The Marathon Show (hosted by Maniac #1817, Joe Taricani) was first broadcast in June 2010. It’s a one of a kind show that spot lights the marathon and marathon runners. Maniacs have found a safe haven with this great show. A few times a week Joe broadcast the show live online, the shows are then made available to download from iTunes (via Podcast). Each week Joe features a marathoner, and often does shout outs to marathoners from all over. Another great part of this show is the “runners chat”, in these shows Joe gets three marathoners together and does a round table discussionElaine about Green many great topics. So if you have already come across the show, please do. Check it out and tune in! http://www.themarathonshow.com http://www.marathonmaniacs.com 3 David Thierjung

Each month there will be a “Maniac poll”. This poll will be posted online. Please take a few moments to answer this poll. I will post the results in the next newsletter.

This month’s question: How long have you been running (regularly)?

Please vote online between now and April 7: http://www.marathonfreak.com/maniacpoll

Last month’s question: How often do you wear Maniac gear at a marathon/ultra?

Maniacs like to ear the gear! 58% of voters wear the Maniac gear every time they run a marathon or ultra. Thanks for voting!

A REMINDER IS SENT WITH THE MONTHLY E-FLASH AND SOME OF YOU ARE OVERDUE!! http://www.marathonmaniacs.com 20 RHETORICAL REVELATIONS AND W(RITES)… FROM THE RAMBUNCTIOUS REV

Hiya Prez! Or actually, “Dear Oh Inspirational One,”

Man, gentle Yee, you have no idea how far your impact reaches. You, “Hollywood” Warren, and Tony “TP” Phillippi created this whole Maniac running club, and now some theologian 3000 miles away is compelled to swim endless laps and ride bicycles that are stapled to a gym floor. That’s just weird.

Your ideas really do inspire us, my friend. And then maybe we inspire others…but then maybe they turn the tables and amaze us. Such is today’s story, Prez, for I have a friend we may not have to recruit, cajole, or even exaggerate to about how much fun it is to run miles 21 to 25, in order to get him to join us. He’s a rare kind of raw, pure, maniacal breed. Allow me to explain. 40 years ago, Chris was a medium-distance all-star county runner in his Cleveland suburban high school. He entered the Marine Corps, where he became a protected and oft-promoted member in his Company, as he won big Inter-Company Competition points with his running. Captains like that in a fellow. When he left the Corps, he became semi-normal, kept in reasonable shape, but dropped the running. He enjoyed a nice life until his late thirties, when almost every piece of internal personal hardware competed to post a “LEMON” sign on his forehead. His thyroid went. The kidneys sickened. At 41, we almost lost him entirely to a frightening heart attack. He lost half of his heart muscle.

That wake-up call got him back to the track. Jogging, then running, became steadfast routine. A year later, the doctor summarized Chris’ new EKG report this way: “Forget the other patients. You’re in better cardio-vascular condition than anyone on the office staff.”

Grateful, Chris began volunteering at the hospital. Meanwhile, he ran, and ran, for a decade, three or four 5- to 10- milers each week, occasional 13-milers, all at about a nine-minute pace. His 5’8” frame sculpted down to 158 pounds, and he held that pose into his fifties.

We talked about my marathons some, but I didn’t expect what followed. Captain Organ Failure enlisted me to accompany him in his first marathon attempt, appropriately the 2009 Marine Corps Marathon. I agreed, with both enthusiasm and cautions for him. He insisted I need not worry; we were out to finish, not set records. But the Jarhead’s steady training did go one run too many when, out by himself, he contracted a stress fracture in his leg on the Monday before the race. Naturally, (he’s a Marine), he would not to tell anyone, for fear we would stop him from running in the marathon.

So, run we did, happily for 18 miles. Then he then started to favor “a sore knee.” He dismissed the thought of stopping for aid. At mile 20, his kidney flared up, much more painfully than the leg. (He described it as someone “driving a knuckled fist into your back.” Now, “Sharing time is a happy time!,” so he demonstrated on my back… must be an “espirit de corps” sort of thing. Oo-rah.) But? Having made it to the bridge in time, we could continue, and so we did continue, employing something only resembling walking. These were six-point-two of the longest miles I can recall. Arm-in-arm we crossed at the finish, at which point Stiff-Upper-Lip-Man sidled away, and grimaced in near-tears of excruciating pain. His dear wife found him, threw her arms around him, and she, having been frightened all day about his heart, elicited his promise that this was a once and done deal. He quietly assented.

Here is where the story gets rather maniacal. For the next three years he kept the running routine, 15 years now after his heart attack. Then, in the middle of a recent Saturday night, Chris got out of bed, dressed quietly, woke his wife, and said simply, “You better take me to the hospital.” She dressed hurriedly, drove him the three miles to the hospital where he had been volunteering, and he stepped out of the car and walked into the Emergency Room. There he said simply, “I’m having chest pains.” (Chris advises me that “those words will get you some immediate attention.”) As almost everyone knew him and his half-a-heart status, nurses, doctors, even a few machines came running down the hall, attaching themselves all over his chest, and wheeling him away.

Thirty-six hours later, Chris, now resting in ICU recovery, was visited by the cardiologist, who entered and said, “Chris, people who come in here and register the numbers you registered Saturday night don’t walk in, they are wheeled in, and second… they don’t see Monday. That your heart made it through is as near to a miracle as we’ll ever admit to. It is your exercise routine that saved you. Now, we need to clear out the arteries like last time, but then you should be good to go.”

Well, almost. On Wednesday, the “Electrician Doctor” insisted that they insert a pacemaker onto whatever is left of his heart, to keep it beating within the proper pace range. In it went, and two weeks later, new numbers have been run. Pun intended. The cardiologist’s summary of these numbers?

“Chris, your running strengthened your heart, which is why you survived. Wait another three weeks. We’ll make sure the wires are all settled in nicely. Then, no sprinting; keep your heart rate in the assigned ranges. But run all you like. Run a marathon if you want to.” He actually said that. The happiest, most profound phone call came through this evening, Prez. Chris spoke of a new sense of how vivid every moment of life really is. “You know,” he said, “it used to bother me if someone cut me off driving, but now I figure he needs to get to where he’s going faster than I need to get where I’m going.” I could hear his smile.

His next words were quieter. He said he had, while praying for his grandchildren, experienced “a profound sense of the presence of God, in a visceral way, I never had before. The… the real peace that filled the room… exceeded any anxieties I’ve ever had.” We wondered together about this for a while.

And then he suggested we begin his road back with a local 10k, and then the Cleveland Half.

Prez, I don’t know when, or if, or where, and I do know we don’t have a star level for a maniac like Chris. But if he and I ever do run that second marathon, is it okay with you, Prez, if we loan him one of my yellow singlets for a day?
