  • Eucharistic Theology Some Untapped Resources
Eucharistic theology Some untapped resources Thomas Finger Evanston, Illinois A eons ago, when I attended seminary in Massachusetts, Boston- area theological schools announced one of their first cooperative courses. How exciting, I thought, to study with Episcopalians, Catholics, Orthodox, and others! But then I learned that the subject was the Eucharist. How sad, I sighed, that they didn’t select something important! I didn’t take the course. Though I was not Mennonite then, my attitude was like many Mennonites’. I simply couldn’t imagine how important the Lord’s Supper was in some traditions. Years later, when I first took Catholic eucharistic theology seriously, I was shocked. All that Catholics have written on the subject might fill a library. In contrast, only one scholarly book on the Lord’s Supper in Anabaptism even exists.1 Mennonite attitudes Why have Mennonites reflected so little on the supper’s theology? Perhaps because, until recently, they paid little attention to the supper’s practice. In a sense, this is fitting. Theology normally arises from a desire to articulate and examine What Catholics have what is already occurring in the church’s life. written on But many Mennonite suppers offer little to eucharistic theology examine. • An Online Bibliography 1859-2011
Anabaptism and Mission An Online Bibliography 1859-2011 Edited by Chad Mullet Bauman and James R. Krabill (First Edition) Revised and Updated by Joseph F. Pfeiffer Introduction to the Updated, Online Edition (2011) The following online electronic resource represents my efforts over the last few years, as a student at Associated Mennonite Biblical Seminary (AMBS), with the sponsorship and partnership of the AMBS Mission Studies Center, directed by Walter W. Sawatsky, to update the first print edition of this work: Anabaptism and Mission: A Bibliography, 1859-2000 (Elkhart, IN: Mennonite Mission Network, 2002), compiled and edited through the tremendous and tireless efforts of Chad M. Bauman and James R. Krabill. Throughout the ongoing project thus far, the researching and compiling of sources was a humbling task, as the body of bibliographic materials on this subject never remains static. Not only has the project entailed updating entries of authors and sources listed in the first edition, as well new authors and scholars that have come on the scene in the first decade of the 21 st century, but several more sources even from the 20th century were found and added, as the development of electronic communication and information technology has made a great deal more information and data available, even since the time of the first publication. Furthermore, the author has continued the trend of conceiving of Anabaptist as inherently broader than the mainline Mennonite denominations. Thus, including more materials from other Anabaptists traditions, such as the often over-looked Apostolic Christian tradition (see entries for Sheetz and Donais), as well as the Brethren in Christ Church, allows for the vision of a broader and more contextually diversified vision of Anabaptism to emerge, such as in contexts of the Amazon basin and New Guinea Highlands.

  • Anarchism and Christianity
Anarchism and Christianity Marlow Christendom is an effort of the human race to go back to walking on all fours,to get rid of Christianity, to do it knavishly under the pretext that this is Christianity, claiming that this is Christianity perfected. In the Christianity of Christendom the cross has become something like a child’s hobby horse and trumpet.(Kierkegaard, 1968, p260) According to orthodox opinion, Christianity is synonymous with order, authority and state power. Even the most casual glance at the history of the Church reveals a reliable and system- atic pattern of political subservience; Imperialist in Rome, Monarchist in Renaissance Europe, Stalinist in Russia, and “Democratic” in America. Clearly, Christianity not only supports authori- ties, but presupposes that authorities exist. For Calvin, even the most brutal tyrant is better than the absence of civil authority, and Luther’s own endorsement of the bloody suppression of the peasant rebellion is well known. It would appear any reconciliation between Christianity and an- arche: the absence of authority and command, is out of the question. Expounding his own brand of Christian anarchy Leo Tolstoy complained of “a tacit but steadfast conspiracy of silence about all such efforts.” (Tolstoy,1984,p8) Nevertheless, from the very foundation of Christianity there has been an undercurrent of opposition to both secular and Church authority, much more than just incidental protests against given power abuse, but essentially anarchistic in character. So it is my purpose here to demonstrate the radical incompatibility between the ethics of state power and the ethics of the gospel. This is not an attempt to construct a sociology of Christianity, but simply an effort to isolate and analyse its socio-political dimensions and show that anarchism is the only “anti-political political position” in harmony with Christian thought.
