Introduction There are approximately 700 identified species of carnivorous plants placed in 15 genera of nine families of dicotyledonous plants (Albert et al. 1992; Ellison & Gotellli 2001; Fleischmann 2012; Rice 2006) (Table 1). In India, a total of five genera of carnivorous plants are reported with 44 species; viz. Utricularia (38 species), Drosera (3), Nepenthes (1), Pinguicula (1), and Aldrovanda (1) (Santapau & Henry 1976; Anonymous 1988; Singh & Sanjappa 2011; Zaman et al. 2011; Kamble et al. 2012). Inter- estingly, northeastern India is the home of all five insectivorous genera, namely Nepenthes (com- monly known as tropical pitcher plant), Drosera (sundew), Utricularia (bladderwort), Aldrovanda (waterwheel plant), and Pinguicula (butterwort) with a total of 21 species. The area also hosts the “ancestral false carnivorous” plant Plumbago zelayanica, often known as murderous plant. Climate Lowland to mid-altitude areas are characterized by subtropical climate (Table 2) with maximum temperatures and maximum precipitation (monsoon) in summer, i.e., May to September (in some places the highest temperatures are reached already in April), and average temperatures usually not dropping below 0°C in winter. -

Kyes, PhD Participating Investigators February 2007 Executive summary This study was carried out in the Kangchenjunga Conservation Area (KCA), Eastern Nepal from Feb - Nov 2007. We used the Snow Leopard Information Management System, SLIMS (second order survey technique) to determine the relative abundance of snow leopard in the upper part of KCA. Altogether, 36 transects (total length of 15.21 km) were laid down in the major three blocks of KCA. 104 Signs (77 scrapes, 20 feces, 2 Scent mark, 3 Pugmarks and 2 hairs) were recorded. Fixed-point count method was applied for blue sheep from appropriate vantage points. We counted total individual in each herd using 8×42 binocular and 15-60× spotting scope. A total of 43 herds and 1102 individuals were observed in the area. The standard SLIMS questionnaire was conducted to find out relevant information on livestock depredation patterns. Out of 35 households surveyed in KCA, 48% of herders lost livestock due to snow leopards. A total of 21 animals were reportedly lost due to snow leopards from August to September 2007. INTRODUCTION The Snow Leopard (Uncia uncia) is an endangered species lives in the mountains of the Central Asia and the Himalayas, often in very high altitudes with extremely low winter temperatures and far away from sheltering forests (Nowel and Jackson, 1996). In Nepal it inhabits the main Himalayan chain along the Tibetan border (HMG Nepal, 2005). -

Sustainable Tourism in the Indian Himalayan Region : NITI Aayog drishtiias.com/printpdf/sustainable-tourism-in-the-indian-himalayan-region-niti-aayog Preface Mountains cover around 27% of the Earth’s land surface and contribute to the sustenance and wellbeing of 720 million people living in the mountains and billions more living downstream. Yet mountains are under threat from climate change, land degradation, overexploitation, and natural disasters, with potentially far-reaching and devastating consequences, both for mountain communities and downstream populations. The challenge is to identify new and sustainable opportunities that can bring benefits to both highland and lowland communities and help to eradicate poverty without contributing to the degradation of fragile mountain ecosystems (FAO, 2018). With a similar set of threats in the Indian Himalayan Region (IHR) and its adjoining landscapes, existing non-climatic issues are becoming complex as multi-faceted problems such as human wildlife conflicts, water insecurity due to drying of natural springs, land degradation and resultant socio-demographic changes (out- migration), and environmental problems such as solid waste and air pollution are pertinent. As climate change has affected the Himalayan region, warning signals in the form of shrinking glaciers, increasing temperatures, water scarcity, changing monsoonal patterns, and frequency of severe disasters are obvious. The IHR extends from the Indus River in the west to the Brahmaputra River in the east. The mountain ranges and river basins share trans-boundary connectedness. Six countries in the Hindu Kush Himalayan region share borders with India. For the IHR, ‘Tourism’ has existed for a very long time. Apart from pilgrimage tourism, “modern” tourism in the IHR region, which is represented by mass tourism, largely limited to sightseeing and visiting major tourism hubs, is also putting severe stress on the ecology and ecosystem services of the Himalaya as well as on local social structures. -

