  • The Gothic Trespass in the Life and Songwriting of Tennessee Blues Musician Ray Cashman
DESOLATION BLUES: THE GOTHIC TRESPASS IN THE LIFE AND SONGWRITING OF TENNESSEE BLUES MUSICIAN RAY CASHMAN Victor Bouvéron A thesis submitted to the faculty at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Folklore in the American Studies Department. Chapel Hill 2017 Approved by: William Ferris Glenn Hinson Crystal O’Leary-Davidson © 2017 Victor Bouvéron ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT Victor Bouvéron: Desolation blues: The Gothic trespass in the life and songwriting of Tennessee blues musician Ray Cashman (Under the direction of William Ferris) This thesis explores the pervading feeling of the Gothic in the life and songwriting of Tennessee blues musician Ray Cashman. I argue that Cashman emotionally responds to the South through the framework of the Gothic to assert his identity as a white southern working- class male. As a reader, writer and performer, he trespasses the lines of race and class. The ethnographic fieldwork I conducted in Tennessee, Georgia and North Carolina between 2015 and 2017 led me to reflect on the intriguing relationship between blues, southern Gothic literature and white working-class culture in the South. The songs written by Cashman often express a feeling of desolation, bleakness and decay, invoke a sense of nostalgia for a bygone time, or describe eerie landscapes and supernatural presences. Cashman also retells southern Gothic stories, like “Snake Feast,” inspired by Harry Crews’s A Feast of Snakes. iii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS This project started the day I met Bill Ferris in Lille, France, in 2013. Bill encouraged me to apply to UNC-Chapel Hill and introduced me to the field of folklore.

  • WIDESPREAD PANIC Street Dogs
WIDESPREAD PANIC Street Dogs Widespread Panic has been together going on 30 years. Formed by original members vocalist/guitarist John “JB” Bell, bassist Dave Schools and late guitarist Michael Houser, who lived together in a suburban house in Athens, GA, where they met as students not far from the University of Georgia campus, later to be joined by drummer Todd Nance. Shortly after that, the band’s line-up was solidified with the addition of percussionist Domingo “Sunny” Ortiz and keyboard player John “JoJo” Hermann. Formed in the tradition of the great southern guitar blues bands, with an improvisatory ethos, Widespread Panic continue to explore a sound all its own on the band’s 12th album, Street Dogs, their first studio effort since 2010’s Dirty Side Down. When asked to describe Street Dogs, Widespread Panic’s debut album on Vanguard Records, JB references the way Dr. John describes the music scene in New Orleans as “a gumbo of musical influences.” JB cites Van Morrison and George Carlin as influences while Dave (Grateful Dead/Miles Davis), Mike (Emerson Lake and Palmer), Todd (Steely Dan), Sunny (Tito Puente), JoJo (classically trained with a love for Professor Longhair) and Jimmy (Beatles/ Mahavishnu Orchestra) all bring something different to the table. “Above all, after nearly thirty years together, we are arguably each other’s greatest influence,” JB concludes. That eclectic approach includes the funky New Orleans flavor of “Sell Sell,” their cover of The Animals keyboardist Alan Price’s song from the soundtrack of the 1973 Malcolm McDowell film O Lucky Man!, and the playful nod to a missing feline in the gentle prog- rock of “Steven’s Cat,” written and recorded in a single day in the studio.

  • Widespread Panic
Reviews Compiled by MIKE GREENHAUS Widespread Panic WIDESPREAD PANIC Street Dogs VANGUARD/CONCORD Widespread Panic have finally ascended to the halls of Valhalla. Not just because there was a vacancy after the Allman Brothers broke up or because the surviving members of the Grateful Dead played their final shows together this past summer. No, these tireless road warriors got there legitimately with their insistence on evolution, reinvention, creative spontaneity and confronting everything, if not head on, at least metaphorically. On Street Dogs, their 12th studio album, they move lyrically through tragedy, discontent and spiritual unease while wrestling with their continued search for meaning. It is a rather weighty burden, but music has always been the medium for bigger things for this outfit—a way to access the spiritual mysteries that have confounded statesmen, dreamers and religious figures for centuries. While Panic may not come up with any concrete answers, they still know how to have fun and their search has provided a gripping musical ride through rock, blues, folk, unhinged psychedelia and ‘70s metal, even producing the kind of intuitive jazz that recalls Miles Davis. With Street Dogs, they’ve added more of a Latin accent, the kind that you might appreciate if you’ve listened to most of Santana’s catalog or at the very least, some of your father’s Tito Puente records. But it’s only a fluid starting point. On the entire focus before John Bell putting on a pair of buck antlers soul producer John Rhys brought “Angels Don’t Sing the Blues,” brings the tune back down to terra and chanting the third verse to the band.

Jamband expert Dean Budnick coined the term shortly thereafter to describe bands that perform long, improvised jams during their live shows. As these improvised shows have increased in popularity, they have become great spectacles, featuring light shows, filmed images, dancing, storytelling, and short plays. While the performance happening inside the arena deserves study, there is an equally interesting performance that takes place in parking lots before and after the shows.
