TE AWAMUTU Another heartbreaking and tragic schoolboy death in Auckland. I feel that it is time for the parents of my generation who have teenage children to step up and take some responsibility for what is happening. We make the rules and laws and we shouldn’t be scared to uphold them to keep our children safe. I believe also that it does take a village to raise a child and we should not be afraid to intervene in the appropriate way. We have a community constable, youth aid officer, the College has an excellent truancy officer and principal. They are all approachable. I would hope that if any of my children were in an unsafe situation that someone from this community would step up. The risk of being called ‘interfering’ is a small price to pay. We are all the ‘parents’ in one way or another of all the kids we have in Te Awamutu. C. GISLER

The 63 page due diligence review of the Home of Cycling Trust proposal makes interesting reading. Waikato Regional Council commissioned Deloitte to conduct this review, which highlights some real concerns for Waipa District ratepayers. We have been led to believe that the velodrome development would bring many benefits to the region, and ratepayers. The following points have been taken form the report. Waipa ratepayers can be the judge as to the benefit they may gain as a ratepayer. They may also like to think about what has been promoted to us, the ratepayers, by project proponents in order to convince us of what a great deal we’re getting. Page 6 ... The experience of other velodromes, in both New Zealand and overseas, suggests that there is ongoing involvement from local government. Ratepayers should not be expecting the velodrome to make profits. For example in Southland, the local council has now entered into a 50/50 arrangement with the charitable trust that has been managing the facility. Page 17 ... No development contributions. It appears to be a reasonable exclusion, given the partnership with the Waipa District Council, to be confirmed by the Trust/Waipa District Council ... E what partnership? ELCOM Page 21 ...
