The following translation of LHomme Spirituel was made some years ago, and collated with the original, at the time, by the Very Rev. Ferdinand Coosemans, S. J. To place so useful a work within the reach of a greater number, I have reduced its size about one-fourth, by omitting the Latin text of quotations and Scripture references, avoid- ing the frequent repetitions common with the writers of Father Saint-Jure's time, and, in general, adopting a concise style in rendering into English the quaint, verbose French of the original, written in the earlier half of the seventeenth century. Should any of my readers wish to verify quotations, etc., this may be done by procuring the French work in two volumes, which is by no means rare. ESIGNING, as I do, to treat fully of the spiritual man, it will be necessary, in order to give full scope to so important and rich a I. subject, first, to consider man as man ; second, as a Christian ; and, third, as a spiritual man. The third includes the second, inasmuch as a spiritual man is only an excellent Christian; and the second includes the first, for a Christian is a perfect man, and something more. Therefore, before speak- ing of the nature and qualities of a spiritual man, we shall consider him as a man and as a Christian. "Man is a great work," cries out Solomon, with admira- tion. The celebrated inscription engraven over the temple at Delphi, "know thyself," ought not to be understood solely of the knowledge we should have of our inherent base- ness and misery, to inspire us with sentiments of modesty and humility; but also the knowledge of our greatness and " 2 WHAT IS MAN. excellence, to inspire us with noble and generous sentiments, that we may never degrade ourselves.
