Abstract The collection contains two large series of manuscript materials from Olive White Garvey and Ray Hugh Garvey, a married couple, living in Kansas, who were very successful entrepreneurs in the farming, grain storage, petroleum, building, and investment businesses, and who were very engaged in civic, social, political, educational, and philanthropic activities throughout their adult lives. Identification Manuscript collection number 809 (identified as: MC 809). Notes This finding aid describes materials held by the Kansas Historical Society. BIOGRAPHIES Olive White Garvey Born in Arkansas City, Kansas on July 15, 1893, the fourth of five children of Oliver Holmes White and Caroline Hill White. Died in 1993 at the age of 99. Garvey was a business executive, educator, author, playwright, poet, civic leader, and philanthropist. She attended public schools in Topeka, Kansas, and graduated from Washburn College with an A.B. degree in 1914. She taught high school English in Augusta, Kansas, for two years after her graduation before marrying Ray Hugh Garvey on July 8, 1916 and settling in Colby, Kansas. The couple had 4 children (Ruth Caroline, Willard White, James Sutherland, and Olivia Rae). Garvey was Chairman and Director of Garvey, Inc., Garvey Center, Inc. and SRI, Inc.; President & Trustee of Garvey Foundation and Family Charities Foundation; and Trustee of 34 trusts. She was Director & Trustee of Friends University [Chairman 1974 & Honorary Chairman 1975-1984]; of the Herbert Hoover Presidential Library Association; Kansas 4-H Foundation; Music Theatre, Wichita Festival Committee; and Kansas Coliseum Board. She was a member of the National Board of Governors of the Institute of Logopedics; International Institute of Education; Republican Women; and the Wichita Metropolitan Council. She received awards from Phi Kappa Phi; Nonoso; Woman of the Year Award; and the Delta Gamma Cable Award. She was awarded an honorary doctorate in Public Services from Friends University, honorary doctorate of Letters from Oklahoma Christian College, and honorary doctorates from both Washburn University and Wilson College. She received the Salesman of the Year Award; Brotherhood Award NCCJ; Martin Palmer Humanitarian Award; Distinguished Service
