The Changing Role of Leah Hirsig in Aleister Crowley's Thelema, 1919
Aries – Journal for the Study of Western Esotericism 21 (2021) 69–93 ARIES brill.com/arie Proximal Authority The Changing Role of Leah Hirsig in Aleister Crowley’s Thelema, 1919–1930 Manon Hedenborg White Södertörn University, Stockholm, Sweden [email protected] Abstract In 1920, the Swiss-American music teacher and occultist Leah Hirsig (1883–1975) was appointed ‘Scarlet Woman’ by the British occultist Aleister Crowley (1875–1947), founder of the religion Thelema. In this role, Hirsig was Crowley’s right-hand woman during a formative period in the Thelemic movement, but her position shifted when Crowley found a new Scarlet Woman in 1924. Hirsig’s importance in Thelema gradually declined, and she distanced herself from the movement in the late 1920s. The article analyses Hirsig’s changing status in Thelema 1919–1930, proposing the term proximal authority as an auxiliary category to MaxWeber’s tripartite typology.Proximal authority is defined as authority ascribed to or enacted by a person based on their real or per- ceived relational closeness to a leader. The article briefly draws on two parallel cases so as to demonstrate the broader applicability of the term in highlighting how relational closeness to a leadership figure can entail considerable yet precarious power. Keywords Aleister Crowley – Leah Hirsig – Max Weber – proximal authority – Thelema 1 Introduction During the reign of Queen Anne of Great Britain (1665–1714), Sarah Churchill, Duchess of Marlborough (1660–1744), was the second most powerful woman in the kingdom. As the queen’s favourite, the Duchess overcame many restrictions hampering women of the time. -

Vernal Equinox Go-Live / Stream the Invocation of Horus from the Libri of Aleister Crowley – the Equinox of the Gods – Chapter 6
Vernal Equinox go-live / stream The Invocation of Horus From The Libri of Aleister Crowley – The Equinox of the Gods – Chapter 6 The Arising of THE BEAST 666. 9○=2□ It has been judged best to reprint as it stands the account of these matters originally compiled for “The Temple of Solomon the King.” (Equinox Vol. I, No. VII, pp 357-386.) (The notes for this article were worked out in collaboration with Captain (now Major-General) J.F.C. Fuller. Every means of cross-examination was pressed to the utmost.) THE PRIEST In opening this the most important section of Frater P.'s career, we may be met by the unthinking with the criticism that since it deals rather with his relation to others than with his personal attainment, it has no place in this volume. (Projected by Fuller as no more than a record of the personal attainment of Aleister Crowley.) Such criticism is indeed shallow. True, the incidents which we are about to record took place on planes material or contiguous thereto; true, so obscure is the light by which we walk that much must be left in doubt; true, we have not as yet the supreme mystical attainment to record; but on the other hand it is our view that the Seal set upon Attainment may be itself fittingly recorded in the story of that Attainment, and that no step in progress is more important than that when it is said to the aspirant: “Now that you are able to walk alone, let it be your first care to use that strength to help others!” And so this great event which we are about to describe, an event which will lead, as time will show, to the establishment of a New Heaven and New Earth for all men, wore the simplest and humblest guise. -
FROM THELEMA to SANTA MUERTE an Interview with Dr Manon Hedenborg White
FROM THELEMA TO SANTA MUERTE An Interview with Dr Manon Hedenborg White WRSP: Thelema is not a particularly well-known religion, even among scholars of new religious movements, and Aleister Crowley himself is often misunderstood and even demonised. For that reason, could you give readers a very basic introduction to what Thelema is. Dr Hedenborg White: Thelema (Greek for “will”) is the religion founded in 1904 by Aleister Crowley. Its foundational document is The Book of the Law (or Liber AL vel Legis), a text Crowley held was dictated to him by a discarnate being named Aiwass. The central maxim of Thelema is “Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law” and the related “Love is the law, love under will.” Rather than an injunction to follow each impulsive whim or desire, this refers to what Crowley described as the “true Will”—the unique purpose of each life, which it is incumbent on each individual to discover and fulfil. The Book of the Law (and Crowley’s later interpretations thereof) suggests a dialectical ontology, centring on the generative coupling of the goddess Nuit, representing limitless space, and her consort Hadit, the infinitely condensed life-force of each individual. Their ecstatic union generates Ra-Hoor-Khuit, a manifestation of the Egyptian god Horus. This is important as The Book of the Law also heralds the advent of a new age in the spiritual evolution of humanity (with Crowley as its prophet), which Crowley later identified as the Aeon of Horus, and which he believed would be characterised by radical social transformation, the union of the spiritual and material, and a focus on individual liberation. -

