Mary Ann McDonald Carolan PhD ’89 (Italian) is Professor of Modern Languages & Literatures and founding Director of the Italian Studies program at Fairfield University. Prior to joining Fairfield in Vintage Italian race car 1997, she taught at Wesleyan and Yale. In Spring 2019 Professor Carolan held the Tiro a Segno Visiting Professorship in Italian American Studies at New York University.

At Fairfield Professor Carolan teaches a wide variety of courses on Italian culture, literature and film with a particular focus on the intersections between Italy and the United States. Her course entitled "" examines Italian genius in food, design, and , including the history of innovative at FIAT, Ferrari, , Maserati, Ducati, and . It also Architecture of Milan explores how the mechanical advances of the automobile figured prominently in the theory and proclamations of the Futurists, a group of Italian intellectuals and artists who celebrated the dynamism, power, and speed of the modern age in the early twentieth century.
