The Sewerage Board of – Amathus, SALA

The Sewerage Board of Limassol – Amathus is a public utility organisation established by the Council of Ministers Order 248/80 on 5 September 1980 in accordance with the provisions of the Sewerage Systems Law 1971 - 2007. The cornerstone of its mission is the construction, operation and maintenance of the central sewerage system for the collection and treat- ment of municipal wastewater of the Greater Limassol area, as well as the construction of the basic infrastructure of the storm water drainage system. The service area includes the area of Limassol Municipality as well as the area of five sur- rounding municipalities and seven community Boards with more than 200,000 population.

The existing knowhow of the Sewerage Board of SBLA consists mainly of experience of more than 20 years in the field of planning, project financing, development, operation and maintenance of sewerage network and secondary and tertiary Waste Water Treatment Plant (WWTP). Treated wastewater is reused for unrestricted irrigation since 1995, whereas the treated sludge is being reused mainly in agriculture. In addition, the treated effluent is being reused for irrigation. The SBLA is the owner and competent authority for the implementation of the system and coordinates various parties and authorities involved in the development of its projects such as the Ministry of Interior, the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Agriculture, the Water Development Department, the Department of Environment, Local Authorities, Communities and Improvement Boards, the Land and Survey Department etc.

The Board of Management consists of 37 members as follows: the Mayors of Limassol, Yermasoyia, Mesa Yitonia, Ayios Atha- nasios, , all the Councillors of the Municipality of Limassol (26 members) and the representative of the District Office of Limassol. The Presidents of the Community Boards of Pyrgos, Moni, , Pano Polemidia and Ayios Tychonas.

At the moment the Sewerage Board of Limassol – Amathus employs 59 persons with Mr. Andreas Christou, the Mayor of Limassol, as its Chairman and Mr. Iacovos Papaiacovou as its General Manager.

Since 1992 when the staged construction of the sewerage and drainage system began and up until 2005, over 137 million euro have been invested in the project and the works covered about 50% of the SBLA area. Currently, Phase B2 is being implemented and construction works continue to be carried out with the objective of completing the project up to 2013. The overall project cost for Phase B2 is expected to exceed 400 million euro.

The Board puts a great deal of effort to best serve its customers by offering a wide range of e-services. Such services include amongst others, online payments, email invoices and online applications. It also constantly seeks opportunities to further develop and implement new services. Currently the SBL is participating in several EU funded projects such as the ‘Develop- ment and Operation of an Integrated, Energy-Autonomous Model System of Membranes for Advance Wastewater Treat- ment in ’; NIREAS and NOVIWAM. In the past it has participated to the project SEWERINSPECT.
