These values are all in fact the intertwined within the city of Hong Kong itself, bringing HKU into the 21st century as a world leader. 1 Weather in Hong Kong Hot, humid and rainy Hong Kong’s climate is sub-tropical with distinct seasons. June to August are summer and typhoon season: hot, humid and sunny, with occasional showers and thunderstorms. The average temperature ranges from 26°C to 33°C (78.8°F to 87.8°F). Temperature can exceed 33°C and high humidity levels can make it feel even hotter. However, you are recommended to bring a light windbreaker or cardigan with you as indoor air- conditioned temperature is around 20°C. For detailed weather updates, please visit http://www.hko.gov.hk/ Arrangements During Bad Weather When Tropical Storm Warning Signal No. 8 (or a higher number) or the Black Rainstorm Warning Signal is hoisted, the following arrangements will apply: A. For classes and examinations not yet started If either of the warnings is hoisted All morning classes and examinations commencing or in force AT OR AFTER 6:00 am BEFORE 2:00 pm will be CANCELLED automatically. If either of the warnings is hoisted All afternoon classes and examinations commencing at or in force AT OR AFTER 11:00 any time FROM 2:00 pm AND BEFORE 6:00 pm will be am CANCELLED automatically. If either of the warnings is hoisted All evening classes and examinations commencing or in force AT or AFTER 3:00 pm, FROM 6:00 pm onward will be CANCELLED automatically. B. For classes and examinations already started When Tropical Storm Warning - All classes will be suspended immediately. Signal No. 8 or above is hoisted - All examinations will continue until the end of that examination session. When Black Rainstorm Warning - All classes and examinations, except those held Signal is hoisted outdoors, will continue. - For outdoor classes and examinations, the responsible staff members on the spot should suspend the activities immediately, ensure that all students are taken to a safe place, and remain there until it is safe for them to return home. When Tropical Storm Warning Signal No. 3 or Red Rainstorm Warning Signal is in force, it should be assumed that all classes and examinations would be held as scheduled unless an announcement to the contrary has been made by the University. 2 Visa Students should have received a student visa label issued by Hong Kong Immigration Department before travelling to Hong Kong. • Overseas and Taiwan students should affix the Visa Label on the passport before landing to Hong Kong. • Mainland students should bring along the “Exit-entry Permit for Travelling to and from Hong Kong and Macao” (EEP) attached with the Exit Endorsement, as well as the Visa Label to enter Hong Kong directly from the Mainland for activation of his/her student visa. • Macao students should affix the Visa Label on the "Visit Permit for Residents of Macao SAR to Hong Kong SAR" (Visit Permit) before landing to Hong Kong. A landing slip will then be issued to you (below is a sample). Your student visa is deemed as valid upon receiving the landing slip together with visa/ entry permit label. Do not lose them throughout your stay in Hong Kong. 3 Finance It is recommended to prepare the budget for other academic expenses as well as your daily living in Hong Kong. However, do not carry too much cash with you at any time. Please note that service charges may be incurred if you withdraw cash from the ATMs in Hong Kong. Mastercard and Visa are more generally accepted than American Express and Discover card. Be mindful of the foreign transaction fees charged by your card issuing banks. However, some small shops and restaurants only accept cash. Please bring with you a certain amount of cash. 4 Communications A. Telephone There is no telephone service for students in the residential halls, therefore, please bring your own mobile phone. Most of the world’s mobile telecommunications systems operate in Hong Kong, including GSM 900, PCS 1800, LTE, CDMA and WCDMA (2G, 3G and 4G) networks. Therefore, all tri- or quad-band compatible phones will work with local SIM cards. SIM cards can be easily purchased at any convenience store. B. Internet Service Free and convenient internet access is available on campus and in halls. Simply choose “Wi-Fi.HK via HKU” for internet connection on your computer or mobile devices. However, you should stay alert and be aware of your surroundings at all times, especially when you are in a crowded area. Please stay with your group during outings.