LIBER AL Vel LEGIS Sub Figura CCXX As Delivered by XCIII = 418 to DCLXVI
LIBER AL VEL LEGIS SUB FIGURÂ CCXX AS DELIVERED BY XCIII = 418 TO DCLXVI A∴A∴ Publication in Class A. ~ The Commentaries of AL ~ 1. Chapter I Being the core of the Equinox Vol. V no. 1 by Motta INTRODUCTION As all those interested in the A\ A\must know, the Order alternates Five Years of Speech with Five Years of Silence. The last published Number of THE EQUINOX was Vol. III, No. vi. Lay bibliophiles must not waste time seeking for Vol. IV, which was a Volume of Silence. Readers must not, under any circumstances, take this present publication of the Commentaries too seriously. The Publication is in Classes A, B and C, which means, "in whiter words": Class A: These are Utterances from above the Abyss, from Initiates of the Collegium Summum, of which must not be changed even the style of a letter. Only the original text of AL and The Comment, signed Ankh-f-n-khonsu, are in this Class here. (Exceptions, such as quotes from other Holy Books, are duly noted.) Such texts are in bold type. (The weak in intellect, the automatic rebel, and even some earnest seeker may ask: "Why must one not change even the style of a letter of such texts?" The answer is simply that even the style of a letter has meaning in them. It is not a matter of Respect for Authority. It is a matter of keeping the records straight, lest the Utterance of a Master become smeared by the Confusion of a Follower, or several Followers, a thing which, unless we mistake, has happened all too often in the past.) Class B: These are utterances of High Initiates of the A\ A\, or of people recognized as High Initiates by the A\ A\, considered of sufficient value to be published under the aegis of the Order. -

JET PROPULSION A PLAY ABOUT JOHN WHITESIDE PARSONS A THESIS IN Theatre Presented to the Faculty of the University Of Missouri-Kansas City in partial fulfillment of The requirements for the degree MASTER OF ARTS By PETER JON BAKELY B.A., Park College, 1992 Kansas City, Missouri 2013 AN ABSTRACT IN JET PROPULSION A PLAY ABOUT JOHN WHITESIDE PARSONS Peter Jon Bakely, Candidate for the Master of Arts degree University of Missouri - Kansas City, 2013 ABSTRACT Jet Propulsion, a two-act drama on the life of John Whiteside Parsons, is the candidate’s thesis, along with the essay “American Weird: Researching John Whiteside Parsons, the Occult Religion of Aleister Crowley and the Formation of the American Space Program.” The essay shows the author’s work process in the writing of the play, as well as the difficulties inherent in finding truthful information regarding Fringe religions and cult personalities and in using that information to create a compelling drama and to produce that drama as part of the Kansas City Fringe Festival. Biographical materials regarding the primary historical persons depicted in the play are included. Appendices of a previous draft of the script and biographical portraits have been included to illustrate the author’s process in creating the drama. iii APPROVAL PAGE The faculty listed below, appointed by the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences have examined a thesis titled “Jet Propulsion A Play about John Whiteside Parsons,” presented by Peter Jon Bakely, candidate for the Master of Arts degree, and certify that in their opinion it is worthy of acceptance.
