Dedicated to breaking the intergenerational cycle of low literacy in America, in 1989 Mrs. Bush founded the Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy, a charitable organization focused on programs that enable parents and their children to learn together. Two years later, she played an integral role in the passage of the National Literacy Act of 1991, our country’s first congressional bill enacted to coordinate and increase access to adult literacy programs. Because of her efforts, millions of adults have had a second chance to earn their high school diplomas and/or learn to read, write, and speak English. She truly earned the title “First Lady of Literacy.” Mrs. Bush’s work in promoting and advancing the literacy cause did not end when she left the White House. She did so for nearly 30 years, both nationally and in her hometown through the Barbara Bush Houston Literacy Foundation. She never stopped caring and giving. As a role model for leading a life of service to others and a champion of the literacy cause, Barbara Bush will forever be our inspiration for helping people reach their fullest potential in life through the power of literacy. Mrs. Bush encouraged all of us to get involved in something bigger than ourselves, in the big ideas of our time, and live a life of purpose and meaning. Former First Lady Barbara Bush designed the event to shine the light on her cause of literacy and demonstrate to everyone that reading is joyful and a foundational skill for living the American Dream. A Celebration of Reading is indisputably one of Houston’s top charitable events and is hosted by one of the most beloved families of our nation. VIP guests begin their special evening with a reception during which they mix and mingle with members of the Bush family and the line-up of bestselling authors, while enjoying cocktails and hors d’oeurves. All guests then proceed to the theater to enjoy the program, a professional production in which prominent authors artfully share their stories and entertainers delight guests with their talents. As hosts for the evening, the Bush family enlightens guests with their humor, while at the same time creating a sense of intimacy and connectedness through their love for one another and passion for the literacy cause. Following the program, guests enjoy a seated dinner and more time to converse before going home with a book written by one of the authors. Proceeds from A Celebration of Readingc benefit local literacy programs through the Barbara Bush Houston Literacy Foundation and national efforts through the Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy. Cipollone Counsel to the President The White House Washington, D.C. 20502 Dear Mr. Cipollone: In accordance with the requirements of the Presidential Records Act (PRA), as amended, 44 U.S.C. §§2201-2209, this letter constitutes a formal notice from the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) to the incumbent President of our intent to open George W. Bush Presidential records in response to the systematic processing project and Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests listed in Attachment A. This material, consisting of 46,940 pages, 21,657 assets and 6 video clips, has been reviewed for the six PRA Presidential restrictive categories, including confidential communications requesting or submitting advice (P5) and material related to appointments to federal office (P2), as they were eased by President George W. Bush on November 15, 2010. These records were also reviewed for all applicable FOIA exemptions. As a result of this review, 6,246 pages and 4,892 assets in whole and 844 pages and 530 assets in part have been restricted. Therefore, NARA is proposing to open the remaining 39,850 pages, 16,235 assets and 6 video clips that do not require closure under 44 U.S.C. § 2204. A copy of any records proposed for release under this notice will be provided to you upon your request. We are also concurrently informing former President George W. Bush’s representative, Freddy Ford, of our intent to release these records. Pursuant to 44 U.S.C. 2208(a), NARA will release the records 60 working days from the date of this letter, which is October 23, 2019, unless the former or incumbent President requests a one-time extension of an additional 30 working days or asserts a constitutionally based privilege, in accordance with 44 U.S.C.

Welcome to the State Department. Welcome to the beautiful Benjamin Franklin Room. We are so delighted to be the co-host of the Private Sector Summit on Public Diplomacy with our great partners, the Public Relations Coalition, PR Coalition. We have had already a morning of tremendous panels, speakers and we have already, I think, planted several seeds that will bear fruit. Our desire, as we mentioned this morning, is to ensure that public diplomacy cannot be seen as the work of government alone. And with the help of all of our partners in this room, I truly believe we're going to leave a lasting legacy of these kinds of partnerships because we have such a common goal in promoting mutual understanding of Americans and American values with people all around the world. There are a few people that I would like to thank.   • White House “Tails”
    White House “Tails” Pets of the First Families he nine papier-mâché figures representing the beloved pets of some our nation’s First Families, T were first used by First Lady Laura Bush in her 2002 White House Christmas entitled All Creatures Great and Small. Florists and calligraphers, part of the regular White House staff, were called upon to create over 20 of the special ornaments that represented pets ranging from the ordinary to very extraordinary. Most First Families owned pets when they took up residence in the Executive Mansion, and occasionally more creatures great and small were acquired during each President’s administration. Many pets were gifts to the First Families from other countries. Some gifts, like the Russian dog, Pushinka, lived in the White House. Other more exotic ones were given to the National Zoo. Goats, cows, sheep, and horses that lived at the White House were working animals. Other animals just wandered onto to lawn of the White House or into the mansion itself and were either “adopted” or evicted by members of the First Families. Regardless of how the pets arrived or how long they remained with the Presidential families, each of their stories is fun and historic. The National First Ladies’ Library is proud to share with our guests the opportunity to see nine of the pet ornaments. We are aware of the distinct honor of hosting our “White House guests” and sincerely thank President George W. Bush for this rare loan of historic White House artifacts.
