First, I am grateful to the University of Tromsø that opened my path to an international academic milieu by admitting me to the Indigenous Master Programme where I met my classmates from all over the world, Saami professors with personal experience in the indigenous self-determination movement, and other researchers on indigenous issues. Moreover, the Centre for Sámi Studies played an active role in my educational process, by organising seminars (at Skibotn) and conferences (the Forum for Development Cooperation with Indigenous Studies), trips to Finnmark (Karasjok, Kautokeino, Alta) and to Kåfjord (Manndalen) and finally, funding my research project. My gratitude goes as well to the Norwegian State Educational Loan Fund (Lånekassen) and the Centre for Environment and Development (SEMUT) for their financial support that made this research possible. Towards a New Understanding of Sámi Popular Music and Identity in the New Millennium
ABSTRACT Title Thesis: REWRITING THE SOUNDSCAPE: TOWARDS A NEW UNDERSTANDING OF SÁMI POPULAR MUSIC AND IDENTITY IN THE NEW MILLENNIUM Rebekah E. Moore, Master of Arts, 2004 Thesis Directed By: Jonathan Dueck, Lecturer, School of Music The purpose of this thesis is to illuminate the shifting focus of Sámi musicians and audiences in expressing identity through an analysis of Sámi history and original fieldwork on current Sámi popular music. In the new millennium musicians increasingly explore musics of many cultures, and identify the Sámi vocal tradition of joik as just one aspect of their broad musical influences. This does not connote an abandonment of traditional Sámi music, however , nor does it signal a lack of interest in as serting a dis tinctively Sámi identity. In stead, it reflects a desire of musicians and audience s to explore , through music, the globalized, multicultural worlds in which they live and the increasing interest in self -determination and in the expression of a more internal ized , personal sense of identity. The study is based on published literature, interviews with experts in music, cultural studies, and radio programming, and attendance of popular music performance. For the Sámi, the indigenous people of the Sápmi region, which spans the northernmost parts of Norway, Sweden, Finland and Russia, storytelling through song has been a part of their culture for centuries. Referred to as joik, this melodic chanting is used to describe everything from emotions and landscapes to animals and people. “It’s a lot more than music,” explains Frode Fjellheim, a Norwegian musician, composer and joiker, as well as a professor at Nord University in Levanger, not far from Trondheim, where he lives. “It’s a way of communicating, a way of expressing feelings often combined with storytelling. Challenging national narratives of cultural homogeneity and egalitarianism, this research identifies aspects of this publicly-funded arts education system that function to create, or perpetuate inequality for Sámi learners. Employing narrative and joik as analysis approaches, we reflect upon these processes of exclusion in order to envision new possibilities for this national arts education system to not only accommodate Sámi learners, but to learn from and together with Indigenous arts,pedagogies, onto- epistemologies and ways of being to enhance equality for all.
