The greatest news to share with you all is the introduction of Confraternity’s first ever girls’ championship. Iona is very proud to be the first Carnival to welcome both female and male teams and our Confraternity family is now enriched. This new era of Confraternity is embraced by our whole community and we look forward to continuing to share the many developments with you. We sincerely hope that everyone attending Confro shares in the deepest aspects of our Iona culture while enjoying the carnival. We are a school community served by the Oblates of Mary Immaculate, where daring, passion, loyalty and community are key values that drive us. We are known for being fiercely competitive and humbly respectful of our visitors and opponents. Our war-cry makes use of the Maori words KIA KAHA which translates as “Be Strong” or “Forever Strong” and you will see this reflected around the grounds. This value has been with the College since 1985 when Brett Rangirra (Taranaki) forged our war cry into existence and we hope it assists you all in your Confro 2020 journey. We believe that you all have God-given talents and strengths and we are sincerely looking forward to seeing, hearing and feeling those in just a few short weeks. We can’t wait to welcome you all. KIA KAHA and God Bless. General information from Peter Holmes, Convenor The 2020 Confraternity Carnival will hopefully create many fond memories for those involved. This year does bring a ‘first’ to the 41st event as we welcome eight Open Girls’ teams to this year’s competition. They are Mt Maria College (Brisbane), Shalom College (Bundaberg), St Peter Claver College (Brisbane), St Thomas More College (Brisbane), Marymount College (Gold Coast), The Cathedral College (Rockhampton), St Joseph’s College (Toowoomba) and Clairvaux Mackillop College (Brisbane). We hope there will be great support for these players and that this marks the start of a wonderful addition to the Confraternity Carnival moving forward. There will be much more news about this exciting addition to the Carnival in following newsletters. Mass and Opening Ceremony The Opening Liturgy and Ceremony are a core element of the Carnival and we are preparing a liturgy that we hope is engaging, relevant and spirit filled. We hope that everyone remains open to seeing, hearing and feeling just how much God loves you all and that the spirit of the Carnival is given the best possible beginning. May God Bless all of your preparations. Open Girls’ News The girls will play all their pool games on the Monday and play their finals on theTuesday - refer to event timeline for full details. Coach and Manager Meeting The Coach and Manager meeting will begin in the Green Room (next to the Lecture Theatre) and then relocate to the Lecture Theatre itself. This will begin straight after Mass and the Opening Ceremony in Oblate Hall, at approximately 6:30pm (refreshments and finger food will be supplied). Captain’s Meeting A Team Captain’s meeting will take place in the Lecture Theatre at 4:30pm, before the Opening Mass. Captains are reminded to bring a team jersey with them for blessing at the Mass. Annual General Meeting The AGM will take place on the Wednesday morning at Iona College, in the Lecture Theatre (morning tea will be supplied). More on this in the next newsletter. Fellowship Fund Iona College would like to thank the many local sponsors who have chosen to support the Confraternity Carnival with a pledge to assist schools who have been impacted by drought, fires and more recently, flooding, to ensure your participation in the 2020 carnival. The fund currently sits at $10,000 and is for any carnival expenses you may need assistance to cover (i.e. accommodation, travel costs or meals). If you are interested in accessing this fund, please make contact with Mark Bunting of QISSRL on [email protected] for further details. Last Minute Accommodation Please let us know if you still have any accommodation issues at present. We have been approached by Accor Hotels (in town) and Manly Hotel (local) with options if still required. Carnival pool allocations and divisions Please refer to the pool allocation sheet below for all teams. This gives an indication of pools and divisions at present. Obviously, a complete draw will be finalised in the weeks to come and a competition draw will be available closer to Confro kick off. Those teams who are able to bring tents please do, but rest assured Iona will be sourcing tents to ensure that shade cover will be plentiful. Manly Pool for recovery sessions Iona College pool will not be available for use during the carnival but the owners of Manly Pool, located at 1 Fairlead Crescent, Manly (only 10 minutes from Iona College), have generously offered several lanes in their complex for teams to use for recovery sessions during the carnival. We thank them for their generosity. Lunch pack options Each year the providing of lunch packs is an option to colleges. Attached is a flyer that gives you the options for team lunches and an order form if you wish to get that piece of organisation out of the way early (this would also help us with planning for the week). You would have the opportunity to alter your packs if you so desire, to include extra options for either players or coaching staff. We have kept the main lunch pack to $10 as per previous carnivals. Food vendors Iona College have a wide variety of food options available throughout the five days of the Carnival. These include permanent canteens on both sides of the road, the College tuckshop (underneath the Lecture Theatre - see menu options attached), as well as several coffee and cake options, gluten free options and drink stalls. A full list of food options will be available closer to the Carnival. Laundering of team kits Iona College has access to a local laundry service that is able to handle the laundering of team kits as has been the case in the past. The cost for this service is once again $50 per kit wash (a kit comprises all team jerseys, playing shorts and socks). Teams will be able to drop off their kits to a designated tent near Confro Admin, above Remax Advantage, Field 3. The kits will be available first thing in the morning the day after. Please indicate on the form attached if you are considering using this service so that we can plan with the laundry for the best way to manage pick-ups and drop offs. Live Streaming Once again QISSRL has organised for all games to be live streamed (BMD/Barton’s Field 1 will also have live commentary). A reminder to all managers to have your USB’s or portable hard drives available to hand to the camera towers at each field. You will receive these back immediately after your game. Confraternity Carnival QISSRL and Iona Dinner The QISSRL / Iona College Dinner will take place at Wynnum Manly Leagues Club on the Tuesday evening, 6:30pm for a 7:00pm start. The dinner is $85 and includes a two-course meal (entrée and main) and three hour drinks package from 6:30pm to 9:30pm. This package includes mid and heavy strength beer, red and white wine and soft drink options. The night is shaping up nicely with a special guest of the College and local Bayside Icon, ‘The King’, Wally Lewis in attendance and two special guest speakers (more on this soon!) to entertain us during the course of the evening.