Though VrWF has been active in Nepal since 1967. there has been a gap in the public's knowledge of \V\VF' s \vorks. These reports help bridge that gap by offering the conscn'ation community access to works funded andior executed by \V\VF. The report series attests to the din:rsity and complexity of the conservation challenges facing Nepal. Some reports feature scientific research that will enable ecologically sound conservation management of protected areas and endangered species. Other reports represent research in areas that are relatively less known or studied (e.g. the proposed Kanchenjunga Conservation Area or the impact of pesticides in Nepal). The \Vildlands Studies Program. San Francisco State University, has conducted ecological surveys of vegetation and \vildlife in eastern Nepal for the past 5 years. These reports detail the community structure of forests and alpine zones in the Kanchenjunga area. Tree, wildlife. and bird species observed are given with altitudinal and habitat distribution. The report augments \VWF's feasibility study of the proposed Kanchenjunga Conservation Area by providing up-to-date data on this unique and under-studied ecosystem. Endowed with exceptionally rich flora and fauna, the region is truly a conservation jewel. Therefore, to learn that 211 new species have been discovered in the Eastern Himalayas between 2009 and 2014 further enhances that reputation. The Royal Government of Bhutan is truly delighted to know that at least 15 of the new species were found in Bhutan alone. This is indeed an indication of how much there is still to be explored and found from our incredible region. -

April - June, 2020 Eastern Himalaya Quarterly newsletter of the ATREE Eastern Himalaya / Northeast Regional Office VOLUME 6, ISSUE 2 Emerging zoonotic disease risks in Darjeeling Sikkim Himalaya is a case in point, Darjeeling-Sikkim Himalaya where we propose to investigate the emergence of zoonotic diseases. This landscape is part of the Himalaya Biodiversity Hotspot, which is predominantly agrarian, rural and transboundary. The region merits attention, because like other mountain areas, have limited medical facilities and infrastructure, crowded urban spaces and rising rural population due to returning migrants. Our ongoing work shows that the region is very rich in mammal diversity with species-rich Orders like Chiroptera, Rodentia and Carnivora. Reports show that zoonotic diseases like Scrub typhus, Nipah, Encephalitis, Dengue, Rabies emerged and re-emerged in the region. This is a reminder that these seemingly pristine regions Rhinolopus affinis at a roosting site in Srikhola, Darjeeling by should not be undermined in their role in zoonotic Aita Hang Subba threats. Kangchenjunga Transboundary Conservation and Development Initiative in the Hindu Kush Himalayas Prepared by Pratikshya Kandel and Nakul Chettri Type of TBPA: A cluster of isolated and transboundary protected areas. Introduction The proposed Kangchenjunga Landscape (KL hereafter), a transboundary mountainous area with highly diverse topography and rugged terrain is one of the most important transboundary landscapes in the eastern Himalayas. It spreads over diverse ecological zones in eastern Nepal, Sikkim and Darjeeling Himalayas of India, and western Bhutan to encompass the southern stretch of Mount Kangchenjunga region. On the northern side, a small part of the northern slope extends into the Tibetan Autonomous Region of People’s Republic of China. At the heart of this landscape, lies the Mount Kangchenjunga (8,586m), the world’s third highest mountain peak that sustains many of the vital Himalayan rivers and crucial watersheds. The KL covers an area of 14,432 Sq. Km extending from 26º44′39′′, 28º7′32′′ North latitude and 87º 39′14′′, 89 º 30′39′′ East longitudes. There are 15 designated Protected Areas (PAs) and six proposed corridors within the southern part of the KL, connecting nine of the 15 PAs. Six among 15 PAs are transboundary in nature: the Kangchenjunga Conservation Area (KCA) (Nepal- India), Khangchendzonga Biosphere Reserve (KBR) (India-Nepal), Barsey Rhododendron Sanctuary (BRS) (India-Nepal), Singhalila National Park (SNP) (India-Nepal), Pangolakha Wildlife Sanctuary (PWS) (India-China-Bhutan), and Toorsa Strict Nature Reserve (TSNR) (Bhutan-India). The designated PAs covers a total of 10,348 km2 that accounts 72% of the landscape area and six proposed conservation corridors covering additional 11% of the landscape thereby making the landscape important biodiversity repository. -

MT EVEREST 8848m 1st Australian ascent 1984 Tim Macartney-Snape & Greg Mortimer The fi rst Australian ascent of Everest in 1984 by Tim Macartney-Snape and Greg Mortimer, by a new route (White Limbo) up the North Face central couloir, without supplementary oxygen. A climb that is still unrepeated to this day. 2. K2 8611m 1st Australian ascent 1990 Greg Child, and Greg Mortimer Greg Child and Greg Mortimer climbed K2 via the North Ridge, a rarely climbed route, without supplementary oxygen. 3. KANGCHENJUNGA 8598m 1st Australian ascent 1987 Michael Groom & John Coulton Michael Groom after an epic ascent of Kangchenjunga in 1987, which resulted in the loss of all his toes, went on over the next decade to climb the rest of the six highest peaks in the world, without oxygen. 4. LHOTSE 8501m 1st Australian to climb over 8000m 1982 Fred From Lhotse is located at the border of Tibet and Khumbu and is connected to Everest via the South Col. The South Face is one of the steepest in the world, rising 3 kilometres in 2.3 kilometres. 5. MAKALU 8481m High Point reached 7600m 1983 Fred From & Mark Moorhead The fi fth highest mountain in the world, Makalu, is an isolated mountain and is located on the border of Nepal and China.
