your destination phone contact, or leave your mobile numbers with Cherry Shan so that if there is a family emergency, the school will be able to contact you. Also, please don’t forget to carry your passport with you.

We are also willing to help you arrange for tickets and hotels. Usually we can get better prices than you can find on the English sites. Please ask D.I.R. for assistance.
