Although throughout this book, the identification of a Jewish "race" is associ ated with an anti-Semitic impulse, Jewish usage of "racial" terminology indi cates a certain ambivalence. See Harriet D. Maier and Chaim I. Waxman, 499-518 (New Brunswick: Transaction Books, 1983). Even today, many Jews use the term "the Jewish race" with pride. 2. The Haskalah, or Jewish Enlightenment, which began in late eighteenth century, Germany, was a response to the European Enlightenment. Middle-class Jews, anxious to distance themselves from the ghetto and religious prejudice, sought to modernize Jewish communities by exposing them to secular thought. The Maskilim (the proponents of the Haskalah) believed that Jews were persecuted because they differed from dominant communities in terms of culture, language, education, dress and manners. By modernizing their schools, learning the spo ken language of the country in which they lived, and adapting their manners to those of their neighbors, it was hoped that individual Jews would be treated like any other citizens. 3. Learned To Stop Worrying About Cultural Integration And Love The TV Trade Barrier Batia M. Zareh* ABSTRACT The E.U. Antitrust Case that opened on July 23, 2015 against Sky U.K. and six American studios—Disney, Fox, NBCUniversal, Paramount Pictures, Sony and Warner Brothers—has its structural roots in the Television Without Frontiers Directive, which was vigorously debated as a last-minute standoff that threatened to derail the conclusion of the GATT Uruguay Round of trade negotiations and is still considered to be the cornerstone of the European Union’s audiovisual policy. This Article examines the unique history of a Cultural Exception with respect to audiovisual works as applied in trade negotiations to Hollywood film and television productions, and argues that, rather than violating E.U. regulations, the decades- * Writer / Producer, Dialectic Arts, LLC. Armstrong helped change the sound and form of jazz. Traditionally the rugged and mordant cor¬ net had been the number one horn in jazz. In the late twenties, Louis changed to the fuller and brilliant sounding trumpet. The trumpet soon became the number one horn in jazz. He played his horn like no other musician before him. Armstrong's voicing and rhythm was almost flawless. He used a vocal technique for his horn and an instrumental technique for his singing. Armstrong's lung power and extraordinary lip muscles made him the King of Jazz. Louis Armstrong became the culture hero of Blacks during the twenties and thirties. Musicians and fans alike copied his speech, dress, and mannerisms. Arm¬ strong had as much impact on his culture as did White society on him. To understand the growth of Louis Armstrong there must be an understanding of the forces and events that shaped him and jazz during the twenties. Jazz, more than any other music, has been influenced by non-musical forces and events. Two of the main influences on jazz have been race and business. -
